Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

Well he said someone guessed it correctly. The guesses at the time were just 8,4,2, so obviously 2 would be the answer there. He said he thought it would be 1GB but was surprised, so 2 would be what I think he was implying.

Or 8.
8 GB is always possible.
:p

Oh my. Surprising as in GOOD surprising, or as in BAD surprising?

Also, feel free to edit my face into that image... seeing as I'm late to the hype, just plonk me in the corner trailing behind... *sniff :'(

I'm still going with 2GB based on what he said, but if not then 1.5 I imagine is the minimum.

I'm in the 2GB boat as well. I'm just worried about RAM bandwidth using GDDR3. I trust Nintendo will not design a new console with bottlenecks after acknowledging previous errors, but optimizing for that eDRAM will be key. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the 10mb in the 360 was enough to store a 720p w/ 2xAA frame without tiling. I.E., utilizing the Wii U framebuffer will require different techniques than what developers familiar w/ the 360 are used to, but the end result should be noticeably superior.

Well, the Wii U supposedly has 32MB of eDRAM. Which would be a pretty big boost.

I've heard that number as well. It seems likely enough when looking at IBM's eDRAM. I'm merely saying that it will require some tweaking to fully exploit for 360 ports, which is obvious enough, but is worth repeating. It gives them some room to be flexible too. A talented programmer could also use the framebuffer to store a 1080p image and utilize a software AA technique. We probably won't see the system being mastered like that until much later though. It's always nice to have a system that can still surprise you with its visuals a few years down the line.

Hi, I'm new to GAF.

Have been lurking since the first thread, loving the crazy speculation.

Posting for the first time, directly to the hype train! :D

Hopefully, though, launch games should at least perform fairly well, simply because they'll have more room to work with than the other consoles.

Man, I can't wait to see what Nintendo does with this thing.

Can you link me to the IdeaMan post in question? I've tried to find it, but I can't find anything amongst the pages upon pages of Nintendo-Gaf collectively losing their minds. lol

To be more precise, i was quite surprised by the amount of ram expected in the retail version.

I think this message is a bigger hint that the previous one :p

lol, no, not THAT surprised :D

My guesstimates were in the 1GB, maybe a bit more, range. And it's more than that, for the moment.

Read that as you will.

Has anyone got the picture of the Nintendo conference with loads of bears? I love that pic.

I checked the thread this morning, nothing much happening. Then 5 hours of baby-minding later this madness.

Was something announced/leaked or is this just akin to the Reggifying of the nintendo direct thread?

Either way, I've been hyped since Ace's pre-E3 project cafe thread last year.

Yeah, throw in good ol' Gunpei in the image as well and it's complete.

As for GDC, I've been thinking about potential consequences of Nintendo demonstrating nothing new at all, and just have Chase Mii and Shield Pose in their booth. From what I can understand in the Meggan Scavio interview IdeaMan linked earlier in this thread, developers have complained in recent years that the event has become too media centric and that unreasonable pressure due to this has been built on them to reveal something extraordinary every time there is a keynote or other major happening. While I side with the developers here on the notation that GDC ought to be a relaxed event where the industry can come together and in an effective and professional way trade and discuss key topics, for this year's GDC in particular, I don't think Nintendo can hide behind this newly sprung agenda.

Official Wii U details revealed since E3 2011 have been scarce to say the least, and with just three more months until E3 I assume Nintendo wants to provide some kind of incentive to why people should stick around and debate the console. And furthermore, Reggie has mentioned that new information would be made available before E3, so if they decide to skip GDC (where people attending can eventually test the system and some software offering), where should we expect some goodies, at PAX East or the Starlight Foundation gathering of all places? Or maybe they decide to do a Wii U centric Nintendo Direct broadcast, but then they have the problem of people not having access to the system directly as they would have at GDC or E3, and with the Wii U remote playing such a key role in the marketing, I don't think it would be a good idea, though they could of course demonstrate other aspects of the console.

If they don't soon begin to distribute new information on the system, there's a chance people will lose interest, and another three month period of radio silence could turn people against the system, especially if Microsoft, Sony or Valve decide to unveil their next generation solutions. So what they are going to show in a few days will be interesting.

Damn. If only I was GAF gold. I'd be right at the front of that train.

Something I've been thinking about, and I know it's far fetched but with the rumored STEAM box and Nintendo saying they are colloborating with partners in new and surprising ways (something along those lines - bear with me), I can't shake the thought of some sort of Steam/Nintendo project.

Does GAF Nintendo Hype Train run on STEAM? :)

Damn, next revision is going to be longer..!

I think the top's getting a bit cluttered and I'm not a fan of the size of Pachter, him being larger gives him a bigger sense of focus and takes way the truly magical aspect of the image.

Everything else is absolutely beautiful though, much credit to you.

I wouldn't doubt a version of Steam Works on the Wii U. But like with the PS3, it won't be a full Steam platform.

Damn, next revision is going to be longer..!

Edit: Damn, some spelling mistakes.. sorry!
Edit2: Fixed!

Brilliant!

There was once a race between the Nintendo Hype train and Superman.

Guess who won. (Hint: It wasn't Superman)
