Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

I actually think Microsoft is more concerned with trying to drive Sony out of the console market than competing with Nintendo. If MS does go with a tablet controller like Nintendo that would put immense pressure on Sony to follow suit which might further hurt their Vita business, or it might pressure them to re-emphasize the connectivity, but even then I'm not sure for all the connectivity Vita may have with the PS4 that it would have the same degree of functionality of the Wii U tablet.

If this scenario played out at all it would be much harder for Sony to attract third party developers even for ports because with 2/3 of the consoles going tablet controller that means developers would tailor their games more around the controller rather than tacking it on as some currently fear with the Wii U.
my theory is similar. To be honest, I don't think MS is as interested in gaming as people think. I think they want to push Sony out, for sure, but I think they're overall goal is to slowly slip away from "core" gaming and into full on entertainment centre with casual gaming experiences here and there. What I'm saying is I think MS is using gaming to get into a different broader market, meanwhile a company like Nintendo is in it for the gaming, but will do broad things as well, as a side thing and not their real focus.

What would be the reasons for showing it behind closed doors?
Because GDC is primarily a developers conference and doesn't have the big marketing/PR backing that E3 does. E3 planning has already begun no doubt, so they're focusing on that for all the public/press reveals while at GDC is mainly for talking with devs.

I don't think we have data points to know how probable that is yet. It's certainly possible in the long term but that's probably too far down the road to predict.

Sony though... is such a wild card. The more I think about it the more I think have a new Dual Shock as the default design without massive changes (such as a tablet screen) would be a huge mistake. I know Sony is into the high end tech scene but they've been so regressive on controller design and unwilling to take chances and commit to new designs. I think all of the consoles, regardless of power will be close enough any differences there won't matter. Next gen I predict will be decided on exclusive games and innovative and interesting controls.

There's a rumor going around that Crytek will be showing a CryEngine Wii U demo behind closed doors at GDC.

We'll probably not find out either way if it actually happened, but I would go ahead and label this as pretty damn credible.

Well, I guess it wasn't too far off :p

Their relationship with Crytek is rather interesting though, considering they hired that one guy who used to work there as well.

Thinking about the Crytek thing. I'd sooner see the next Gears of War on WiiU. It would be epic.

I agree with all of that. In the end I think what you said initially will happen. MS will release a tablet like controller, then Sony will be forced to do the same, and then they'll be fucked because they'll be the last to join the party, plus the vita confusion assuming the vita is still selling for that steep price by then.

Interesting times ahead though.

Wii U-3DS-Vita-PC for me going forward. Anything further depends on whether or not more Japanese games flourish on the other consoles or one offs like the Capcom fighters, Platinum Games' output, or some really break out game happens on the other systems.

I'm want to take this stance sans the PC but that depends on the WiiU third party situation

There have been numerous discussions about Nintendo's activities at GDC this year. Some people have suggested due to no keynote delivered by any Nintendo executive this year that this event is not beneficial for Nintendo to release new Wii U information at. However, previous events featuring no keynote by Nintendo have proven to also bring reports about upcoming products and more. As so, here's a small list of what regarding Nintendo's products has been unfolded at GDC since 2006, in descending order:

Game Developers Conference 2011

Keynote by Nintendo: Yes
http://media.nintendo.com/gdc2011/_ui/flv/gdc2011.mp4

While Mr. Iwata mostly detailed many interesting industry trends and shared a few anecdotes, some notable news were made here:

  • Teasing Super Mario 3D Land
  • Firm details about the Nintendo eShop
  • Brief details about StreetPass and SpotPass
  • Announcement of Netflix on 3DS
  • Kensuke Tanabe, Michael Kelbaugh and more discussed Donkey Kong Country Returns in a panel presentation
  • Hideki Konno hosted a session and talked about his involvement in the development of 3DS' hardware
Game Developers Conference 2010

Keynote by Nintendo: No

As Nintendo hosted it's own media summit in February and there revealed more information on key titles including Dragon Quest IX, FlingSmash, Metroid: Other M and more, GDC this year wasn't made out to be anything of a shocker. Rumors about the Nintendo 3DS Nintendo mentioned in a press release on the 23rd of March 2010 surrounded the event though, but little surfaced.

  • Metroid: Other M and WarioWare: DIY were demonstrated
  • Both Reggie Fils-Aime and Cammie Dunaway gave interviews on a large number of issues, mostly on what Nintendo think's about Kinect and Move, and what could be expected at E3
  • Yoshio Sakamoto hosted a session about his development philosphies and his relation to Metroid
Game Developers Conference 2009

Keynote by Nintendo: Yes
http://press.nintendo.com/object?id=17835

This particular keynote concerned Nintendo's interal design process and how they work in small teams and make sure it's all about the fun. The audience had expected quite many announcements for some reason, but only got The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord. Other news surfaced during GDC though:

  • Footage of Wario Ware Snapped
  • Masato Kuwahara revealed some scrapped prototypes of Nintendo consoles in the session "The Inspiration Behind Nintendo DSi Development"
  • DSiWare US launch details
  • Wii's 4.0 System Update footage
  • Punch-Out!! footage
  • The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks footage
  • Virtual Console Arcade announcement
Game Developers Conference 2008

Keynote by Nintendo: No

No keynote by Nintendo this year, but they still had a really nice show going on there. Nintendo hosted three sessions by Takao Sawano, Takashi Aoyama, and Masahiro Sakurai respectively.

