Are we ever going to see another Advance Wars?

On one hand, I think it would be unfathomable to never see another Advance Wars. Nintendo is smarter than that.

On the other hand, I've been playing Wipeout Vita all day today thinking "God I'd love F-Zero 3DS".

I really thought that the challenge maps were on the main campaign maps as optional/unlockable locations, and thus had ratings like the normal maps.

You didn't get the last few = the last few maps were hard? Or you mean you just didn't play them enough to get the highest rating?

last few maps were hard and wasn't in the mood to try and get an S ranking. Never tried to finish the extra 3 and 4 player missions. Those just confuse the heck out of me and go for way too long.

I'm more of a Fire Emblem guy. I like seeing my characters grow and tear through everything, and I feel like FE is a lot easier. I have a tough time with Advance Wars. I tried the first GBA one and couldn't do it. DoR is great, though. I like the setting and the soundtrack and the difficulty though at times it's still too much.

I'd mentioned the war room thing earlier, and I'm curious about it especially since I've been designing a 2D game inspired by Advance Wars with the pipe dream goal of selling it on Steam:

What do you like about the war room more than all the versus maps you can play against the AI in Days of Ruin? If I recall correctly, there may actually be more versus maps to choose from than the old war room maps, and it highlights the icon if you play through one and win a game with it. I guess the difference is that the war room maps gave you preset scenarios and gave you a rating on your performance.

Is the preset scenario and the rating what you miss?
Well there weren't many challenge maps in DoR, and they also restricted you to specific COs when you tried them. Being able to use any CO you want to tackle a WR was neat and I was sad to see that I couldn't choose my CO for the DoR challenge maps. Also, someone went and got 300 on all the WR maps with Grimm and no forces. That was pretty cool.

I'm also sure there were many many more WR maps in AW2 and AWDS though, and there was variations in enemy lineups (I don't remember if any of the DoR challenge maps ever made you fight more than two AIs on a team, but I'm sure 1v2 AI and 1v3 AI was in AWDS).

I'm pretty sure they are probably developing an Advance Wars for 3DS, would be foolish if they weren't. How popular are those games in the west? I know Days of Ruin was canceled for release in Japan.

I kind of wish they called it 3DS Wars or something, though, considering we're not playing on the GBA anymore and haven't been for 8 years or so. Plus it'd be consistent with the series' original naming (Famicom Wars, Super Famicom Wars, Game Boy Wars, or Advance Wars's original name, Game Boy Wars Advance)...

Yes... YES! We need an Advance Wars for 3DS.

Game should remain 2D for the strategic map and 3D for the battles :)

Make it happen Nintendo... I want to hear news from you in about... 5 months (?)

Aren't the challenge map CO less? Was a pretty underwhelming for me because you can't even use CO's for most of the campaign.

It was overall not as difficult as some of the prior entries, but it certainly wasn't piss easy. Moreover, there is more to determining how enjoyable a game is then simply looking at how difficult it is. I found the maps and mechanics to be much more fun than in earlier games.
Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I do agree the refined mechanics were a strong point of DoR. Revamping the entire system of how the game probably took up most of IS's time so I'm eagerly awaiting the next game and hoping it'll be better in the difficulty department.

Yeah, I do recall that maybe the first few were no CO, mainly because they hadn't introduced the concept of COs yet. One of the later challenge maps does assign Tasha to you on a map with Ports and no Airports. I thought that was amusing.

I think the reason why they took so long to show COs was to try and drill in any expertise for normal unit handling, before having the player dabble in any kind of specialization. The COs in DoR do have more leeway in strategies/unit combinations they can pursue (unlike say, Max or Grit), so it might be important to do well with the basics first.

Shocked at all the Days of Ruin love in here - after putting in over a hundred hours into DS, I didn't even complete the campaign on DR. But to each his own. Anyway, when Nintendo drops a new Advance Wars is probably what will put me over the edge on picking up the 3DS.

yep yep yep, that's why a hard mode campaign was so missed.

