Halo |OT2| Hyper-Athletic Speed And Mass And Weight and Power

they havent outright said it, but if you read between the lines it seems clear there will be no beta.

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/81853...4_interview_at_microsoft_spring_shocase_2012/

Got it. The "huge interruption" is a pretty obvious no. Honestly i'm torn. I guess it's better that they get the polished product out sooner, and having a beta would delay that process. Or it would minimize the amount of internal testing, debugging, etc. that they can do before release. But I hate the idea of waiting until Fall to be able to play this game for the first time. Betas are so much fun!

Aw well. It's going to be a long 7-9 months...

So when do the floodgates really open for H4 info?

We have PAX, E3, and what else coming up that I should be watching out for?

E3 will probably be the coming out party for the Campaign, among other things.

I'd watch for print coverage over the next month or so, but yeah. E3 is probably the next big one.

GamesCom. Europe's biggest Videogame Expo/Convention whatever you want to call it

Edge said there will be preview in their next print issue. I do think they wouldn't print a preview with the information from the Spring Showcase. There will definitely be more details.

What's up guys and gals?! Halo 4 looks fuckawesome so far! Thanks for the write up Devo (LTTP). there's no way I can keep up with this thread and stay in gainful employment, you all are in beastmode with all the new stuff to discuss. 7 pages since last night, wtf! Stay golden :)

*googles E3 2012*

DAMN! June 5! We still have a ways to go but by then the H4 marketing campaign will hopefully be kicking off.

*crosses finger for some kind of E3 guest pass giveaway/contest from 343* ;)

Edit: Gamescon looks like it's in August so it looks like E3 is where the megatons will be dropped...

Rad, thanks for posting. At approximately 8:42, Frankie drops this interesting bit:

Frankie in the Gamereactor.dk Interview said:
You'll see a lot more flexible pieces in his armor this time around, and that's actually going to come into play in the game, in the cinematics, and the way that you navigate your way through the universe.
Wild speculation here, but this further points towards armor changes as you progress through the campaign, a la Metroid.

The playlist update is live btw!

Gamescom is usually to try out the game. Last year, you could play multiplayer on the new maps and the previous 2 years were firefight for Reach and ODST. I don't think there's ever been a big announcement on gamescom for Halo.

Yeah, in the a weekly bulletin, they also mentioned that throwing away a chest piece should sound like an anvil dropping.

There have been no forge questions in any of these interviews, I would've liked to get some little tease on the next evolution of that.

Someday we'll look back at all these little hints and either be like "THAT'S WHAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT" or "...What happened to that idea?"

.

can you imagine how nice halo 4 in-engine cutscenes/trailers will look? i mean halo 3's and reach's (aside from the ghosting) looked FABULOUS and its pretty clear that 4 is a huge step up (from 3 especially). on top of the graphical upgrades, i'm even more excited to see how the story is approached with these cutscenes. lastly, largely for the first time since ce, they should be chalk full of actual new "wow" moments of epic new shizzle to discover.

man, i'm amped. 3 more months till e3.

questions or not, they wouldnt have said anything. 343i has taken the lead from bungie about being very specific with the hand out of info concerning the series. yesterday was our first glimpse with just the barest of multiplayer features dolled out.

I am very, very happy that 343 decided to go back to the traditional route of developing multiplayer maps. No collaboration between MP designers and campaign designers and they're not going to be in the campaign. Bravo.

Thank god for this.

Please do not tell me this plan to have purpose assigned to multiplayer practically ousts the campaign plot?

I mean, help me if I'm wrong by assuming that we'll end up fighting other spartans in this game. That would suck.

Also, I was hoping the multiplayer being somewhat different form campaign would allow 343 to break the Halo lore and bring back old weapons like the pistol. I'm still on the side that believes fuck the Halo canon when it comes to multiplayer. Just allow the Pistol as an unlock for beating the campaign on Legendary and I'll be happy.

Can't forget to add that hopefully there will be more DLC DLC DLC DLC maps, weapons, etc. preferably free ;)

and the MLG crowd begins their mass tweets about random weapon timers..

