Kotaku Rumor: PlayStation 4 codenamed 'Orbis', 2013, AMD CPU, SI GPU, Anti-Used Games

OP is the worst OP I've seen in quite some time. Is LiK a Kotaku employee or something searching for clicks? He completely omits the most interesting and important detail--the anti-used model.

Umm, people buy used because its cheaper, not because its used, and PC games can be gotten at those same cheaper prices all the time. Folks are intentionally acting as if the draw of used games is because they are pre-owned, and NOT because of the price.

Edit: Quoted someone by accident.

If they force you to have an always online connection, I think I'll pass. I got so sick of always having to update my PS3 I finally just disconnected it from the internet.

Drooling at the idea of a powerful heavily customized Southern Islands GPU. This thing is going to practically need 2+GB of GDDR5 alone to do anything at 4k (game-wise) with any form of anti-aliasing (other than MLAA tech). People shouldn't be shutting down the expectations so fast.. based on what I'm reading and if it's true, this system will be a dream for developers to work on. The bump in quality will be tremendous.

The PS4's GPU in particular, we're told, will be capable of displaying Orbis games at a resolution of up to 4096x2160, which is far in excess of the needs of most current HDTV sets.

One of Sony’s most striking goals was advanced haptics that can replicate sensations as specific as stroking a cat. “What we have today is solely based on vibration.” Tsuruta-san then envisaged the use of broader sensor technology that might read vital signs, body heat and facial expressions to gauge a player’s emotions and use them in the context of a game.

Sony also wants to drive still higher display resolutions (towards 8k x 4k) and frame rates (to above 300fps) while reducing response latency for highly immersive games to less than 50ms (we can detect latencies of 10-20ms, but this would still be a major advance).

It has begun, as it should be I think. While what is written concerns games, there is of course the Super HDTV/UHDV initiative to think about as well. NHK has suggested that this format (which is 4320p) may see delivery date for the mass market sometime between 2018-2020. Let's say PlayStation 4/Orbis launches 2013, that gives 4K a five year+ start to drive the 8K initiative and should if done correctly be able to land quite softly together with a theoretical launch of PlayStation 5.

LG, Sharp and Sony to name a few demonstrated several 4K television sets at CES this year, Sharp even had an 8K prototype. No price points or market availability were given though. But these sets should be available quite soon I think.

If it really is weaker than the 720 then they are probably aiming for a price advantage. Taking the success of the DS, Wii and 3DS into account and all (all weaker and cheaper than their competitors).

I will tell you one thing for sure. This thing will not push 4k resolution.

For 99% games, it definitely should not. But it's good that the GPU might be capable of at least displaying at such resolutions, for OS, 4K Blu-ray, and images. And if it's the kind of card capable of displaying at 4K resolutions, it's going to be extremely capable at 1080p PS4 games. Or at least, I hope developers would be targeting 1080p standard and not staying at 720p.

What I think is funny about no trade-ins is we went the AAA road this gen with fewer IPs and thi trend will keep on going when most games will have some kind of persistent mode.

It's probable that in a few years, your favorite franchise will require some kind of subscription which, as it already does for games you paid a ton of DLC, will make seeling your game a more conscious choice.

I figured that if XboxNext was to have no used games, ps4 wouldn't either. They'd both have to be in it together as going it alone would be suicide for them.

Lac of BC sucks. Wonder how that will pan out for PSN titles.

anti used games? wtf is this shit

but if it is anti used games, that means all games will be available to download from the PSN store the first day, maybe $5-$10 off?

Southern Islands gpu? I want to believe. At that high a resolution the gpu is going to have to pack some major power.

Also, looks like PS4 purchases will be like retail Steamworks games? Locked into your PSN account with the ability to download the title whenever to your hdd. Hopefully this is the case! Can take advantage of retail sales and still download the game to your hdd! Will be interesting to see how this will affect the used market.

I'm okay with this. I don't want to download GB upon GB worth of games anyways.

If the anti-used thing is true hackers have even more of a motive to hack this thing ASAP, which won't be good for Sony.

what? I found the whole article interesting. should I copy paste the whole thing for ya? if you find the Anti-Used Model so interesting, feel free to copy paste what YOU find worth discussing.

I wouldn't follow the pastebin given that it claims an eight core Intel CPU for the 720 and stuff like no hard drive on the PS4.

It says it won't be sold with a hdd. Sounds like it will be an "optional" accessory like Vita memory cards, or kind of like what MS did with the 360 hard drives.

Watch third parties fuck the Wii U over because it isn't Anti-Used games.

People think Wii U won't get games cause of specs? Wrong. It'll be because of Anti Used games.

I bought a shitload of amazing Ps3 titles second hand ( not from stores ) but from people when I got my Ps3 at first. It had been out for years and I had finally gotten one.

