Fez's dev to japanese developers: "your games just suck"

Well that's just ridiculous. They aren't starving, but if the games they make that you like don't get the appropriate support, they won't be able to continue making those games that you like. Seriously, you aren't understanding this?

This is not support. This is called buying a game you like. Te reason you are buyi g it is not because the developer is a swell chum or a friend in need. He made a videogames you want to play.

When I say I "support" something, I want that to mean something. I don't want that word to be reduced and subsumed into a fetishizes consumerism.

What the fuck. You are equating a person who assaulted someone to a person who was asked and question on a panel and gave a douchey answer. One of them did something wrong the other is just trying to deal with the whole internet being butt hurt over nothing.

Well, he's already been compared to Hitler. People are just going down the list of "Horrible people I can compare to a guy who sucks at sharing opinions". Joseph Kony is hot right now, so he's probably next.

Actually, yeah. I kinda imagined exactly that for many posts in this thread given the phrasing and labeling/name-calling used. That, or some tense, hunched-over key drilling accompanied by half-breathed cussing. (This thread just seems unusually large and quickly-built for the base content.)

FWIW, I'm actually doing a backflip per consonant and a cartwheel per vowel.

If you buy a game because it's good, even though you don't want to you're still supporting the developer by buying that game.

Support is not the intent, it is the result. I bought the game not as an expression of support. I bought it because I wanted to play a videogame.

That is great an all but that doesn't change the fact that you are still supporting a developer with your money. They take the money you spend on the game and use it to pay for staff to keep their business running and stay afloat. Sounds like support to me. No one buys a game, developer gets no support and closes down. You need to realize that supporting a developer does not somehow demean or hurt supporting a cause or a charity.

Yeah, next time someone says that bras are made to support ill slap them and say something about starving "childer" in Africa.

So? Providing them with money is a by product. Why would I care if the creator of said product is an asshole on the internet? I don't stop buying bread that I enjoy just because the baker turns out to be douche on the internet either.

Then alot of members of Neogaf have tragically confused buying videogames with expressing their voice or, even worse, with the idea of helping someone.

I could understand if the game was produced in a way that exploited workers or created massive pollution, but I doubt these same people care much about that.

Instead, they only care when someone says something they disagreed with and their idea of responding is through denying a consumer purchase. Its the saddest conceptualization of a political voice I've ever heard.

If you want to protest something, protest something real. Not a rude comment some dude who made a videogames made. If you want to support a cause, go find a real one. Videogames are not about causes. They are rarely about anything meaningful. They are about consumerism and entertainment. These should not be confused with things that are important.

Yeah right. Sorry if people are care about things they enjoy.

Exactly. Maybe if the baker turns out to be exploiting child labor or doing something more serious than saying mean things, I will decide to buy a different brand, but my goal was still never to support the baker, it was to get a loaf of bread.

People who enter gaming purchase transactions with the idea of supporting the creator as their intent are thinking backwards. Supporting the creator was never the reason to buy Fez. The fact that it looked like a good game was.

I don't think it's about support. It's about choice.

If you have two really cool videogames in front of you, they both look awesome, have gotten numerous prizes, they're made by people who need money, they cost exactly the same, they're the same on Metacritic, the press gushes about them, they're on the same platform, they're probably going to give you the same level of enjoyment, and you know one of the developers of the title on the left is someone you really don't like because he's lacking tact and generally acts unprofessional among his peers, which one do you pick?

Of course, that's not the reality. In reality, you have 15 really cool videogames in front of you.

EDIT: On second thought, I give up. Please don't do drugs.

Totally.

As someone who read Cerebus all the way to the end, this is so tame in comparison.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Any word from the rest of the Fez development staff? I'm quite curious what they all think of Fish's behavior.

They probably hate it. Phil Fish seems like someone you'd have to overuse the word "begrudgingly" around each and every hour of the day. He's a complete dickhead, but the SanFran FratFuck community that is the videogames journalism scene have decided he's 'cool' and that gives him a free pass to act like a dick to anyone and everyone.

