Capcom: Resident Evil needs to be more actiony, survival horror = sales less than CoD

didn't Revelations do good though?

Blame the people that think RE4 is the best thing ever created.

Revelations likely ends up doing ~600k worldwide by the end of April or May. Respectable, but not the huge hit some expected it to be.

As for your latter comment, I'd blame the giant RE5 fanbase over RE4 fans. RE4 is genuinely one of the best games ever crafted.

Yeah sorry Capcom, I forgot about you. Dead Space is the premier flagship title representing Horror games. Resident Evil series is leagues behind Dead Space.

I can't wait until Nintendo releases it's next Smash Bros that sells like 15 million+ copies. Capcom and the FGC are going to be in for a rude awakening if their plan is to ape whatever hits the jackpot. It wouldn't even surprise me after hearing their thoughts on Dragon's Dogma.

Yeah how come Street Fighter hasn't become an SSB clone since SSB sells so much more. Why isn't Megaman a Mario clone considering how well it sells. Why is Resident Evil the one that needs to become like Call of Duty?

It's sad but people just have to accept that Capcom don't make quality titles anymore, and that's that. Treasure what you had people. RE1-3 will forever be perfect and they can't take that away at least :)

Is every big company going to make the stupid argument that unless sales are CoD levels a project isn't worth it?

CoD is an anomaly, not the norm. Just like WoW

I don't understand why this is so hard for companies to understand.

I still feel there are a large number of people that just buy CoD and nothing else. You see their shelves and that would be the only game/game series there. People like this don't care about playing anything else no matter what it is. This is the only thing that allows the sales numbers to make sense. I'm not sure how sales are for Madden now but I believe it was treated like this as well in the past. People would buy that and just that every year. They didn't need or care about anything else. Well maybe some NCAA at times.

Bullshit. What RE 5 fans are calling for A CoD clone or ORC?

Isn't that another series that will be abandoning it's horror roots soon? I'd heard for a while now that Dead Space 3 would be the final "horror game" in the series, with future titles focusing more on action.

RE4 was the turning point for the series. The original concepts seemed to be much more line with the slower horror feel that the series was known for. It ended up becoming a highly praised action game.

As a fan of the series since the beginning, you know, I'm fine with the improved gameplay and action. The series has almost always had action, but that's not the problem. The problem is that they seem to think that more action cannot coincide with excellent horror atmosphere. It can. It seems like they think that it's either action or horror. Why not have excellent action sequences and tighter gameplay, but mix it with creepy settings and horror-driven setpieces?

I don't think that many fans want the series to revert back to its slow, plodding and outdated gameplay, we just want that atmosphere back and I don't think that it's something that has to be excised in order to have more action and better gameplay. Revelations started out well and was pretty good for a couple of hours, and then the game just turned into a sloppy mess of repetitive action and uninteresting setpieces -- that's not the solution they should be aiming for.

That's not exactly what I meant, so allow me to clarify: RE5 sold huge numbers, likely due to amazing marketing, among other factors. It was a far more streamlined, action-oriented game than previous entries in the series, RE4 included. As a result, RE5 fans are inadvertently encouraging Capcom to dump horror in favor of more action elements.

If that's your standard I assume you haven't bought anything but indy games in the last years ?

Yes, yes. Because other companies has fucked up DRM requirement where you have to be online all the time to play the game. Other companies also perverse their famous series to be something that it's not (O: Racoon City), or outsource their game to talentless hacks (DmC). Or re-re-re-releases their titles for maximum caching and screw their customers who bought the 1st iteration of the game. Capcom fucking up their IP is just one of their many offences. As long as they continue to do so, I'm not going to give them my money.

Megaman is too old and fat to jump like that anymore. Smash is also not a 20 million unit seller yet. Capcom needs more than that when they've got such a vocal fanbase in the FGC. Also, RE4 and RE5 did well from a sales standpoint despite being pretty different from the old school games. It's no surprise that they are taking it up a notch seeing as people bought the shit out of RE5.

All Capcom needs is one successful smash clone and we'll be banning items at EVO for sure lol.

Edit: I may as well be spouting bullshit since there is no way I could ever prove my point with the Smash stuff. I think we can all agree that they are clearly looking to ape what is successful right now instead of what is proven and unique for them. That is bad.

i'm glad resident evil on the ps1 was my first and last experience with the franchise. this way, I don't feel disappointed by the utter shit that gets released these days.

This was going to happen regardless of how 5 turned out. Even if it had the quality of 4 we would still see this shit.

Just like despite DMC4 having the best sales in the series they dumped it off on a western def hoping for GOW numbers.

They said Revelations was action focused.

