I admit, this thread is an excuse to remember everyone of how AMAZING House of the Dead OVERKILL's soundtrack is.
I mean, who would expect that a non numbered House of the Dead game from a British studio would come out with amazing tunes like these:

THOTD Overkill: Beautiful Mind

THOD Overkill: One Night In Bayou

THOTD Overkill: Torn Out Twisted

THOTD Overkill: Get Funky

THOTD Overkill: Papa Caesar

THOTD Overkill: Zombie Shuffle

I loved this game and Headstrong is known for making solid stuff, but the soundtrack really came out of nowhere for me.
I love it when lower profile games surprise me with their OSTs like this.

And yes, Nier. Any other examples?

EDIT:

Also, the Bit Trip games.
I dont have these games (yet), but i have been listening to their OSTs for some time now. Awesome stuff

For me : Heavy Rain. Nothing particularly memorable but it was well done, got you in the mood very well.

I've mentioned it a bunch, but the Dustforce soundtrack really surprised me. I'd post examples but I'm not at my PC, so hopefully someone else that agrees can do so.

Definitely Sigma Harmonics on the DS.

It's a title made by SE and never made it out of Japan featuring music by Masashi Hamauzu himself. (I do consider the DS still relevant) It's definitely one of the more unknown soundtracks out there due to not only it's lack of localization, but also because it was a very niche game (that I enjoyed a ton!) that didn't push many units.

Mutant Mudds has a really great soundtrack. And a few Mighty Switch Tracks are awesome, if you like electronic music that is.

Super Mario Galaxy is my favourite OST this generation. It is the "Ode to joy" of video games.

The World Ends With You and Mega Man 9 come close though.

Just saw the "unexpectedly" in there. Well, I would say TWEWY wins then, since you would expect great music from SM and RM. But I have to say that SMG really surprised me in a positive way. There weren't any bad tracks there. Every single one was perfect for each stage.

Deadly Premonition was my first thought, but glad GAF had my back.

Mass Effect is at the top of my list as well. If you had told me they were going to pull off such a faithful tribute to the likes of Vangelis and retro science fiction, I would have laughed. The soundtrack is incredible, though, and just so full of revereance for its inspirations.

Alan Wake (PC version is recent). I got the game yesterday and I'm blown away by the quality of the music, one of the best soundtracks ever.

Don't really like most game music and hearing Still Alive in every trailer was pretty annoying, but the actual score by Solar Fields was fantastic and fit the game's world superbly.

Some good mentions thus far. Thought I should add my recent find in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers.

Lots of genres are represented here, which is quite amazing really.

I was gonna post that, but it wasn't unexpected at all :p Final Fantasy always has amazing soundtracks and the other Crystal Chronicles games weren't exception. Crystal Bearers is one of my favorite OSTs of this gen, love it.

I don't know what is expected or unexpected, but I thought Halo 3: ODST had an incredible soundtrack. It's the only game soundtrack I regularly listen to.

Sonic Rush. Naganuma can do no wrong. I don't understand how Sega can put out Jet Set Radio then not give every soundtrack to this guy.