I already spent 300+ euro on a gameconsole, I'd rather buy a bunch of great old titles second hand and buy other games new and maybe trade in a few games I have already finished.

I seriously fund new games with old games sometimes. I sell them online or in a store. If this is not a possibility in the next generation, it can fuck off.

Now I'm imagining a future games model where you buy a game for $60-$70, need an online pass, have to be online at all times to play it, pay $10 dollars extra for Day One DLC (including $10 for the "True Ending" or additional disc-locked characters two weeks later), and you can't loan it out/sell it/buy it used, without paying a $30 price to "activate" the game, not including additional $10 for the online pass.

Yeah, that was mostly tongue-in-cheek, but man. Seems like I should probably just stick to Handhelds for the next generation.

That pastebin post might explain why DICE where all "2 Gigs is not enough for next gen games" a few weeks ago.

Hope its just BS. RAM is the big thing dev's seem to bitch about when it comes to the ps3 and even the 360.

Would think both sony and MS would go a bit overboard with RAM this time around

This rumour is total bullshit imho.

If Sony were really into sticking PC-innards into a box and calling it the "next" Playstation, they'd be launching it THIS year.

There is nothing to be gained from going x86 when PPC remains the standard for its competitors/port-mates; There's no need for that sort of general purpose CPU architecture in a games/multimedia machine, and as for abandoning BC... again, if this was the case they'd be pushing it out the door sooner so as not to be wasting resources propping up a service with minimal contribution to the value-proposition of their flasghip device.

Hate to break it to ya, but a bunch of handheld Vita games already have online passes. But I do agree with the sentiment.

But if the rumour is true you'll be able to take advantage of the BOMBA prices showing up left and right with games this generation and still procure yourself a digital copy. This is far more pro-consumer than current DD strategies outside of Steam.

Lol at people bailing on next gen if its true. Only person getting punished is yourself. They're not gonna give up those sales, if anything it will mean more new games sales. But I'm sure their gonna kick themselves when they see how many customers that didn't pay them, they lose.

Meh. I do trade in games but I've bought maybe 3 used games my entire life.

Um... you do realize that there'd be no reason for stores to accept trade ins if they couldn't sell those to other people, right? How many times you've traded in is just as relevant as how many used games you've bought.

I dunno, first we hear this rumor about Xbox 720 (Durango) and now Playstation 4?

Maybe game publishers are just getting more ruthless.

I remember being in a game store before the PS3 was revealed, and the clerk behind the counter was going on and on with some customers about how the PS3 would lock-out used games.

As long as games come on disc, this is unlikely to happen. They'll probably just continue having "online codes" and such, but the core game will not be locked out.

It's not anti-used games. It's anti-ownership. If you need an account to login to play your games, you don't own the game. You can play it as long as your account is active and in good standing - you haven't been banned, the service hasn't been shut down, they haven't removed access to that game due to hacking, or the rights to a US release haven't expired, or your internet isn't currently on the fritz, or you haven't said something that offended somebody in some forum somewhere, or... blah blah blah.

If you have to ask permission from Sony to play your games, you don't own them.

Agreed. Looking at my ps3 collection, only one game was bought used. The rest were bought new, but no where near full price.

God's had his chance.
None of this really breaks the deal for me. Never buy used myself and i never trade in as I love having my big game library (cept the shitty spiderman 3 game.. so awful) ... but having to always be connected like this is fuckin steam or something ... not ok. If my game console is gonna be a complete bitch when my internet goes out just like half the games on my PC i'm gonna start setting things on fire out of frustration.

Otherwise cool.. nextgengraficsomfgsohawt.gif

It was missing the specs before I added them in. :p

That said, if he wants to promote link clicking, I'm not against that.

Good luck on getting decent-looking games at 4k resolution. 2560x1600 is considered high end in the PC market of gaming, and that is pretty costly in terms of GPU power. 4k? On a Southern Islands GPU?

I think the problem is all these devs are seeing how much mobile gaming has exploded and thinking, "Consumers don't mind not being able to sell their games or rent them! Look at mobile gaming! Look at Steam!" The problem with this comparison is that people buy these games for either $1-$2 or they buy them when they're on super sale in Steam's case more often than not. People are much more keen to buy 30 games over the course of a few months for their iPhone that they can't re-sell than they are to buy 1 game for their home system that they're absolutely eternally locked to.

Just like there isn't a market for movies and CDs that can only be used by one person, there isn't one for console games. It's a terrible idea.

in Finland we don't have video game rentals at all really. there are some weird laws preventing new games from being rented out on the cheap.

so i would only be bummed out from loaning games and selling off games that were not as good as i hoped.
