Halo 4 Interview With Footage, Probably No Beta [Up: Official Making Of Video]

I've responded to it a couple of times. There aren't "perks" in the game. And classic Halo is still there. But there are things we will be rolling out soon to put all of this discussion in a much better perspective and I suspect calm frayed nerves.

Is there any way we can have the MP3 for the song in the background? Bungie did it with the Lone Wolf song in their first ViDoc...please? :D

Thanks for helping to keep our blood-pressure in check. I'm sure 343 realizes the integral gameplay elements that separate Halo from the pack, and will do their best to keep them at the forefront.

I'm surprised Perks were even mentioned without even a follow up. That will only serve to get people riled up. Although you probably can't control everything that's said.

To the people saying some are resistance to change.not true they just dont want 343 to copy other tired formulas.if they want to do something to evolve then why not something entirely new instead of copying?

Is it bad bad that soon as a saw the woman producer I thought to myself" well this will suck"

I feel bad for thinking that but its probably true..

Not really sexist.. Just every game I have seen with woman producers almost always end up being boring as all hell and unfocused. Assassin's creed is a good example.

Wow you guys are overly sensitive. That is not even really sexist. Sexism would be " freaking broad going screw up everything as usual"

My post was a observation I've had over many years. Not just some irrational statement.

But in other areas I think woman are better then men based on observation... is that sexist also?

EDIT: I should say in the game development world. such as art directors.

Like I said on the flip side I think woman make better art directors on games. They tend to be more into the details in animations and atmosphere .

I didn't say because a woman was involved I said when it said "producer".
I wont repeat myself anyone can go back a read through the post not just jump to conclusions or you can just keep twisting it.

Yeah uh artistic talent isn't gendered. Can't even take a respite from sexism when I want to talk about Halo. Christ.

Shit man, I hope it has (Saga spoilers)
the captive from the Forerunner novels that they let out when testing the first Halos.

Actually, I just hope it has any of the awesome shit from the new books. They're so good, and I just love the universe of Halo that I hope some of those things make a comeback.

Stop bububu-ing, stop backpedaling, stop trying to clarify your medieval sentiment, just fucking leave.

Just shut up. Just go.

OK I will go. Sorry if I offended you and others it was not my intention. I was merely pointing out an observation with past action games with women producers. Not all games that have had woman working on them
Again sorry.

I think the wording for interviews should have been chosen more appropriately then, because as you can see from this thread, basically everyone is interpreting that as "we're CoDifying Halo".

I'm not saying you ARE, but I'm saying it kinda sounds that way.

But yeah, as someone else mentioned, balanced out 'perks' could work, in the way Zombies are super agile in infection but really really susceptible to gunfire.

Looks like guys are getting restless Frankie, I'd get that stuff out asap.
If I didn't think you were funny, I'd say your playful trolling is getting old.

Okay, maybe it's still getting old. :p

They really need to go back to the old school Halo-vibe and ditch jetpacks, shielding, and all of that bs.

Halo 3 and previous were great because the games were controlled by weapons/vehicles, knowing the map and playing it to your advantage, and raw quick reactions by players. That's it. Once you throw jetpacks and all of the other crap in, you have some Unreal Tournament bastardization clusterfuck.

Not only that, but the damn maps in Reach weren't even built to accompany the perks, mostly because it was impossible because of how many, very different, perks there were. The "map control" aspect of the first 3 games, where blue team might have high tower on lock for example, is thrown out the window when red team can jet pack up in 2 seconds or sprint over to it in 5. Halo has also had this interesting team dynamic where parts of the map control shift back and forth, but it's much more blurry and discombobulated in Reach.

Reach was a good game, but not a good Halo game, at least in multiplayer. If Halo 1-3 never existed, it wouldn't have been judged against them... but alas, they do. Keep classes/perks/abilities out of Halo, imo. It's "CoD-fying" something unique and tried-and-true already.

Edit: The preview mentions making master chief feel strong and elite like in the books, which sounds awesome! One of my primary complaints... Just hoping they can keep that in single player, and make multiplayer it's own thing. Not a tribes/UT/CoD crazytown mix.

Better do it quick, otherwise everyone isn't going to stop with the 'HALO COPIED COD PERKS'

Shouldn't have said perks :p

You expect HaloGAF to listen to reason when someone just mentions "Perks in Halo 4".

I honestly feel bad about all the crap developers have to take these days. :(

True, though I'd imagine they'd be very relieved today by the general reception which was something along the lines of 'holy FUCK that's impressive'.

Like honestly, I still don't physically understand how it looks that good.

Cool, can't wait for some more, clear info, as everything we know now is a bit hard to follow. I have faith though, and Im excited for some changes.

