Just because you don't have a panty shot every five minutes it doesn't mean Lagrange isn't full of fanservice. Muginami's sole existence is fanservice.

Wait a minute, are we recycling discussions from the anime thread?

I think if it were a "fanservice heavy" show, then every episode would be more like the ones I mentioned. I didn't say it doesn't have fanservice, I just don't consider it particularly heavy by comparison to other shows where it is far more constant and blatant. If there are more episodes like the 1st and 7th then my opinion will obviously change.

BOO THIS MAN!

I thought the title seemed interesting and once I saw the GIFs and read the OP I was greatly disappointed.

Once again nothing will save anime from it's downward spiral.

If you're looking for something like Eva, you should be watching Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Wrong. Anime fans have bad taste in all directions.

Their bad taste usually trends the other way though. They'll take some POS moe blob show-of-the-season and turn it into the highest rated thing on these rating sites.

4.85 is bad hentai territory. Stuff so poorly animated and scripted that no one could possibly jerk off to it.

It's a fun show, nothing more nothing less, and probably one of the better mecha shows in years for what it's worth!

The site in question just doesn't like moe shows when they are actually high-quality!

Oh wow, it's pulling a 4.8/10 on one community review site. Does Viz even have the money to influence an editorial in the NYT? If not, is this guy just out of his mind?

Not to say that review scores are the be-all-end-all or anything, but if the community generally shits on it (the scale usually goes 7-10, just like with video games, because of score bloat) it doesn't bode well.
What site is this?

I have no idea. People like rapidly flashing Japanese text that they can't actually read?

Edit: Apparently there is a Michael Hale that has voiced a couple anime characters. The plot thickens.

You're clearly not up to date on the current show!

Nisemono? Nope, haven't gotten around to watching it yet. Do they ditch that aspect of Bakemonogatari?

They did actually; there are still occasional flashes of text and "black scene", but it's vastly reduced from Bake.

Thank God. I had to pause Bakemono every two seconds because my quasi-OCD wouldn't allow me to not read whatever flashing text was appearing.

I believe he is talking about the anidb "weighted" average, which I' don't really understand since it just seems to vary wildly from show to show. The actual rating is a 7. Is this something new?

Instead of words now you get to look at even more explicit fanservice scenes. Portions of the show are like 1 step away from hentai.

A 7 seems just about right, actually.

My understanding is that the "weighted" averages are averages taken over time. Basically it weeds out the people that watch one episode of a show, declare it their favorite show ever, and then give the show a 10 rating. I could be wrong, because I have no affiliation with the site.

Looking at a couple of other current season reviews, it may be a bit borked. Some of them seem a bit low. I don't know how they are coming up with those numbers (maybe taking away new account reviews?). They may have changed their algorithm since I last visited (I've been visiting the site for many years at this point).

Onto the "must watch" pile it goes.

They specifically say that the heuristic used to weight the ratings is a secret. To me it looks like the AniDB ratings should be trusted even less than your average user rankings.

Without knowing what method they're using, it's hard to say. I can understand them wanting to keep ballot stuffers out though, because it always used to be a problem. If that's all they are doing (getting rid of 10's from someone that always vote's a 10, getting rid of 10's cast by brand new accounts, etc) then I think it's the right thing to do.

Leave it up to a straight average and all the fans vote 10, the show goes to #1 all time (over Miyazaki, Kon, Matsumoto, etc) and their rankings become somewhat of a joke.

Wow... she's really working that pole.

Ballot stuffing shouldn't even be an issue with a proper voting system.

Really, instead of getting recommendations from a random number on some fan website, you should find individual people whose tastes you can trust.

I find things to watch by process of elimination. If I haven't seen it, I'll probably watch it at this point. I understand the sentiment though. I was lucky; I had an IRC chatroom with hundreds of people to tell me what I should be watching (when I was much younger). I didn't have to go at it blind, or based on ratings.

So why are Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari so popular?
Service fans.

Honestly, I would be so happy if there were a movie-lengthed abridged version, with 95% less text, of Bakemonogatari.

I haven't seen Nisemonogatari or is that just a manga?

In any case, while the plot or characters are nothing to write home about at the moment it is the most visually pleasing and probably the most well directed show of this season. It also has a quality soundtrack. Its basically an average mecha show that happens to have a good sized budget behind it.

Leave it up to a straight average and all the fans vote 10, the show goes to #1 all time (over Miyazaki, Kon, Matsumoto, etc) and their rankings become somewhat of a joke.

Well, there being a weighted score doesn't seem to have fixed that problem at all considering what the top anime on anidb are.

They've definitely changed it. This must be really recent because I don't remember such scores being so low before on average even for the worse shows of the season.

That's what I was talking about. Usually, all the new shows from a season would gather a hardcore following, and go right to the top of the rankings. I think it was that way last season, but it's hard to put a timeline on it.

If you sort by rating, and get rid of synonyms, there are very few 2012 shows in the top 20. In previous years, all the new shows would be up near the top. It seems to be working (for keeping new shows out of the top specifically) but I'm sure it could use some tweaking.

I was judging the show based on the old scale. A 4 really would have been dire on it, but on the new scale, I have no idea. My criticism of the show based on it's score is rescinded.

Lol, no... just no.

The plot, that ended up faliing to shit anyway, wasn't the only draw of evangelion. Its astounding production values are a huge reasn it enjoys its popularity to this day. Also the uninspired robot and enemy robot designs can't hold a candle to the eva and angels. The ways in which they had to dispose of each angel is also a far cry from the crappy, brainless, fight scenes la grange has thrown at us so far. La grange is just another take on the kid with robot anime cliche with crap loads of fanservice. There's nothing notewrothy about it... thus far.

Wait...What?!

The fundamental metaphor is unchanged: the teenager succeeds as a robot pilot – that is, grows up – when anger or fear or libido becomes uncontrollable and the heroine-hero bursts through the limits put in place by controlling or concerned adults.

Wouldn't this make most mech shows Evangelion-esque?

If you’re turned off by the silliness, confusing back stories and adolescent sexuality of Japanese cartoons, “Lagrange” won’t change your mind.

This seems more than enough reason to not watch it. Though I disagree with the term "adolescent sexuality", if anything adolescent sexualization would be more appropriate.
