The assassin character in the other games look like they fit into the world. Anyone walking around in an outfit like that (sketchy looking hood covering face) during the American Revolution would stick out like a sore thumb.

Also wondering how well a game where you are killing the colonists will play out.

Other than the hood he fits well enough. I would like to see more of an effort to make him fit in realistically, but looking badass is fine by me.

I wouldn't have a problem with a female assassin, but I don't know why you'd be surprised that this one isn't female... I mean, it's not as though there's any reason it should be, or would make more sense to be.

As for the line of ancestry, the character is supposedly half-native, half-european (ie, colonist). So the bloodline could have travelled over, found a native wife/husband, etc..

Couldn't he also be one of those colonists that dressed up as Native Americans during the Revolutionary war?

If he's truly native american... where'd the bloodline tracing back to Ezio come from? I could just about see something travelling via the conquistadors.

There doesn't have to be a blood connection to Ezio for this character. He only has to be a direct ancestor of Desmond's.

I'm interested but also a little scared that it will play too much like Red Dead Redemption.

Those weren't really the times of close combat, were they?

The idea that the protagonist is going to be a native american killing colonists is blowing my mind right now. I must be missing something here. Otherwise this game will be hugely controversial. I don't even know if I would enjoy playing it honestly.

So this is a game about a Native American assassin in the American Revolution? I'm not seeing how this works. Who will the assassin be targeting? Also kind of surprising they bring such a similar outfit to the new character.

Well depends. Pre-American revolution there were a lot of different European powers attempting to assert their influence in the New World (France, England and earlier Spain plus the colonists). The Native Americans worked with various factions based on their own strategic interests. During the revolution there were Native American loyalists and others that worked with the continental army.

The interesting thing is the founders and their whole Masons connection. Will they be the bad guys or good guys?

I admit that it will probably be in bad taste if you are a Native American defendin΄ liberty or something jingoistic and revisionist when Native Americans got fucked over by everybody.
The whole American flag back drop is probably somewhat insulting to Native Americans considering the winners of the revolution stole all their land and forced them onto reservations.
In fact, the Continental Congress basically told them not to get involved in the Revolution.

Considering the tone of past AC games I doubt the Americans or British will be shown in a positive light.

You know what's hugely controversial? The Native American genocide. I'm sure people can deal with the deaths of a few virtual Americans.

Killing Americans is controversial?

This summarizes what I'm trying to wrap my head around. I can't wait to see the pr explaining this game.

Well in AC1 you were equally killing people on both sides (Muslims, Christians). They might do the same here.

NO!
It's essentially like that in every AC game. There's usually a more 'bad' faction, but the less hostile enemies aren't necessarily buddies with the assassins either.

Why are they keeping the same overall design though? Ditch the outfit.

Just like they've put in every game.

Honestly, Altair is the only one that ever looked like he fit in there. Watching Ezio try to "blend" is a joke.

The design is too complex for my tastes too, but I'm waiting to see it in action and in the kind of setting and gameplay they choose before I judge. The franchise has been steadily transitioning into a more combat-focused one than stealth anyways.

I've heard this before, but I don't really get it.

He fits well enough to me.

Period-appropriate dress shirt.

Leather pants.

Boots.

Cape.

The only thing that sets him apart is the hood, but people back then wore hooded capes too, mostly in the rainy seasons, but it's not as though a hood in of itself would get a second look.

People also carried around swords on their hips, so that wouldn't really stand out either. The armor (specially the more overt kind you unlock throughout the game) might push the bounds of credulity, but the 'look' still fit.

@the picture posted earlier...

an Assassin's Creed with Zorro would be awesome!

Think (The Mask of Zorro) with a Lair under a waterfall, it's like Batman and Red Dead Redemption combined.

So wait...

We've killed Germans, Russians, Middle Eastern people, Native Americans (Red Dead, Gun, etc), and any number of other nationalities.

But killing American colonists, that's unacceptable?

Probably just for brand recognition because the hood design is pretty recognizable as Assassin's Creed. Also the lower portion of the outfit seems to be a bit different. I agree though I'd like to see a totally different outfit.

Just think, with the inevitable clothier, we can become red coats haha.

It does seem like there is a long riding coat type thing that is hanging down in back thanks to his knee being up (which took me a bit to realize that he had a foot raised).

Still hope for a tricorn hat a la brotherhood of the wolf.

While I think the design for the assassin is cool 1700s North America has very little in terms of large unique architecture, which always seemed like one of the biggest draws of the series. Its important to note that there's way less people in those cities then say Venice, Florence or Rome. I also feel that the colors are going to to go back to lots of browns and dark shades of blue and red, but that's just my opinion I know very little of late 1700s fashion or design. It seems like a step back in a lot of ways to me. These thing are only important if the are keeping the same open world template though. If they instead take a page out of RDR book and make the wilderness a big draw instead of the city would be great.

I think you are spot on. Thats also why AC3 could be using the new engine.

Someone call Fox News:

"Videogamers killing founding fathers"

Personally I think game makers should do what they want and shouldn't be scared to take on certain topics. I'm just saying it will be controversial. Again, I am interested to see the full reveal tomorrow.

Spec-Ops: The Line will have you fighting US-Soldiers. So far no one has complained, then again the game hasn't really showed up one anyone's radar yet.

Why in the world would you play Rev before ACII?

I got Revelations just a week or so ago, had a go at AC1 when it first hit and since then did not care for the series. Revelations somehow found it`s way to my Ps3 so i tried it and found it to be quite good.

He's probably one of those baffling people that skip cutscenes and only care about "gameplay"

And I do care about gameplay greatly but the story is just as important sometimes. I finished Metal Gear Solid 4 around six times. First play through i watched all of the cut-scenes lol.

The style is thematic enough, but will all the fancy ornamentation and such, you could spot him easily in a crowd.

Altair legitimately used his robes for stealth and fit in the environment he was in.

I'm not too upset, them sacrificing some functionality for badass-looking-ness is okay with me, I just don't think Ezio blending in crowds is very convincing. Probably why they're increasingly subjugating the stealth elements of the series.

Interesting. I read recently that MOH tried to call the terrorist side in MP the Taliban but had to change it, and there were going to be Taliban missions in sp but they had to remove them.

I didn't really enjoy the part in BF3 where you play as a terrorist shooting up the civilians subway/mall in Paris either tbh. Similar to the way I'm not sure I'd enjoy killing American Colonists.

Yeah, screw consistency and consumer/brand recognition.

This was a small bone I had to pick with Rev, but it bothered me they threw out the design crispness of the assassin white/red colors and grayed everything up. Happy to see them returning with the color tradition here.

Are we at that stage now where [someone] is going to get extremely offended by a fictional setting in a fictional game? The same game that has always had the warning that this game was made by people of multi cultures and faiths?

Good. Make it as offensive as it can be. I want it.

I think I may cry with joy. The American Revolution would be a fantastic setting, a definitive departure from Ezio too. Feudal Japan and Victorian London were the settings I was hoping for more though, mainly because I think a Japanese ninja/assassin would be awesome and I'm a London-born Brit myself, so seeing my hometown in such a great series would have been fantastic.

I can't say I'm amazingly clued up on 18th Century America though, what kind of settlements did they have? Am I looking more at Red Dead Redemption for influence or something a little more Metropolitan so to speak?

The poster looks great, I don't know much about that period of history, but something tells me that there is not much stuff to climb, not like in the other games.

I was initially kind of bummed out about the colonial American setting because there'll be no interesting architecture, but I just realized that most of the Northeastern US at that time would be pretty densely forested. What if urban parkour is being replaced with some sort of tree top running? I could be down for that.
