Media Create Sales: Week 12, 2012 (Mar 19 - Mar 25)

The 3DS is kicking ass. It's deserved though, cause Nintendo is throwing everything they have to make the platform a success: price drops, quality first party games, big third party exclusives, new colors, special editions, lots of ads, ...

I'm continually amazed by how pro-active Nintendo has been to make sure the 3DS succeeds in Japan. I think they're completely banking on the home market, because the Yen exchange rate makes it the only market where profits can be made.

I'm also kinda impressed how the Vita is staying above the 10k mark. The importance given to that barrier is hilarious. However, I really hope Sony are thinking of fixing this situation, because even though the Vita is only out for a few months, the gap in userbase between 3DS and Vita widening every week with at least 50k has to be troubling.

This is a great point. On a business level, very sensible to note of.

Yeah, Garaph not working for previous weeks Famitsu charts at the moment, and there's no Dengeki archive for 2012.
Hmm, dengeki situation can be easily solved but famitsu will take a lot of effort to create an archive and I don't have the time and patience to do it since they are posts n Media Create threads. After all when the update of the database is finally ready that info will be in there.

p.s. That funny situation every week when numbers come out has to stop sometime. If you want to post them first start a new thread with all the info. Copying hw with "OMG 3DS" and "OMG Vita" doesn't give a trophy.

I'd be really surprised if the Vita doesn't break the 10k barrier

I think Sony's 2K Yen campaign for 3G model ends at 31 March.

PSP(2011 YTD)= 584,585

Looking ahead to week 13, 3DS+DS did 62,880 in 2011.

I didn't mean to create an archive for Famitsu, just when you post the latest chart to also post a link to that post at the bottom of the OP. If for example I want to see what the cut off for Top30 was in Famitsu for a particular week I don't think I can easily find that from the database.

Maybe I'll make an archive for Famitsu sometime though, I wouldn't ask others to do something I could do myself :)

I think you're underestimating Fire Emblem. The GBA and DS games all sold well over 200k. The two lowest are the GCN and Wii games.

s7Vwm.png

Not too shabby, but what were the installed bases of those systems at the time Fire Emblem released?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Using filters even at that amateur try you can find almost everything.

PSP software at first quarter is down more than 60% YOY. That's not strong.

Even more telling is the lack of strength from any major publisher past this summer.

Not too long ago I thought PSP was going to last through 2012 in relative strength but this year is less of a victory lap and more of a funeral march.

If I just want to know how much #30 sold in a certain week without knowing what title was at #30.

I guess you mean you want to see only the sales for #30 and not the other info. Create groups at columns so that you can hide whatever column you want.

I figured I'd try a new chart to see what people think:

Good for Poke + Nobu. It bodes well for BW2 which will probably move systems. I'm sure most people don't really care is not for 3DS after the initial disappointment.

GBA was at ~5 million when its first FE game was released, about 1 year after system launch. The game went on to sell ~350k.

DS was already at ~23 million when its first FE game was released, about 4 years after system launch. Like most of the other handheld FE games, it went on to sell ~250k.

I definitely think the 3DS game will help boost hardware sales. FE has a solid fanbase (sales numbers are surprisingly consistent) who will hop on board the 3DS if they haven't already.

Just wondering, how did you make the glowing blue dividers in Excel?

Office 2010 and Office Live both have a "glow effect" under text tools.

Here's some more context: Right now, if this week repeated itself continuously the 3DS is closer to catching the Wii's LTD in sales than the PSV is to catching the 360's LTD sales.

Awesome. Things just seem to be getting better and better for the Vita...

Christ, I really got dogged by KI. I didnt see it having a decent opening for the kind of game it is, and with it being in Japan. Like 85k into my freaking prediction on that game alone.

The 3DS situation in Japan is as great as the PSV situation is sad. It's like they are inverse opposites or something. I wonder if Sony really is shocked at how poorly the system is being received in their home territory or if they expected this.

Maybe they knew there just wasn't going to be much in the way of Japan centric software for awhile (ever?) and decided they had to launch anyway for whatever low numbers they could get out of the machine. In short, I wonder what their expectations are with the Vita not only in Japan but worldwide. People have so much more to spend their gaming money on these days than they did when the PSP launched and even though the Vita is a great machine it's going to take more than great hardware to move a significant number of units.

Nintendo certainly seems to have their home market in the basket for now and I hope the launch of the Wii U does not negatively impact the 3DS. Nintendo's focus on the 3DS since the price drop has been stellar and I would hate to see that change.

Have to imagine they expected to sell at least as well as the PSP did after launch, so about 20k or so per week as a bare minimum. Certainly don't think they were anticipating it'd be doing worse than the PS3 did.

Edit: Actually the PSP was doing around 30-40k back then, now that I look at the numbers more closely. Though it didn't sustain that for very long.

Nintendo certainly seems to have their home market in the basket for now and I hope the launch of the Wii U does not negatively impact the 3DS. Nintendo's focus on the 3DS since the price drop has been stellar and I would hate to see that change.

They probably should have expected it, but then against, common sense would dictate if they did expect it that they wouldn't have released in the first place. I guess their gameplan is for 3DS to sell like crazy and then burn out like the DS did years and years later then suddenly pick up the pieces with games the 3DS can't do graphically or something. Then again, this isn't the DS, and the 3DS can actually handle 3D games - even if it's not at the level of Vita - when the DS could do virutally none without developers radically changing the design of their game.

I'm not sure what they expected, both in Japan and the rest of the world. This is the most low level, unhyped, apathetic launch and post launch I can remember. There's literally no games coming out for months and months and people already didn't care. What the fuck were they thinking?

I've literally been asking myself this for weeks now.

Oh wow. Didn't expect Kid Icarus to beat Black Panther 2. Nintendo really is keeping the momentum stupendously well. Hard to imagine that it was even struggling out of the gate at first.

Sony really has to do something. Why can't they even do bundles or different colours? I'm hoping there's another Vita Gaming Heaven that actually announces more than one game...

Hopefully, Mirai can have leg it to 130k. Ganbare!

12./10. [3DS] Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games <SPT> (Nintendo) {2012.03.01} (¥4.800) - 16.731 / 99.656 (+3%)

Why did they launch this so early? What are the odds of it hitting a million?

Unless something drastic changes it's hard to see MH not being exclusive for the 3DS. The scary thing about the 3DS is that really it's biggest hitters are all still yet to come (2D pokemon, MH4, 2D mario).

Nah, I wouldn't bet on it. Such exclusivity would probably cost Nintendo too much, and Capcom is generally far too port happy as a company to pass up the opportunity.

I don't see MH pulling vita completely out of the doldrums though unless it was a complete exclusive overhaul of the game.

Portable MH being on a single system generation is a lot more viable for the brand than having different versions cross different systems.

Though I was editing my previous post =C

Pass up what oppurtunity? The vita fan base is barely worth porting too at all, especially for a game like MH where splitting the fan base is a bad idea. I think originally nintendo probably did have to fight hard for MH exclusivity (and probably still are) but vitas HW sales have got to be making capcoms decision a lot easier.

That might not be how capcom sees it. I wouldn't be surprised if they see a possibility where people with multiple handhelds end up buying multiple (distinct) versions of the game.

Hope KH 3D will do good numbers.
I'm predicting around 500k for launch week and maybe near 900K LTD, if it has legs.
