So I am listening to a couple of Jdilla tracks, and Busta Rhymes comes on and the first 10 seconds is screaming the word fuck. I know he's a garbage rapper, but it just ruined the mood, and ruined Jays track. I hate when rappers substitute words with curses, it's why I don't listen to any mainstream shit. /vent

The fuck?

It's always been curious to me that the first Das EFX album was self-censored. There's no swearing in it as far as I can recall, even though it's implied. Maybe it's worth checking out:

I know Pharoah Monche was prone to swearing later in his career (I can't believe I'm talking about swearing in rap as if it were important...), but they were mostly absent from Organized Konfusion's works:

Clark Gable tries to act so different, but he's the one that cares about his friend's sex life.

There's a lot I disagree with you on, but then I noticed you listen to Camp Lo, so me and you are cool on that Luchini tip. That album was the OST was my mid-teens. So good.

I just wish rap wouldn't take itself so seriously. That's why I like Childish Gambino. the majority of the time that he's talking about fucking bitches or how badass he is, it's ironic.

Same goes with Die Antwoord.

Hip hop wpuld be better if people stopped rapping about swag and got back rapping about women, parties, and homeboys.

Rip hip hop: 1985-1997
Absolutely not. There is no way you can honestly say this. There are 8-10 rap albums I would suggest for "real" rap that came out just last year. Let alone the last 14.

So many classic albums in the 00's, how can one be so ignorant? I almost want to make a list..

My top 5 rappers currently are:

1. Die Antwoord (edgy ironic-rap)
2. Childish Gambino
3. Tyga
4. Lupe Fiasco
5. Gucci Mane

Lupe Fiasco is the only one who doesn't curse too often, he makes very politically-conscious music. OP you should check it out. Lasers especially. Words I Never Said gives me chills

First off, I love hip hop. Secondly, the 'profanity' in rap doesn't bother me a lick, it lends it a great deal of it's rhythmic cadence. In fact, profanity is great quite often!

And, in a lot of ways hip hop has moved away from the violence of 90s gangsta rap, so that's cool. When Birdman says 'SHOOT UP ANYTHANG BUT A SCHOOL OR A PLAYGROUND' it's more eye-rolling than anything. It is Birdman, after all.

HOWEVER. It can sometimes be tough to a hip-hop fan and a feminist. To be clear, I have no intention of expressing frustration with rap's hyper-sexuality, which is in the same place as the profanity for me. Part of the Id, totally cool with it. But there's some stuff that goes beyond that. When Pusha T says 'I never met a bitch who didn't need a little guidance' in an otherwise-great verse in Kanye's 'So Appalled', or when Kendrick Lamar, otherwise my favorite new rapper, says 'I call a bitch a bitch, a ho a ho, a woman a woman' I can't write that shit off.

I love hip hip for its urgency and immediacy, but from that comes a community that reveals some seriously medieval views sometimes. It's a catch-22: The same elements of hip-hip that prevent that community from self-censoring this kind of thing are the same elements that give it that powerful immediacy.

Tyler's so ridiculous that it's impossible to even take the shit he says seriously. Which is why it's never really bothered me.

I assumed Tyler says the shit he does for the lulz. The way he acts makes it seems like he doesn't take anything seriously.

His line about Chris Brown in Martians vs. Goblins makes me LULZ, though.

I will say actually, extreme gangster rap does affect your thinking a little. I don't mean it makes you go out and shoot somebody or anything, but I remember listening to 'Onyx' a lot as a kid, and it strangely made feel quite aggressive and angry while listening to it. You kind of go into that mentality. I don't know if that makes sense to anybody.

Music seems to connect to you on a completely different level that evokes various emotions and feelings while listening to it. Like some songs can be quite soothing for example.

Shut 'em Down is a classic album, but fuck me is it hardcore. :/

For example.

I think this is favourite song on that album.

Eh, only when it's on the radio and they edit the shit out of it until you can't get into the flow of the music anymore. I can kind of appreciate that Hip-hop really IS too crass for some and maybe even myself, but with indie loosing all of it's teeth and metal becoming a boring self parody, it's nice that there is SOMETHING out there that keeps people somewhat on their toes.

I like to think of hip hop as a type of punk music. At it's best, it's scary music by kids with no talent, little hope and some shit they are pissed about that needs to be said. At it's worst, its posturing nonsense to sell kids at the mall so that they feel edgy until they get old enough that they just listen to it "for the beat" and die of liver failure.

Since when was Busta a garbage rapper?!

2003 maybe?

EDIT: Also, anyone who says music can't make kids violent or whatever hate art. That's the whole goddamn point of music, to make you feel something. If people process it wrong, you shouldn't punish art...

Is it inappropriate in a karaoke setting to sing uncensored hip-hop as a white Caucasian? If so, why? And do you tip the karaoke dj?

It's the misogyny, anti-gay bullshit, and narrow minded glamorization of excess wealth that I can't tolerate anymore.

I don't give a fuck about cursing.

Rap is a pretty diverse genre dude. Go listen to some Tribe Called Quest.

Yeah, I just don't identify with much of it. I love it as an art form, but it rarely speaks to me.

Lol, that's the thing. He's still doing that.
You check in on the guy and he's rapping really fast with a lot of one syllable words and hard consonants about complete fucking nonsense. He barely plays with the rhythm or switches things up. It's a sprint of babel. Not impressed anymore. Might as well listen to a guy shred guitar or some diva sing a bunch of complicated runs. Doesn't make me feel shit. Doesn't compel me.

At least as a kid he felt novel and outlandish... but I can appreciate that some people are still into that. I just can't bring myself to call someone a "good rapper" just because he can technically rap quite well and have been successfully mining the same vein since before I had hair on my balls.

...but no snark. I really can see why some people would like it. I just don't think it makes it a clear case of, "lol, wut OP? He is clearly gud!"

I think it is more than that actually. I've found hip-hop can be an incredibly powerful way to express yourself. Again it goes back to the idea that music connects to you on a different level. Although, suffering and the understanding of what is to suffer gives you quite a deep and profound view of the human condition. Something that evokes a feeling of there being something greater that transcends money and material possessions.

I've always found this song quite beautiful.

Fuck no. It seems as if all you've heard of hip hop is from the radio for the past couple years. Hip hop probably is one of the best forms of art to express yourself, with its diverse ways of melding lyrical style (which is practically infinite in the genre) with fantastic beats that convey a variety of emotions.

What music do you like? Let me pick out the shit for you.

Re-read what I wrote. I was complimenting Hip-Hop. I don't value talent. I value art.
At it's best, Hip-hop is a way for people with very little traditional "talent" to subvert popular culture and say something they need to say.
At it's worst, it's posturing bullshit.
There is obviously shades of gray between what I deem hip-hop at it's best and at it's worst in my view.
You are basically repeating what I said without my opinions and qualifiers attached to it.

Food and Liquor is my favorite album of it's respective decade along side maybe Kid A without checking release dates.

If someone plays a very difficult piece of music that only one person on earth can play, I maye very well hate it. I will probably prefer a simpler and more direct peice of music that speaks to my soul.
I don't value talent.
I value art. I value things that make me fucking feel something.
It's not confusing, it's just a word people have attached to much meaning to in order condescend to others. If we gave a fuck about talent with any intellectual honesty, I assume this thread would be about Jazz music.

Fuck talent. I like what I like. Justifying it is for old people.

Arguments like this is part of why "conscious" hip-hop can be so fucking boring sometimes. Thats why I love Lupe, he doesn't forget the hooks, but his flows and lyrics have some meat I can digest over several listens without being well... unfun.