I guess 343 is doing questions here. I did these:
As someone who loves competitive gaming (ie MLG) I had a few questions that maybe you can help some of us with:

1) Will Halo 4 have "Aim Acceleration"? Halo CE/2 didn't have it and it was great, but it was added to 3/Reach, will there be a option to toggle it off?

2) There was news of "random weapon timers" is that permanent or can we also toggle that off?

3) Ranks played a big part for many halo fans in Halo 2/3, Arena didn't cut it in Halo Reach. Will it be back for Halo 4?

4) Will there be spectator mode for the Halo series finally?

Don't show the enemy. Don't show the ancient threat. Don't show the singleplayer.

i'm sure we'll get a trailer, but yeah, hopefully without blowing any major reveals. could be as simple as the end sequence to stage 1 in which MC makes it out of FuD just in time and the camera pans out to some crazy huge epic forerunner world entirely new to the series. then a few breif cuts to other, action packed but mainly spoiler free bits from throughout the game. then fade to black, then logo, then date.

I don't know how many of you guys follow the Literal trailers of games/movies/wahtever that Tobuscus puts out, but at the end of the Mass Effect 3 one, he asks what one he should do next. One of the options he gives is Halo 4. He did one for Halo: Reach as well.

Kind of agree, although I didn't really like the overt use of artwork instead of actual geometry in some of Halo 3's cutscenes. Don't get me wrong, those things were gorgeous, but it was so obvious to me that I was basically staring at a painting rather than an actual world... (see the cutscenes between "Cortana" and "Halo", for instance). That hampered the experience for me quite a bit.

That said, I can't say that I've encountered that problem in either ODST or Reach, so I'm pretty confident.

Thank god for this.
It's not about where they're coming from. Will it matter if there's another wave of Snowbound, Isolation, and Sandtrap? I think it is going to be highly interesting how 343 develops these maps. Going back to creating MP maps that will be designed for specific gametypes, be it CTF, Assault, Plots, or whatever they have new is a definite road to follow. Felt like most maps we've seen in H3/Reach were more slayer oriented than anything else.

Reading through Devolution's impression, this part struck me:

... Then there was Wraparound, just wooo beautiful. If you've ever been in a well lit Cathedral, the ambiance they managed to capture with their new lighting techniques. Holy moly. In this one apparently the lighting will come into actual gameplay, there is actual glare that people can take advantage or be victims of depending on where they stand. ...

I really, really hate the sun height in some BF3 maps (davamand peak). You can't see shit if you look up the hills between first and second base in Davamand Peak, but people standing on the hill have a clear shot on you. Not fair :(

I so don't want to know anything about campaign until I have the game in my hot little hands. I may have to go on a GAF diet once the info inevitably drops, because I tried my best to keep Reach as fresh as possible but I still found out stuff I didn't want to.

...which sucks because GAF is my main internet dietary staple food. :-(

I don't have a problem with it if there are other places to shoot those people from. Placement has long been an aspect of Halo, putting light effects in such as those on Wraparound reinforce this point if anything.

Tash I think it's time you relax and watch Snipedown: The Movie again to feel better.

The only time I've watched his stream he was raging because he was getting dumped on by randoms. He was like -15 in a game full of people from his stream. He threw his headset and booted everyone from the party when it was done.

Was priceless.

I see it as a failed experiment. No one used them after shorter and more specific callouts were made by players.

I think they were poorly implemented by Bungie, if that tool was available to the community then it would be more useful. Yeah, people come up with their own callouts or use MLG's, but I think it could/could have worked out.

Yup, that was actually the basis for my post; I should have specified. It's pretty common for behind closed doors showings that cover more detail, or for additional media to be provided to the print press. They can't hit the online embargo, so they get additional stuff to put in their issues; it helps keep the coverage moving as well. I don't want to assume too much, but it's pretty seldom for Edge to have a preview for a major game - especially Halo - and not have new content.

Holy crap. :lol

This the image you're talking about?

Found it.
Yeah, I absolutely love that shot, its insane. Here's a larger version of it, and another shot I really like-

Damn, seriously, everytime I see those I am blown away. I can't get over how good the SP footage looks, so atmospheric and detailed. I really, really hope they can bring stunning visuals into the MP like we see here. Sometimes Halo's MP maps have trouble imagining themselves in a visual way that has the effect that those shots do.