I still love it, but it's behind BHR because of these omissions.

played AW1 ohhhh ten years ago and couldn't put it down <3 Wonderful little game
Picked up #2 many years after the fact, shoved it in a drawer and forgot about it (never even loaded it up). I remember being disenchanted that reviews said it was "more of the same, plus a couple of new units."

Then all was quiet for a long while. Recently got a 3DS so I picked up the two DS titles for a song, and started working my way through AWDS. We'll see how it goes :)

I have to admit I only ended up picking it up because I heard the US localisation was a lot better than the terrible EU version I played which had none of the magic of the AWars series.

Days of Ruin's music, character design and gameplay mechanic was top notch. I was surprised it wasn't released in Japan. Didn't it sell pretty well?

Getting the urge to replay it. And Nintendo, please make a new one...

Absolutely terrible

Why the hell people want 3d in such a weak 3d machine like the 3ds? in 5 years it would look horrible but if it will be in 2d it would be wonderful for ages, hell even Famicom Wars looks good nowadays.

In my case, I loved the gameplay to the Advance Wars games, but I couldn't stand the tone. The first game was the worst, where characters treated their soldiers like Pokemon, throwing armies to battle each other to the death on a whim, and I really dislike the idea of having children leading armies that is so prevalent in anime in general anyway. I loved the first three Advance Wars games in spite of this, and the second and third games were better about the tone, and significantly darker in general, but these are games where hundreds, if not thousands of soldiers die. It's not a problem to have silly, funny soldiers if you don't have a story, like Famicom and Super Famicom Wars, which are basically the War Room, but if you make characters and a plot, it just doesn't work because you have stepped away from one layer of abstraction already.

The games require slow, thoughtful gameplay as you progress to the more advanced levels, so an upbeat, fast paced, zany plot wouldn't really seem all that appropriate to me anyway.

That said, as much as I loved the massive volume of content in Dual Strike, and even enjoyed the action game, the CO power Tag-teaming reached an utterly ridiculous level and utterly wiped away most of the strategy beyond feeding CO powers. The intricate system of checks and balances between units couldn't stand up to things like Colin's (admittedly fun) level 2 power. The powers gained through experience made it even worse.

If days of ruin had had the War Room and some of the other bonus content, it would have been perfect, as, sadly, there just wasn't as much game to love, and the other Advance Wars games basically had Famicom Wars (and I believe also Super Famicom Wars) included almost in their entirety, aside from unit tweaks and the CO's and leveling from the Super Famicom game. I loved the story, character design, and mood, but I especially loved the renewed focus on units and the new strategic choices offered by the toned down, but still very useful, COs. The addition of the anti-tank and the motorized infantry, along with new features and massive tweaks to old units, made the gameplay fresh and provided tons of unique, interesting options. I adore Days of Ruin, and I really would love to see something else like it again.

Forces were hilarious :)

Set up a Kanbei and Sonja team, give Sonja support forces and put the direct and indirect defense forces on Kanbei. Units with 138/150 stats and +15% luck damage? For +20% cost? I like the sound of that.

Tons of memories with these games - I used to hang out around AWBunker and Wars Central back in the day. It's a shame its 10th anniversary passed virtually unnoticed, I was still sort of hoping for a new entry.

I'm a huge AWDS fan. The single most important reason to own a DS IMO. Tbh, my DS may aswell have been a AWDS player with it built in and no cartridge slot.
I generally don't like hand held gaming, but I will buy a 3DS for a new AW game.

Have all the games but 2 (heard it wasn't enough of a change, so I ended up skipping it, but I'll definitely grab it if it ever ends up as a 3DS VC game). I liked them all, but DS's broken, insane goodness was probably my favorite.

Man I remember that final battle in the original Advance Wars, that was HARD.AS.HELL. Felt so good to prevail after a grueling 8 hour battle, and then being treated to this wonderful ending theme.

