Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

No one liked my FF sprite discovery last page? :(

Ok...here's one you may not know. The Chrono Trigger Cast's ORIGINAL designs had one missing 8th character:

Yknw4.jpg

Toriyama: Just kidding, everyone worked hard. Robo and Ayla were the characters that changed the most.

Caption: A mysterious cut character, the “Old Man”. What a waste, not to use him. He’s got a certain charm.

Likely he was going to be Gaspar, dressed in his Royal gear:

Whoa, that's kinda neat.

The Mew Ditto thing was posted one and a half years ago...

And we do have a cloudbush searcher, although I'm not sure if it's still maintained. Found that post via searching for the Mew tag, though.

Edit: Oh, and I'm not saying it's bad to repost something that old, but it is old news to those of us that have read through the entire thread...

And on the Pokémon facts being boring thing, the ones that most of us hate are when people discover the name related puns ones. Ekans = snake, Arbok = cobra, Koffing and Weezing = Coughing and Wheezing, Articuno Zapdos Moltres = uno dos tres, Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee = Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, etc. Almost every single Pokémon name is a pun and most are incredibly obvious, so it gets a bit annoying to see them again.

I must have forgotten about the Mew-Ditto thing.

Lost 8th Character for CT is infinitely more interesting, though.

So, apparently in Pokemon Black & White, if you hold L and select a move it'll tell you what the move does. That would've been nice to know a while ago.

Not really "shocking" for people in general, but it was for me, and today is the ideal day to post it, so I"m posting it. Be warned: this is only interesting if you're a Square-Enix fan.

Seven years ago on this date, February 11, 2005, I had the rigorous oral interview portion of my application to grad school at an elite Japanese university. Two days earlier I'd taken, and passed, the written test: you find out you passed because the next day they post a list of all the passing examinees' numbers like this:

1547_img1.jpg

You then go to your department's testing area for the next round, or go home disappointed. ^^; (In my case, the next written portion, on February 9, was the foreign language tests.)

So I got through the written parts and have February 11 marked on my calendar. It feels like that date reminds me of something, but I can't remember what.

The big day comes and somehow I survive the interview, with my thesis idea being accepted.

On the way home I suddenly remember: 2/11/1999 is the release date of the Squaresoft classic Final Fantasy VIII. If you bought it on release day, Squall's SeeD exam coincided exactly with real-life entrance exams at real Japanese graduate schools. You took the written portion a few days earlier, just like Squall, and today you had the more grueling "field" exam.

If you look at the calendar of student events on Selphie's blog (we didn't say "blog" back then, did we?) and notice what months things are in, you'll see that the directors probably planned it this way. And it also accounts for the sudden dearth of people wandering around the Garden in the main portion of the story compared to the opening CG: they're home for spring vacation!

The directors also chose 211 as the ID number of the best possible Chocobo World save file, and then very subtly hid this in the Ultimania guide that was released many months later. I wonder what was so special about 211 and 2/11 for them. February 11 isn't always "Exam Day"; it's the second week of February, and the exact date depends on the days of the week. Had mine been on 2/8 or 2/12 I probably wouldn't have noticed. The Japanese people picking it up on Day 1 probably did, though.

update7-26.jpg

Squall got his passing grade after the mission that evening and then they had a big party immediately after; we got ours the next day and the party was after that. (And I passed. I'm a "SeeD" too now.)

just wanted to give some appreciation to this post. Pretty neat info.

on the subject of shitty pokemon facts, i'm pretty sure that onix and charizard aren't just roaring nonsense in the anime... they're saying their japanese names.

Charizard is a combination of char and lizard. I know the l in lizard is missing, but in Japan they often mix up l and r, therefor I propose that rizard means lizard.
Please tell me you are trying to parody the typical Pokémon post and you aren't actually seriously posting this...

If you were serious, then I can't wait for the posts when you realise that rmeleon might mean chameleon and rmander might mean salamander...

And to avoid further Poe's Law confusion, I am of course being sarcastic above.

They never stole the Master Ball.

Worse, they weren't even AFTER the Master Ball. The Master Ball was just a reward for stopping them.

HOWEVER, this raises a far more interesting question: What did Giovanni want the Silph Scope for? In fact, what WAS Team Rocket doing during Gen 1? Was it just money? I mean, the base at Celadon sold Porygons, which, like Mewtwo, were manufactured Pokemon. The Rockets were at Mt. Moon, trying to get the fossils or moon stones or whatever, too, weren't they? What were they up to?