Hey, what's the deal with the shoulder pad in this gif: http://i.minus.com/ijscV1fOIvFP6.gif

It's not even attached to anything!

Yeah, that bugs me about the shoulder pad.. I wonder if there is a reason for that and if it changes with a certain gameplay mechanic?

Hey HaloGAF today is my birthday, 1 more year till I can legally get wasted! :D

Also the Bulletin tomorrow should be interesting, hope they clear a few things up in it.

Happy birthday!

Eh, while I agree that BF3 does it poorly, or rather goes overboard with it, I don't think it has to be bad at all. Other games utilize lighting in unique ways, and I really don't think it will be bad as long as it is handled appropriately. Plus, the lighting can really give the visuals some depth, which IMO in past titles would fall flat. With a few additional effects like lighting and some subtle depth of field I think Halo would really look stunning.

Da fuck is "aim acceleration?"

Here's a thread on it.

The aiming system in Halo Reach, just as in Halo 3 features Aim Acceleration which basically adds a noticeable amount of artificial positive and negative acceleration to your aiming, which in turn 'smooths out' your aiming. In other words, the amount of time it takes for your aim to speed up or slow down to a stop relative to your thumb movement is expanded over time.

This creates the sensation of sluggish aiming; the feeling as if you are skating on ice or under water. I am exaggerating with these examples, but those feelings do resemble what is present in both Halo Reach's and Halo 3's aiming system.

For those of you who would like a visual representation, here are some graphics to illustrate what I am referring to:

Smoothing vs no smoothing: http://i.imgur.com/gYwvb.png

Smoothing: http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj58/KurtiZ-NZ/EdhKb-2.png

No smoothing: http://i.imgur.com/jilGU.png

Looking at those graphs, it may not look too bad because it is simply showing moving your joystick right to the edge and back. But imagine doing heaps of small adjustments (like you need to to keep your reticule on a moving target), and you can see the effect builds up.

Bungie's old games, Halo 1 and Halo 2, did not feature this interpolated acceleration to such a noticeable degree. Shadowrun and Call of Duty are the same way. Because of this, the aiming felt much more responsive in those games compared to Halo Reach and Halo 3.

Why would Bungie add this? It seems like it would only be a bad thing?

It makes aiming much more manageable for people who are new to video games. For those who are playing a FPS for the first time, aim acceleration/smoothing allows their aim to be smooth even though their actual input (thumb movements) are not so much.

The negative side effect is that for those who are more gamer-oriented and comfortable on a controller, it feels very awkward. It doesn't allow us to twitch our aim as we can in Halo 1, Halo 2, Shadowrun, and COD, and it feels very sluggish. Killzone 2 suffered from the same sensation, except to a much more extreme degree. Because it smooths out your thumb movements, it restricts you from flicking your aim on to an opponent, or from making tiny adjustments to where you are aiming because it gets smoothed out, and sometimes doesn't move at all depending on how small the joystick movement was.

Now, on to my proposition:

I understand why this level of aim smoothing is helpful to those who are new to gaming, so in order to make both those who are comfortable with a controller and those who are new to a controller comfortable, giving us the ability to disable aim acceleration/smoothing or adjust the amount with a slider, would satisfy everyone. PC games offer this option, as well as Unreal Tournament 3 when it came out on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

How awesome would it be if 343 implemented a controller setting under advanced options that is something along the lines of:

Controller settings Advanced Options

Aim Smoothing: Enabled / Disabled

or instead of just ON/OFF option, have the 1-10 option like with Sensitivity

It would not be difficult for 343 to implement this if we show them we would like it in Halo 4.

Some of you who play other games know exactly where I am coming from. Others may not. If you have not experienced what I am referring to, try playing Halo 1, Halo 2, Shadowrun, or Call of Duty MW1/MW2, followed by Halo 3 or Halo Reach. After doing so, you will probably be able to relate to this thread. If you still do not feel it, remember: I am not proposing to eliminate anything. Just the ability to change it depending on your preference.
