Halo |OT| HaloGAF Evolved

They're using the Reach engine as a base and modifying it, that has already been established, Frankie verified quite a while ago. That doesn't mean Halo 4 will have Reach's exact gameplay, it simply means they have the code for Reach and can use it as the starting point.

Yeah but without any information that could mean anything, in programming especially, for all we know they could be keeping just the fundamental core procedures and changing everything else. It really depends on how much of it they are using.

I guess no one will truly know until the first gameplay reveal.

New Halo 4 feature: You can give GGs at the post game screen and it will show you how many GGs you received for that helpful game.

Dani would systematically go through and thank every single match anyone ever played.

Well you really wouldn't know afterwards, it would be 90% guesswork.

There are two things I feel confident about with Halo 4 :
The Engine (Corrinne Yu seems like a God-Tier programmer, no doubt she has a good team behind her)
The Sound Design (Tojima <3)

Do we know who the composer is though? I thought they were going to reveal that soon.

Can we sacrifice a Grunt at the altar of the french leakers in order to get something tomorrow?

I have plenty of fun between Asura's Wrath/Binary Domain and VITA but I wouldn't mind some Halo 4 news. At this point I'm kind of spent from having to compose myself and not cry like a baby to get something with Forerunners to dream about.

They would rather eat it~

It's going to be a collaboration between Breaking Benjamin and Skrillex.

The main theme will be called "Blow Me Awubwubwubwub".

Sounds like an underwater orgy

Re-read Cryptum and read Primordium.
Cryptum made a lot more sense now, and i liked it a lot more than the first time i read it. Now it even felt more like Halo than originally.
As for Primordium... A bit too long or too slow, can't really say which. Damn interesting revelations though. The ending is a bit odd, timeline-wise though i suppose this will be explained later on.
EDIT Oh, wait, i didn't read it carefully enough. Interesting.

And while confirming some things from Halopedian, i somehow managed to wiki walk into Marathon wikia, in there, to Drinol and then i remembered Sharquoi.

http://www.halopedian.com/Sharquoi

Other than that, we never got to know about them. So what are they? Might they appear in Halo 4 finally? IIRC, Frankie did note here that "Conversations from the Universe" has not been forgotten...

It's funny. I think the Active Roster is Reach's best contribution to the entire series. For a game with such a strong multiplayer component, the Active Roster is pretty much essential. The information it effortless conveys is important and having it all laid out for you is just perfect.

You can see who's on. Who is partied up into which parties. How long a party has left in a game and overall score. You can find all of this out in seconds in one screen for most part (sometimes two!) - something that used to take a serious chunk of time and many, many deep dives into the 360 OS.

Going back to Halo 3 feels like a generation backjump due to the lack of Active Roster and I honestly cannot imagine playing Halo in future without it.

It's such a core part of getting online now, it really is an essential feature going forward. Agree it's Reach's best addition to the series; getting on Halo 3 a while back, my first thought was, were is everyone?

My kids were watching me play CEA the other day, and were shocked at all the things you couldn't do; they're used to all the things that accumulated through the series. No, I can't use that Wraith; I'd sprint if I could; nope, the Grunts won't go suicide on me; you can't use the sword yet; and so on. The Active Roster feels like one of those things, it's just a core part of the game and would bee a step back to remove the funtionality. I hope it returns.

I don't like that during the MM process active roster goes away.

I imagine there's implications to keeping it up when the matchmaking process starts. If you left it up for example, people would tend to yank their party by joining someone on their friends list if they didn't get rivals/gametype they didn't like and bringing everyone with them.

I know in Halo 3, as long as the party leader has an open lobby they can join, they can attempt to join it via the FL and you can Bring Party, yanking your entire party out of the voting screen, so people could be DNF'd against their will fairly easy if the Active Roster stayed there at all times. In the current setup, the party leader has to back everyone out into the lobby context, at which point the AR comes back signifying that it's okay to invite/join people again.

Even Anniversary's weirdly stapled on Active Roster was a big improvement over the previous games. Would have been real nice for ODST, but I also liked how they really used that screen space since they knew there'd never be more than 4 people in a lobby.

Probably like 5 pages late but I believe the TTL HaloGAF fued stemmed from the fact that both sides would regularly have teams of 8 going into Halo 3 BTB. For a while there it seemed we would get matched up against them nightly. I think BS Angel used to run with them at the time too. Needless to say HaloGAF came out on top.

Just lock the option to join parties off like the do with the "press B to exit matchmaking"

Looks like the next xbox codename is officially durango https://twitter.com/#!/Cry_SeanT/status/174513741046620160

Was it TTL we faced in the Halo Community Tournament? Or HBO/someone else? It was the one where we pooped on them initially, then they selected AR starts on some poopy Forge World BTB map, and won in a ridiculous last second plant.

And then we pooped on them again.

Speaking of, there should be another Halo Community Tournament. Maybe with more backing by 343 for more publicity. Better rules and such also. There should definitely be one before Halo 4 comes out. Perhaps over the summer.

Interesting blog post from Marcus Lehto.

I think it could have really been a swan song for me if some of the design decisions had of been different, and we've been over those things about 1000 times in this thread.