But not action focused enough.

Solution time!

One of the reasons that the survival horror genre is in the shitter is because of Capcom. Silent Hill and Resident Evil, by far, were the biggest survival horror IPs in gaming. No other franchise was close. Capcom turned its back on the genre and Konami farms out one of their major IPs to other devs.

Well at least they're being honest about this.

Now if only they were this honest about Disc-Locked Content...

Or full-priced expansions to their games 8 months after the original release...

Or their DRM methods...

Or Mega Man's future...

Or DmC in general...

Baby steps I suppose.

keep the quality and the hype up and people will buy it.

i think RE6 will do well... but it all depends on how capcom delivers it.

This is why I will only buy RE games at bomba prices from now on.

Sad to say that I completely agree.

I was crazy about RE 1-4, but when I heard that RE5 was more like a mix between RE4 and Gears, I decided I'd wait for it to bottom out before I bought it. I still haven't gotten around to buying it, but I guess RE5: Gold edition isn't going to get any cheaper, so I may give in soon. I've been hoping something more like the old games would come along, but this article seems to suggest I'll be waiting forever.

Perhaps the critical reception, but the sales were very lacking.

1) 3DS and 2) 3DS. If they put Revelations on 360 or PS3, I guarantee it would've sold more than it did on just the 3DS. I would've bought it, for one, since I do not have a 3DS and have no plans to buy a 3DS.

Capcom completely doesn't understand the Biohazard fanbase that made them what they are, it seems. So fuck them.

Comments don't bode too well for RE6. RE4 was about as action packed as RE should get. Doesn't need to go further into the hard action realm than that.

So glad I didn't buy RE5.

Cya RE. I had some fond memories with you, but your creator has left you, and your step parents are secretly changing you into a corporate scam. I'll never forget your piano music, and that rusty crank!

Wow, the impact Call of Duty has had on this industry in the recent years is grotesque.
Is like a lot of these people left their brain at the door step.

Maybe, maybe not. I'd be interested to have seen what would've happened if RE5 had been much more horror-focused or, ideally, if Mikami had stayed on to do RE5.

Isn't it utterly bizarre that these big companies are chasing the CoD cash with their endless market saturating franchise destroying consumer screwing imitations of what is actually a pretty damn good series of games regardless of sales but not one of them have the balls or the sense to imitate what Nintendo do (which is to make equally high selling blockbusters that don't oversaturate the market and that don't rape their customers)? Is it because everyone worked out a decade or two ago that Super Mario (or in this case, Call of Duty) is an anomaly, and not the norm?

I talked to my son an everyday 12 year old Call of Duty fan today. He didn't know who the fuck Capcom are has no interest in buying a "Resident Evil" game no matter how much it's like CoD. Curiouser and curiouser.

Yeah... Why even stand up in the moring if you can't win a marathon....

or something like this. Why does everything has to have COD sales? Even a quater.....ah fuck it.... A tenth is still pretty good for many games.

you know, if everybody would produce CODs...where would the money go. Uniformity doesnt work in a creative enviroment.

edit:
also, RE:R was pretty fucking sweet. A nice middleway between both.

Wow, that's pretty narrow-minded. "If a game doesn't do huge numbers on a relatively young platform, screw it, that platform doesn't deserve it".

If you were a RE fan, you'd have bought a 3DS for RE:R. Simple as that, IMO. Revelations wouldn't have done much better on 360 and/or PS3, because the type of game it is wouldn't have worked as well on consoles, and the marketing it got would've been insufficient to support the game in the long run. It would've ended up an entirely different experience on those platforms, likely much more like RE5.

Why, Capcom, why?!

They can't replicate the success of COD, they should be focusing on good IPs, and keeping them good. They killed Resident Evil and are now looting the body.

Could you do me a favor and ask him if either of these titles look interesting to him?

Assuming you don't find the trailers too objectionably violent that is.

What a terrible motivation.

Resi 4 will be the only great game in the series I think. 5 was terribly disappointing and only certain aspects of 6 look interesting.

What's funny is that publishers think that the market for games has somehow expanded and these new gamers are looking for more, more, more......of the same.....in other titles.

The reality is a good percentage of those yearly CoD sales are made up of people who have no interest in anything but CoD and maybe something like Madden.

As stupid as that statement is, as long as the quality keeps up (I loved the hell out of 4/5/Revelations), I'm fine with more action-elements being introduced.

alternative title: creatively bankrupt game designers run out of ideas, race to the bottom.

They're not creatively bankrupt. They're choosing to try to follow in the steps of the CoD cash cow model. They're willingly leaving creativity on the floor for money. So it's even worse than what you described.
