That's great, but you are missing the point.

To a child watching the film, those characters died. It's scary stuff, even with the cute and funny monsters.

I love the scene when the Gremlins are getting shitfaced in the bar.

...and remember the pimp and hoe gremlins? Good shit. When I was a kid I just thought they were having fun, wearing funny costumes lol.

I like Critters a lot. But Grimlins is my shit.

It's become a Christmas tradition of mine to watch Grimlins on Christmas Eve.

Still blows my mind that my Grandmother let me watch that shit at like... 6. lol

I was knee deep into Terminator and the Arnold filmography, along with tons of horror films by the time I was 6. My parents were basically like "just never do this stuff, and know it is wrong to swear." And then dont look when there is nudity. But I saw and heard so much stuff as a youngster.

Gremlins a children's movie? :lol Most certainly not.

Spike melting away like that was one of the more brutal scenes in that film.

I appreciate the films a lot more now though as an adult. Love them even more too. Watched Gremlins 2 the other day. Always gets a laugh out of me. Imagine all of the shit they could take the piss out of in a new film, given the going-ons since the last film.

Kids in the 80s were made of sterner stuff, we had lawn darts and shit. Hell Monster Squad was a kids movie.

I remember some of the Critters movies had nudity, so childhood version of myself was more amazed by them. As for quality, Gremlins is probably better.

I can't choose. I love both Gremlins movies and the first 3 Critters movies. The 4th one in space was terrible though.

I always liked the part in Critters 2 (I think) where a bunch of them formed into this giant ball and started rolling around eating everything it ran over.

Same. I'm like that with my son too.

Is this in a fight or which movie(s) is better? I think the Gremlins would take the critters in a fight. They have that smart scientist Gremlin and Spider Spike.

Gremlins was entertaining in a slap sticky way, but Critters was entertaining in an absurd horror schlock...

I would like to see a Freddy vs Jason movie for Critters/Gremlins, bring back the alien bounty hunters from Critters 2 and they team up with Mogwai. Fuck, I need to start writing this.

tucker and dale vs evil has been only good horror comedy i have seen in decade. anyway gremlins is boss, critters movies had their moments but they really do have that b-film feel.

Gremlins was actually sorta more gruesome than you'd probably remember it. I saw it not too long ago and I was like damn, this gremlin is getting brutally murdered in that blender!

BTW, Rambo Gizmo wins.

I remember my local video store had Gremlins in the horror section when I was a kid.

I also think about Gremlins every time I eat pickles. 1-0 to Gremlins.

there was some brutal stuff in Gremlins.

-the science teacher getting eaten alive
-old lady being blasted through her second floor window (via malfunctioning stair-lift)
-guy and his wife being killed by a bulldozer (they might have survived; can't remember)
-Phoebe Cates' chilling story about her dad dressing up as Santa, getting stuck in the fireplace, and dying on Christmas Eve.

I think I was about 6 when that movie released and some of that shit scared the hell out of me.

Don't forget this:

I watched it for the first time in around 15 years with my girlfriend (who had never seen it before) recently.

Fun fact: My girlfriend is Taiwanese, and whenever there's Chinese script/speech in a movie I ask her if she understands it. 9 times out of 10 her response is "It's Cantonese."

I think that's turned around in the past 10 years or so.

Gremlins, hands down. Come on, nothing is better than a mom microwaving a puppet!

Plus, the movie is just amazing in general. Love that film!

Gremlins 1+2 were much more beloved to me as a kid.

But Critters 1/2/3 legitimately scared me back then, so they have that going for them.

Gremlins. The second one was so meta before anyone knew what meta was.

I remember being all "WTF" as a kid during the sequence where they appear to fuck with the cinema projector. That and the Hulk Hogan section. Why they kept the cinema projector scene in the VHS and broadcast cuts I'll never know.

I now need to see the Munchies. I am mad at myself for not even knowing of its existence.

I hope it has a "hey hey we're the munchies, we love to munchie around" joke.
I was able to guess the "this chuds for you" joke with Chuds 2: Bud the Chud, so let's see if I can go 2 for 2 here.

I watched Gremlins 2 at the drive-in with my parents when it first came out and it was raining real bad and we thought the movie projector actually broke.

Looking it up, my brother was 6 when he saw that movie with us, which means my brother and I saw Gremlins 1 at least a year before that because we were fans...making him 5 and me 6 or so. My parents didn't give a shit, apparently.

These creepy little fuckers from the 80's still haunt my dreams. There's nothing like it in today's horror movies, they don't even come close.

I didn't get to see Gremlins 2 at the cinema (I was 5), but I remember my next door neighbour (6-7) crying because the cinema wouldn't let him see it even with his parents.

Gremlins was the better movie, hands down. Critters was still pretty good though, and had a decent sequel, unlike Gremlins.

I did up a pitch doc for a gremlins game a few years ago, you played ad gizmo running around hiding from adult gremlins setting up eloborate rude goldberg - incredible machine style physics traps to kill them in all sorts of gruesome ways.

Even had a little street scene modelled of the town in the first movie with snow and Xmas lights, gremlins everywhere running amuck overturning cars and shit.

Obviously never went anywhere though but I've got the screenshots and pitch doc around somewhere

Critters was freaky as fuck but the I vote Gremlins 'cause without Gremlins there wouldn't be Gremlins 2 and without Gremlins 2 there wouldn't be the hot restaurant scene with that hot redhead...

Gremlins gets my vote. Both magnificent films, especially the sequel. But I can't think of these franchises without remembering the finest example of the darkly-comic-horror-with-tiny-creatures genre:

THE GATE

More WTF!!!! moments than any other horror flick I saw as a kid. The movie lures you into thinking it's just a moderately creepy kidventure...and then the shit hits the fan.

I remember being a kid and watching Critters alone. I was kinda terrified. Gremlins weren't as scary, but I loved both franchises!

Man that is hard. I give the edge to Critters because I have more nostalgia for that series (never saw Gremlins till many years later) but Gremlins 2 really is the most entertaining of all the Critters and Gremlins combined.

Although honestly, it's hard to top some of the crazy scenes in Ghoulies 2. My friend and I used to reference scenes from that movie all the time.

Anyone remember that piece of shit THE MUNCHIES?

Best part about the Munchie(s) series is just how drastically it changed within one sequel.