It also makes you wonder- Why were Blaine and Dr. Fuji making Mewtwo if not for Giovanni? The journals are silent to all but the fact that Mew gave birth. Why did they alter Mewtwo's DNA, though? This also debunks the Mew-Ditto thing, since in the games, Mewtwo was born, and not made in a tube. Worse still is that someone had enough time to sculpt statues of Mewtwo while he was in that mansion. So either they knew what they wanted him to look like, or he was there for a long time after having been altered.

More confusing is that Mr. Fuji left notes on Faraway island explaining that only the pure in heart could see Mew. So if Mr. Fuji had been pure in heart when he caught the pregnant Mew and brought her to Cinnabar, what changed in him and Blaine that they decided to conduct such vicious experiments, ultimately driving Mewtwo insane?

And what happened to the Mew?

Dude, you aren't making any sense. Why would lmander = salamander and lmeleon = chamelion? Clearly lmander is a reference to L'Mander Lewis, a New York MD who lived from 1803 to 1880, and lmeleon is actually mlmeleon and is a reference to Marty L. Meleon, a Teamsters retiree in Pennsylvania.

Pokemon is short for pocket monsters, seeing as a gameboy could fit into your pocket and that every cartridge had a bit of azathoth blood in it.

Someone make a Pokemon facts thread that's all stuff like this.

"Ekans" is "Snake" backwards and Hebrew for "Bloodless genitals"

OK, so that Pokémon "fact" I posted here yesterday was kind of lame. To be honest I had no way of knowing whether or not it was really mind-blowing since I never beat the original Pokémon. Please look forward to my next post in this thread which will be Paper Mario related, and--I swear--it will be an interesting video game fact that has not been posted in this thread or anywhere on the internet AFAIK. 100% original content.

While we're on the topic of non-mind blowing facts:

(From Metal Slug 2/X).

The bottom two banners read:
"I have diarrhea."
"I need a medicine."

There are some other unfunny jokes such as a sign that reads "Poisoned Food Restaurant".

You're half right.

Onix is yelling "IWAAAAAAAAAAA", as his Japanese name is Iwark (literally the Japanese word for rock, "iwa", and rock together). It's not that obvious so I guess they felt they didn't need to change it. I've always felt the Japanese voices are a bit better since they don't say the name as flatly as they do in English.

Charizard, however, is an actual animal roar...I remember one of the DVD commentaries mentioning it. I think it's either a lion or bear, pregant apparently.

This is like the biggest unsolved mystery of Pokemon, since it contradicts everything else the games tell you. The biggest theme in R/B/Y is caring for Pokemon VS using Pokemon as tools. Yet Mr. Fuji had a pure heart, and still he mistreated Pokemon.

there's Shigeru Miyamoto in Perfect Dark wearing overalls

not sure if posted

totally unrelated...

but the pelagic ii theme just started playing in my head... and perfect dark is now playing in my head... and now I'm on a nostalgia trip back to perfect dark... Holy shit, that game was the perfect sci-fi shooter of its generation. Hell, of future generations, too. It's insane how much content was crammed in that game!

PD was damn great, we need more games like that. Only Goldeneye Wii came close to give me that feeling

and...I just seen the truth behind Chrono Trigger's cover. i said DAMN MINDBLOWN

Which "truth"?

1. That Marle is using fire, which is CLEARLY wrong?

2. Except that she's not using Fire and it's actually correct, it's the triple tech Arc Impulse/Frost Arc.

3. Except that's not the truth EITHER, it's Toriyama basing concept art off a beta screenshot:

Perfect Dark was amazing. I still don't get why people remember Goldeneye more fondly. Perfect Dark was better in just about every way.

There's no denying that PD is better, but I'm pretty sure the reason it didn't catch on the way Goldeneye did was the requirement of an expansion pack to play the story mode. And even then the frame rate was a bit choppy, which is OK in the single player mode but made multi-player sort of a pain in the ass.

Do I win a prize for correctly identifying this big mystery, or only if I solve it?

The monster in the middle on the right image looks like an enemy from Dragon Quest.
Also holy shit at the origin of that concept art =O