  • Wii Fit and WiiWare Dates Announced
  • Interview with Reggie Fils-Aime on Wii Fit
  • LostWinds Screens
  • Smash Bros. Brawl Screenshots
  • Wii Fit Screens
  • Mario Kart Screens
  • Final Fantasy WiiWare Screens
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King
  • Pay to Play details
  • Takao Sawano hosted a session about the development of WiiFit
  • Takashi Aoyama hosted a session about Wii's internal hardware programming
  • Masahiro Sakurai talked about character development in Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Game Developers Conference 2007

Keynote by Nintendo: Yes
http://press.nintendo.com/object?id=11690

Shigeru Miyamoto had a keynote session here, and I believe it kicked ass. It was a very personal and relaxed speech and very mesmerizing. While few revelations about new games were given, much other interesting information was given by Nintendo:

  • Aonuma reflected on The Legend of Zelda series and his own involvement
  • Koji Kondo hosted a session called "Painting an Interactive Musical Landscape", where he demonstrated his work in several ways
  • The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass footage/demonstrations
  • Super Paper Mario footage/demonstrations
  • Mario Strikers Charged Hands footage/demonstrations
Game Developers Conference 2006

Keynote by Nintendo: Yes
http://press.nintendo.com/object?id=9056

Mr. Iwata here talked about disruptive development and discussed Nintendo's ambition to change the marked into something more approachable by casual gamers and those who haven't played before. It's a very nice speech, with some nice jokes thrown in as well, I can quote this:

I have been asked many times how we decided to develop these games... so I
thought maybe this is the first story I should share with you today.

Where did this idea come from? I'm sure you can guess... it started where all
great creative ideas begin... from a board of directors!
You can read it in its entirety here: http://press.nintendo.com/object?id=9058
Not much was revealed here other than what Iwata presented, which most importantly was The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Though his speech acted as a great way to hype E3 2006, where the grand reveal of Wii took place.

Sources: Nintendo, Gamasutra, IGN

Even without a keynote, Nintendo has evidently presented a wide load of information, and I doubt GDC this year will be any different. While only two speakers are announced (Steve Rabin and Koichi Hayashida), they've got two booths ready (one big and one small) placed in strategically good positions for business to be made efficiently, as Instro showed with the floorplan image. And with little information released about Wii U since E3 2011, not counting what they had at CES 2012, Nintendo's surely hard-pressed to spill some beans.

This recent Crytek rumor about them showing a CryEngine (3?) game for Wii U at GDC only strengthens the presentiment of next generation galore. Don't count your Reggies before they hatch, though.

Europe!

(Not getting any more specific than that, so you guys can feel free to believe this or not.)
I didn't even realize it but wsippel says the same thing in a different thread:

Not really all that surprising, is it? It's a new platform, Crytek and Epic confirmed support, and GDC is the opportunity to show your middleware to potential licensees. And I hear Crytek UK recently readied a Wii U demo they're quite eager to show.

unless that was your source lol. Or he is using you as a source.

It wasn't, but

There's another former GAF poster who does know his stuff about European gaming industry goings-on and I wasn't sure about posting the rumor until he mentioned it, as well.

That's all the hints I can give on this one. I think the rumor is more credible than not.

well that's good, and yeah it doesn't even sound hard to believe. Hopefully someone who sees it spills something rather than us seeing it 3 months later.

As credible as the last one, perhaps a bit less???

Or 2 to 5 times as credible???

Agreed. I was saying back in the old "NextBox in 2012!" threads that the idea of there being a PS360 "alliance" against the Wii was more in the minds of fans, and that Sony and Microsoft probably didn't like their hardware being seen as so interchangeable with their competition.

Nintendo does things so differently than Microsoft that I'm pretty sure that if Microsoft saw an opportunity to align their next console with what Nintendo's doing and snuff Sony out of the market, they'd probably take it without hesitation. Sony's in no position to be the odd man out next gen.

The only problem I see with Microsoft shipping NextBox with a tablet controller is Kinect. We know that Kinect 2 is coming, and it's most likely going to be bundled with the console. That plus a tablet controller would be pretty pricey...

I'm going to throw out an off-the-wall prediction: Nintendo will be licensing CryEngine as the official engine for all of their big next-gen titles.

CryEngine is a very capable engine, and having a next-gen-ready engine right from the start will help Nintendo avoid a lot of the pitfalls that plagued Japanese development all this gen. It would also explain why they would hire someone from Crytek to be a software consultant when they're already working closely with the company. I'll bet anything that this guy's primary job is to bring Nintendo's teams up to speed on how to fully utilize CryEngine.

This also benefits Crytek. Despite CryEngine being pretty feature-rich (from what I've heard, anyway), it still hasn't been adopted by other devs on the same level as, say, Epic's Unreal Engine. Aligning themselves with a gaming powerhouse like Nintendo will go a long way to advertising their middleware.

It's win-win. :)

Nope, they'll just create a new NintendoWare. Nintendo has a lot of very experienced tech guys and nearly unlimited ressources.