I guess I'd define a swan song of a game as a perfect refinement of the best things that the game had in the past, not the replacement of some mechanics with entirely new mechanics that don't fit with the game or any past entries (bloom, armor abilities); and the breaking of other mechanics that are fine (warthog flips when it hits a patch of dirt, nuclear grenades, OP banshee).

I hope the design decisions for Halo 4 is to build and refine the best mechanics from all Halo games, rather than trying to replace them with new and untested mechanics/designs. New things are fine as long as they don't break shit we've come to understand/enjoy.

Unrelated, I guess I should know better than to post images in the midst of sage bashing/david loving.

Official MLG settings come out today.

Looking forward to Beaver Creek, Damnation and less grey!

EDIT: When are we all getting 24 fileshare slots again?

Assumed to be after the transition on March 31st. No idea on if they're just turning the "Bungie Pro" switch on the backend, would be interesting if Silvers could upload. That would definitely help the file repositories after 343 gets file shares working again eventually.

I had to play 35 games in Infection this weekend just for Condemned to show up for that Defiant achievement. I am not playing Reach Infection ever again.

I feel sorry for you.

This caught my eye

But I was given a chance to take one more look at it with fresh eyes.

To do this, we didn’t simply skin the Halo 3 engine with a new story and fancy art. That would have been easy (and probably would have made the powers above us much happier). Instead we decided to do it right and rebuild the game from the ground up – because it was the only way we could bring this final game to life and do it justice. We built Halo: Reach to be one of the most sophisticated and feature rich games the world had ever seen. It took everything we had, but when Reach finally launched out into the world we felt proud that it could stand up to the legacy of Halo created and built by Bungie.

I wonder what Microsoft thought of the final product considering they would have been much happier with a reskinned Halo 3? Reach is rather a drastic depature from Halo 3.

Could this also be a gentle hint of what to expect from Halo 4? A back to basics approach that plays closer to Halo 2/3? Seeing as 343 is founded from within MS I can see the publisher having a greater degree of influence on the design philosophies of Halo going forward.

I think he's talking about project cost there. It was already mentioned in one of the vidocs that Microsoft essentially told them they'd have no problem phoning in a game on the Halo 3 engine to satisfy the contract, and Bungie elected to not do so.

Microsoft is notorious for being cheapasses with their game division.

You're not quite interpreting that correctly (in my opinion).

MS wanting a "reskinned" Halo 3 is less about gameplay and "fan desires" and more about cost efficiency.

If anything this post would be indicative/predictive of a reskinned Reach, not another overhaul.

Once more, with feeling:

Yes, this again.

At the end of March we're going to lose some online functionality for File Share linking (for a few months, at least.) If HaloGAF wants to make a Reach montage I think it's now or never. We have one month.

Why this montage is actually going to happen:
- I have a Blackmagic Intensity Pro, six terabytes of storage, and a copy of Sony Vegas. No more juggling huge files between people, I can capture and edit from one location.
- It should be fairly easy to submit clips. Any format will work, since I have a capture card. No excuses!
- I will make damn sure to pester remind you to submit clips.

Submission format, ranked by preference (i.e. flexibility for me):
1. Link to full game film in your file share, with a time stamp and description (e.g. Triple Kill at 3:43).
2. Link to film clip in your file share. (Be sure to pad it with a few seconds before/after.)
3. HD capture of your clip. (Can also be a link to the film rendered on B.net)
4. SD capture of your clip.

How to submit:
- Send me a PM on GAF with a link to your submission.
- Email me a link, or even send me the file if it's small enough. (ncsuDuncan@gmail.com)
- Submit a link here: http://HaloGAF.com/montage

- You can submit as many clips as you want. Everyone will get at least one clip in the montage, more if time allows.
- We can vote on the soundtrack later, but I'm partial to using Halo music.

Deadline: March 27th. That's four weeks to gather clips, but still gives me a few days of flex time before Bungie.net shuts off file linking. This should also give Tashi enough time to fake an Overkill in custom games.

Thoughts?

Anyone see the new 360 today?

AmwYgu8CIAAZZP5.jpg

Wonder if a green slim is in the works for Halo 4. I love my Halo 3 360 but it's getting long in the tooth, and I freaking love green consoles.

Its funny because the Halo 3 Pistol has the exact same shots to kill as the Reach pistol does. It just goes to show how much the gameplay has changed when the weapon goes from unbearable in one game to viable in the next.

I wonder what the design team on Halo 3 possibly thought the H3 Pistol was useful for. It is literally a useless weapon.

I'd like to know this too. I tried the Killzone demo and found it incredibly lacking. I've played the Uncharted series, which was fun for a one-time playthrough. No idea what else to get. Maybe Bioshock Infinite whenever it comes out this year.

Infinite will come out on the 360, just like Bioshock.
Bioshock came out on the PS3 like 6 months after the 360.

It seems like a really cool idea, but a lot of work. Also getting clips will be a bit of a problem unless your going for a wacky funtage.

Woah that new 360 looks really plasticy. All the same the sooner it comes out the better! I can sense my Xbox is close to death im hoping when this releases that the older models drop in price.