Do you mean the campaign took 8 hours? If the last battle took you 8 hours, you're doing something wrong. It shouldn't take anywhere close to 8 hours to finish the last battle.

Advance Wars on 3DS would be a day one purchase for me. I would've bought a Wii if there was an AW, and I'll buy a Wii2 or whatever its called if there is an AW for it.

I played all of them including FE. AW2 is one of my favorite games ever. It has its own charm, and its story is a little darker than first one.

I liked Day of Ruin, but the battle animations turned me off.

Days of Ruin and then the original Advance Wars. Best damn games ever (AW2 gets a nod, DS sucked balls. Bullshit CO powers).

I hope they make another one, honestly. Historically speaking, the series has been around since the 80s as Famicom Wars so all things considered, we should be getting another one...

But it'll probably be a few years though. :(

.

hehehe...yeah actually, it was an 8 hour battle. I really took my sweet time building up my forces and planning out each move tons of steps in advance...shit was intense! I probably didn't need to go so insane, but I failed the mission a few times and felt I needed to take it to the next level, so I really buckled down and went batshit insane with the strategizing.

I'm sure most of those 8 hours were spent just staring at the map and agonizing over which moves to make next.

Am I the only one that enjoyed AWDS because it was broken?

I like the whole series in general, but admittedly I only beat the first two games.

I love the FE games dearly, but most of them have an inverse difficulty curve. There's a point in that game that your units become ridiculous. They dodge everything and every hit is a critical.

Though I think that AW is mislabeled as a strategy game; it really is a puzzle game, at least in single player. Most AI maps boil down to you finding the single best solution (or one that's very close to the optimal one).

Advance Wars is the only thing that would make me buy a 3DS. Quite possibly my favorite series of games ever.

The cheery art in this game makes world war 3 seem like a fun time. You're fighting in cities presumably filled with innocent people, but it's not so sad because there's a happy young dude with wrenches in his hands leading the way. You gotta love the Japanese.

Wow, this brings memories back. I miss the days when Max was actually super powerful, and I liked the old cheerful music.

However, I think this may be my favorite "OK, YOU'RE DEAD NOW" CO power music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsDdS_8ZJzw&fmt=18

I played the hell out of Advance Wars on GBA, played a bit of Advance Wars 2, played a shitload of Dual Strike (I loved it) and I returned Days of Ruin after...four missions? Didn't like that one at all. I also hated the Battalion Wars series.

I get nostalgic when I hear these <3

~ Andy's Theme DS

~ Tag Power

The Tag Powers marked a bit of a special moment for me and my DS when I first used them, too. I remember I was staring at little sprites on a single screen, when suddenly both screens lit up in a massive blaze of light and huge art and this song kicked in...I was officially blown away by my console for the first time.

Please bring back Advance Wars Nintendo! I love the characters and music in 1-3 and really want them to star in another game!

i am not selling (yet) my 3DS because i HOPE that Nintendo releases a new Advance Wars within a year or so, it is , with MKart, my favourite IP from them.
Meanwhile i'll stick to replaying Ds' ones and maybe see if Field Commander is on PSN to play on my Vita, it plays the same, but it lacks soul.

btw, anyone knows about similar games on android/ios ?

All of the Power-up/Tag themes pump you up like no other, but Dual Strike's holds a special place in my heart for some reason.. it's just so good.

Great Little War Game might be the closest thing on iPhone. There's a few others that I can't recall the names of. None of them were anywhere near as good as AW though, imo.

edit: I think the other ones on ios were Mecho Wars and UniWar

I'd be up for another AW if they change some stuff up mechanics wise. A few new units (and presumably a lot of balancing, I'm no expert on those things) aside, I realised that I was worn out on moving mostly identical units in similar scenarios when I tried to replay DoR last summer.

If IS can't change these things without destroying the series' feeling I'd prefer a totally new strategy series from them to complement FE and AW.
