Sony US and UK teams helping out on The Last Guardian

Eurogamer Article

Sony development teams in the US and UK are helping Team Ico finish up long-in-the-offing PlayStation 3 adventure The Last Guardian, Sony has confirmed.

Speaking in an interview with Wired, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida explained that Sony Santa Monica - the team behind God of War - is among the studios offering help.

"Well, you know, it's not just Santa Monica," he said.

"We have great tech people in Worldwide Studios. We have a central tech group in the US and the UK so we are giving them whatever help they need. Technically, we have the best engineers in the US and Europe, so these teams are helping them, giving advice."

Elsewhere in the interview, Yoshida reiterated that Team Ico is making slow but steady progress on the game, and "sometimes the team has to go back and review things."

"There's a vision that we want to realise but it's very very tough and technical issue that the team is tackling and some plans have to be made to evaluate and go through the process."

"At one point the progress was great, so we talked about the timing of the launch in the past. But now it's making progress, but still not to the level - it's playable, but not to the point that we can talk about the timing of launch."

Team Ico's first project since PlayStation 2 classic Shadow of the Colossus was first announced way back in May 2009, but precious little has been heard since.

Late last year, Eurogamer learned that studio head Fumito Ueda is no longer a permanent Sony employee and is finishing the game on a freelance basis.

Checked the last four pages but didn't find anything. Sorry if old.

This is from the Wired interview (was that posted? Surprised it wasn't)

I like how they told Yosh that they heard other devs are helping them and Yosh is like "Did you hear that from the Internet?"

I'm more interested in reading a book that delves into the dark dirty secrets of this game's development than actually playing the bloody thing.

What could have gone so completely wrong? Its "very very tough" after literally years in development, and this is the team that made Ico and SotC!?

Really hope EDGE does one of those famed retrospectives on the development of this game at some point after its released.

Those games took years and had their development problems too.

Development hell.

I wonder if their vision was too much for the PS3 to handle... I said it in another thread, but if that's the case...why not just put it on the PS4 as a launch title?

But shadow nearly killed ps2s but that amount of stutter wouldn't fly these days. Whatever they're doing with the lighting, feather rendering and all that jazz must be extremely taxing on the system.

I don't care much about TLG anymore, but I do wonder if that means that the US and EU team will now be able to help with FW? JP didn't let them help before.

It'll end up like DNF.

You'll be able to tell which studios made what level.

SM made the level where Toriko goes apeshit and kills everyone he ever me.

Just let Naughty Dog finish it.
They would just turn it into a shooter. And the main character would be a white guy with day old scruff.

Anyway, it sucks to hear that a project that was probably so creator-driven having to have external hands dipping into it.

That would probably mean a lot longer development and a massive money sink to cover it - easier just to send Sony's grafters over to start picking up the pieces and make something with what they've got

If anyone with the power to decide at Sony is reading this: Please just make it a PS4 launch title. I will buy a PS4 at launch in a heartbeat for this if it means the game will be better in the end. :)

It would mean 2-3 more years development time at most. The game has already been in development for something like 7 ridiculous years.

I don't think it's that much of a money sink either -- team ico is fairly small.

I'd rather they take the time and release the game as they intended rather than having to make compromises.

I'll be honest, I probably stopped feeling this game even before Ueda's departure. I'll still play it when it's out, but it's off my radar

I often wondered just how this game would work.
I mean it's a massive giant cat and tiny boy, it's not like colossus vs you or hand in hand with yorda. All this could have been is cat gets attacked you help, it lifts you up places you can't get to, you walk around with and without it. Due to its size in original trailers gameplay could be difficult, wouldn't surprise me if we see this again the guardian will have shrunk.

Team Ico is likely the largest non-Polyphony team SCEJ has. I think that's kind of ridiculous.

Christ. The game should be good with the amount of help it's getting. Would love to read a write up once it's out on what the hell was going on during development. Or maybe even a behind the scenes DVD on the CE version, a la Deus Ex: HR.

What in the world is The Last Guardian? Is Michael Bay directing it? I hope so because I share the attention span of a 6 year old child.

I honestly don't see how business concerns/impatience should ever come into play when you are interested in good experiences. That's all.

bish gets all the credit :)
Hopefully it's just tech issues and nothing major design wise. The SM and GG programmers are fucking wizards, i tell ya!

Is that really that different from any other Sony game?

I think the fact that TLG has been MIA for so long implies that these studios might have a little more than usual involvement. Youre right thoough in that its not unlike Sony first party to help eachother out

Pretty much. Ico took four years, for an early PS2 game, it's the best game I've ever played. I have no issue waiting as long as it takes, everyone knows development this generation is taking longer across the board.

I don't care if it takes ten years, if it's good when it comes out, that's all that matters. Same with Versus XIII, the idea that it's bad a XIII sequel was made and released between the releases of Versus trailers is irrelevant if the ultimate quality is there.

Given the situation, this is the best possible news we could have gotten in the near future.

Glad to hear it, maybe they'll light a fire under those guys and get things rolling. Hopefully we'll be able to hear some much more positive news in the next six to eight months.

Absolutely pathetic.

Didn't they recently send over the founder of Santa Monica studios to sort Team ICO's shit out? Hopefully he's able to salvage something.

Honestly, this was my most hyped game when I learned about it, but now I'm expecting it to be mediocre at best if/when it finally releases. It sounds like the developers had no idea what the fuck they were doing, which is depressing.

I still remain unconvinced that the last guardian exists in any kind of capacity beyond being a bullet point at TGS

I have a feeling they are going for something new, something that haven't been done before in terms of gameplay. It might be AI related or something that affects the gaming world...

Anyway i don't know if Keita Takahashi's tour in SCEJ studios was posted before but here it is just in case:

And Ueda-san came here. He is director of “The Last Guardian”. They are reading game review of Gravity Daze on Weekly famitsu. Of course I checked "The Last Guardian" as well. I wanted to say something but I will be killed by someone if I told something about it. So it’s still secret. I can't wait to finish this game because I think it will be compilation of his works so far:)

I don't get it. He says the game is like Ico meets SotC, and you see that as trying something new?