I think it's too early to be worried about these armor enhancements and how they effect gameplay as there's so much we don't know. I can't help but draw comaprisons to Street Fighter X Tekken and the Gem system that game has. When it was revealed, a lot of people were worried about balance and how the 'purity' of the game would be destroyed by COD style perks for a fighting game. But now that we know how they work and that they seem to be somewhat balanced (at least for now) people seem to think they're a great addition to the game and add more depth. Hopefully there will be a similar situation with Halo 4.

If the fence is where the people who are right sit, then yes, I'm right there on the fence.

Things Quake and COD share:

Speed of movement
Duration of player encounters/battles

Things Halo and Quake share:

Weapons must be fought over and picked up to be used
Maps are built around weapon spawns, and the battles that take place for them
Map control is therefore an integral part of playing the game, unlike COD

Ignoring the gameplay similarities between Quake and COD and reducing it simply to speed and encounter rate is the reductionist view I have issue with. Weapon balance skewed towards high damage, death rate, spawn time: all these factor in to what made Quake what is was. A frenzied twitch shooter; an FPS sub genre. No one should be thinking of Quake 3 and go, "you know what, I could sure go for some Halo right about now." Yes, it has maps based around weapon placements, as most mp shooters in the past did, but that does not directly effect how the game (Quake) actually played in practice.

As I've said, Halo is slower and more methodical. It also has a focus on vehicles, even though the more competitive aspect of its fanbase doesn't necessarily put a spotlight on it. Generally longer game life adds an emphasis on teamwork and weapon balance favor mid-long range, precision firing.

Really?! The fighting game community actually came around to gems? Hahahahaha omg. Lesson learned I guess. I got the caution for them but I never got the downright hate for them. I can't wait to pick the game up this week.

Oh thank God. Great to hear! And yeah, thanks for putting up with us. I'm sure you and the entire team are very busy people, and it's nice to see this amount of community/dev interaction.

We didn't mention them. That's why I put it in quotes. That term was coined by someone else to interpret stuff they saw in the UI. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things and to be expected during announce fervor. And yes, it's partly our fault since we re rolling out more information about this stuff at a later time.

Frank, please tell me assassinations are still in. Taking this wicked pleasure away would be too much...unless it's replaced with something even more epic.

I just care about how much ice cream sandwiches this game will contain. Seriously

Yeah, perception will be a little bit skewed due to limited information on it, I really can't blame the "perks" comparison. That is seemingly the closest thing to what was described at the event.

Okay, maybe I am in the minority on this one but I thought the assassinations were clunky and really unnecessary. For such a fast paced game they were out of place.

What can be more awesome then doing assassinations on your foes?

Assassinations with DUB step music in the background!

As long as they can't be triggered accidentally, which happens almost all the time in Reach.

I want neck snaps and throat slitting.

^JD, it may happen to you "all the time in Reach" but it rarely happens to me.

The footage that was there looked cool. Really great to have the main Halo series back.

Also, maybe it's just me not seeing the inside of too many game studios, but 343's digs look incredibly awesome.

darn... sounds closer to halo reach than halo 3. I was hoping for Halo 4 to return to its simple roots.

frank said that many feel its closer to 2 or 3 and it certainly looks like it from the brief glimpses we saw.

EVERY game that introduced perks, class loadouts, and gameplay progressive unlocks has utterly ruined the core experience it was originally based on

Uncharted 3 is the big one that I remember most recently, I have no confidence in hearing this and by definition, the nature of such features contradicts equality. This removes the fundamental of Halo to favour this insane artificial method of preserving MP games (and I dont doubt that dangling that carrot in front of you has overtaken quality gameplay as the means of getting players to continue supporting the game)

I just am not optimistic at all after reading what I read and history has shown me that all my favorite games have crumbled, despite the PR team assuring me otherwise.

It's not perks I even care about, it's the idea of unlocking gameplay altering mechanics through progression, loadouts, etc. I just think that there are better ways to improve the sequel, and I'm just not confident in hearing something like this. It's not personal, but developers like Guerilla Games, DICE, Zipper, Naughty Dog, etc. have all watered down their games in favor of hyping up features that the core community were valiantly always against, and I dont see Halo 4's introductions of perks (however they may be), class loadouts, and progression unlocks changing that.

I miss the simplicity of running up to an opponent in games like Halo where all that was different between us was the guns we picked up, but with things like perks and whatnot it introduced these advantages other players may not have. Personally, I am absolutely burnt out on such mechanics and am sick of seeing them in so many games.

I'm also hoping that a single shot rifle equivalent of the DMR is still in the game. I might have missed this confirmation, but the precision this weapon offered has always felt better to me than the BR. And in the event it is, I hope it isn't hopelessly overpowered by the new BR.

It replaced the classic pistol as my favorite all purpose gun.