If I won $30,000 from a prize you're not even supposed to be entered for twice, I'm fairly certain I wouldn't be rushing onto twitter to tell naysayers to choke on my cock. But then I also don't wear a specific frame of glasses to fit in with all the geek chic natives. What a wretched human train-crash of a man.

You mean we should buy Chris Brown music if it's good? Ok, I guess you could put it this way.

lol well let's hold off on that one for a bit but...

I'm saying that there's quite a lot of "zomg ima not buy this game cause it..." and while some people don't, you can be that some people do. If you want to buy the game used, or not buy it to 'stick it' to the dev or whomever then there's nothing wrong with that. However, if you buy something because it's actually good then that's fine as well.

Personally, the barrier to entry for this game is now higher given how he's saying things. I'm not willing to give it as much of a chance as I would with some other games/genres/devs/etc.

Not on the internet only, also live on a conference (GDC).

That's great and all, but deciding to not buy it to not support the dev is completely valid. You might not think that him being a dick warrants not buying a "good" game but clearly it matters to other people.

I'm not protesting, I'm making an argument. But maybe that distinction is now imagi art to people as well.

I can't wait for the day when being concerned about "foreign politics" means being angry about the dubbing on an anime.

Your right because to them videogames and intenet forums are the important stuff.

... and that's not what I was saying at all. :lol

I think it's fair to say that a lot of people don't stick to their principles. Unfortunately for those other devs being tainted by Fish's out of control ego, I take great pains to stick to my principles, and will not even entertain the thought of buying Fez now that I've seen what behavior Phil Fish prefers to display.

Meh. The Twitter burn was hilarious. It's not like he's started any beef, it was a comeback. Not classy, but video game designers are not my role models.

*Still getting Fez.

I really don't get the faux outrage, honestly.

Then you weren't interested in it to begin with and you shouldn't care what the creator of it thinks, right?

On the contrary, I had been very interested in it when I first found out about Fez a couple years back. It's a bummer that I won't get to play it now, but that's the price of speaking with your wallet. Same deal with certain publishers and non-game related companies due to their practices.

Also: don't pretend it was just a stupid comment. They guy humiliated another person in front of a large audience and then continued the same disrespectful attitude on twitter, proving that he wasn't sorry at all for treating another person like shit, nor has he shown any insight into the problems the japanese games market may have besides "japanese games suck".

Not a peep, because he probably doesn't care.

We're maybe 600 unique posters in here. Clearly, we're not gonna change the world. He just won a fat prize. Can't really go wrong at this point. If I were in his position, I'd probably have other priorities as well.

Sure you think you're speaking with your wallet.. but it isn't going to make any kind of an impact. You're just denying yourself something you want for no good reason.

I really don't get the faux outrage, honestly.

It seems to have churned up a lot of antecedent bloodlust that's been dormant for a while, like the recent, anti-San Fran Game Journo offshoot that's cropped up in the last few pages. There's also the fact that it's not coming to PC that made waves a while back.

All these things are coalescing on the Clooney/Wahlberg/Reilly Fishing Boat that is the videogame Fez.

Sacrifices, dude. Plenty a person can live with, maybe you'll learn about them one day if you grow up. Also: that's the same mentality people use when explaining why they don't vote in elections.

So we're not only have people calling him a "cunt" and "a piece of shit" ITT, but we have people making obscene blanket statements about games journalists, making snide comments about his appearance and labelling a "human train-crash" for calling out an arsehole on Twitter.

And this Fish guy is supposedly the arsehole? lol.

To some people, child exploitation is not as serious as someone saying mean things on the internet, apparently.

Unless none of those people protesting own anything made by Microsoft or Apple.

I don't even know what your point is anymore? Are you complaining that people won't buy things because they don't like the creator?
