Look at this poster, you would think the things are wacky hijinx monsters. But they were scary as shit man. Way more then Gremlins, who were more annoying then anything.

I will give Gremlins one thing, they had this stone cold motherfucker right here. He seen some shit, he has done some shit. All he wanted was a bite to eat, but they started hassling him. He took no joy in vengeance he wrought.

Both series are great.

Both have created 2 movies that are good.

Critters 1 and 3 I think? The Easter egg one

Both gremlins movies are great. We're overdue for more I miss gizmo

Love both franchises.

Critters 2 is the best of that franchise, whereas I prefer Gremlins 2 to the first one.

I think I read somewhere that the only way Gremlins would return is if they do a reboot/employ CGI, though I think that was the prediction by Joe Dante. That would be fucking horrendous.

Oh man, as a kid as I was actually scared by the first Critters movie.
Gremlins never scared me.

So imo, Critters win.

Also have to love the part in which they go on a hamburger-spree !

Critters had shape shifting intergalactic bounty hunters. One looked like an 80s rock star. The other looked like a Playboy playmate. Gremlins had Billy and Gizmo. Yeah, Critters wins there.

Critters 1 and 2 are just damn fun, but I do prefer the twisted sense of humor of Gremlins.

I watched both recently. Gremlins flies off the rails a few times trying too hard to be cute and zany (bar scene anyone?) but does have some genuinely scary parts. Critters was more consistent and creepy, but not quite as much fun.

Oh man. I fell in love with Phoebe Cates when I first saw her. I was like 7. Wonder how bad she's turned out...

Yeah she was my first love too, I was about 9 I think.

This is what she looks like almost 30 years later.

Edit: Beaten. But that's ok... you can't have enough pictures of Phoebe.

Critters is more of a straight-up horror movie. They toned down the grislier early drafts of Gremlins.

Horror and comedy is difficult to manage but I think Gremlins pulled it off successfully (American Werewolf in London is the reigning champ). Gremlins 2 went way broader with the comedy and managed to pull that off too. In retrospect it's an impressive mini-franchise, actually.

Critters is basically just another 80s post-retro horror film with the same kind of plot as the others. You could pull a fucking Joseph Campbell's diagram for 80s "tiny monster" horror films I would think.

But Gremlins had a fairly original plot with a creative creature transformation concept. That makes it win in my eyes.

That and even as a 7 year old I thought Critters was a shitty movie.

I don't know why Joe Dante tried to make a Looney Tunes movie again when he already made one with Gremlins 2.

Man I remember when Gremlins 2 came out, it was a marketing beast. Anything and everything they could stick gremlins I swear they did. I don't think anyone topped it until Jurassic Park.

I know. I just love how ridiculous and over the top the second one was. I really loved how they had two different intermissions. One in theaters, another on the VHS. Thankfully they hid the VHS one as an Easter Egg on the DVD of Gremlins 2.

I do want to see a new Gremlins movie. Just a chaotic, mean spirited, twisted movie.

Great, now I have the theme stuck in my head.

They need to bring back comedy/horror movies.

tucker and dale vs evil has been only good horror comedy i have seen in decade. anyway gremlins is boss, critters movies had their moments but they really do have that b-film feel.

I remember seeing the Critters movie where they were stuck in an apartment building... and the one directly after that when they're on the space ship.

Gremlins was infinitely better. That and the Gremlins 2 video game on the Atari ST was hard as fuck.

I remember my school showing gremlins 1 to a bunch of little kids and scaring the crap out of them. It was during a summer camp thing and I guess it was a knock-off tape or something, anyway the person showing it watched the first 15 minutes or so and concluded it was about cute little teddy bear type things suitable for 6 year olds.
Gremlins wins for that alone.

Yeah I agree with Critters being more scarier. Gremlins was pretty much a children's movie with comedy.

there was some brutal stuff in Gremlins.

-the science teacher getting eaten alive
-old lady being blasted through her second floor window (via malfunctioning stair-lift)
-guy and his wife being killed by a bulldozer (they might have survived; can't remember)
-Phoebe Cates' chilling story about her dad dressing up as Santa, getting stuck in the fireplace, and dying on Christmas Eve.

I think I was about 6 when that movie released and some of that shit scared the hell out of me.

They survived. They were in the sequel.

And Gremlins is a lot more brutal and twisted as an adult. I loved it as a kid, but watching it recently I never realized how fucked up it actually is. No wonder I have a twisted sense of humor if I was watching stuff like Gremlins as I grew up.

Gremlins a children's movie? :lol Most certainly not.

Spike melting away like that was one of the more brutal scenes in that film.

I appreciate the films a lot more now though as an adult. Love them even more too. Watched Gremlins 2 the other day. Always gets a laugh out of me. Imagine all of the shit they could take the piss out of in a new film, given the going-ons since the last film.

They didn't survive in GREMLINS.

Being alive in a sequel does not change the experience of watching the original.

We dont have confirmation one way or another in the original. It is implied that they died, but they dont talk about it later as far as I know.

It was marketed as a kids movie. Toys, etc. I had all the storybooks with vinyl records from Hardee's in the 80s. Had Gizmo and Stripe plush as well.

The 80s was when we werent afraid to scare kids or have danger in the movies. Just look at Neverending Story or Goonies as more proof.

That's great, but you are missing the point.

To a child watching the film, those characters died. It's scary stuff, even with the cute and funny monsters.
