Hip Hop would be better without cursing.

Are Hip-Hop fans the original hipsters? I feel like the rule of thumb is that the lesser know the rapper is the better he is.

no, just that this thread is flavored with snobby backpackery. true fans of the culture realize that hip hop was originally designed for parties and crowds, and therefore hold no silly hatred for hip hop as popular or party music.

i really want to like Tyler but he is rough with the bad stuff

"I'm not gay. I just want to boogie to some Marvin" always stuck with me out of Yonkers though :lol

also thanks for the recommendations :)

holla, i wouldnt call earl great though. lets just call it potential for now

yea 'great' is an overstatement i'll give you that. he's back from exile though so it'll be interesting what he'll do now. tyler's antics don't bother me, i'm just not a fan of his flow or wordplay. his live shows are pretty insane, though.

Tyler's so ridiculous that it's impossible to even take the shit he says seriously. Which is why it's never really bothered me.

his comeback song was pretty terrible, not rapping but it had this beaver getting massacred in a woodchipper production

i really would just like him to split with of and spend his talent on something else, dudes arent stepping their beat or feature game up(i guess tyler has done the latter sorta)

So I am listening to a couple of Jdilla tracks, and Busta Rhymes comes on and the first 10 seconds is screaming the word fuck. I know he's a garbage rapper, but it just ruined the mood, and ruined Jays track. I hate when rappers substitute words with curses, it's why I don't listen to any mainstream shit. /vent
C'mon son.

i like tyler if only for him getting BADBADNOTGOOD some love. i do agree though - frank in particular has already grown too big for OF.

I don't know about all that. I will say that sometimes I prefer radio edits to the original version. That might be because I got used to listening to the radio edit and the original just didn't sound right at that point.

Damn I'm 35 and it's really comforting to learn that nothing good has come out as I drifted away from hip-hop in the last decade. Tell me, whippersnappers, what are those Cannibal Ox fellows up to these days? I remember really liking them back before I had to pop Cialis to get it up.

the "that's not hip-hop, that's rap" people are the absolutely worst I swear.
the hip-hop songs are the more light hearted ones that you can hip and hop to!

the rap songs are the more aggressive ones and are usually more lyrically dense!

duh.

Calling Busta Rhymes a garbage rapper shows how little you know of the genre you want to try to fix.

No thanks, bud.

big l rapped about killing people and fucking women mostly, why is he put on a pedestal by nerds
it wasn't so much what he rapped about, it's how he rapped. he had style for days and just had sick lines. It also helped that he rapped over beats from the best producers of the time: Diamond D, Lord Finesse, Showbiz, Buckwild, DJ Premier... He was part of the DITC crew who was pretty much universally praised by underground heads back in the day, so the fame by association thing also plays into it.

If you can't listen to his "Lifestyles Ov Da Poor & Dangerous" album and realize that there is something special there, then just stop listening to hip hop please.

Oh and regarding the OP's Busta Rhymes quip: THIS LINK says fuck you. (not me though, just that link)

Poor rappers do tend to substitute cursing and N-word for other applicable lyrics. He's not wrong in saying that.

Agreed. I've felt this way for awhile. It's just lazy lyricism. A lot of times rappers seem to throw in a curse word or n***a to get an extra syllable or two because they can't seem to come up with something better to say. I remember hearing a Birdman verse where he ended several lines in a row with the n-word, and that was supposed to serve as the "rhyme". I imagine it's a lot more challenging to rap without the crutch of curse words or the n-word. That being said, I have no problem with cursing personally, it can be a great way to express aggression or add to humor. It can be annoying if it's excessive and nothing is really being said though.

I'm going to ignore the OP's Busta comment though. That's just blasphemy.

Chamillionaire is sort of known for this. He doesnt swear very much at all. Seems like when folks started drawing attention to that his record sales plummeted. lol

...Birdman is a rapper in the same way Lana Del Ray is a singer.
