Wow - what an absolutely awful holiday season for the PSP. We all knew it had a horrible end to the year last year, but this lays bare just how awful it really was.

Not a single title in the Top 24, and only two in the Top 30 (and both of those were released before the holiday season began). The freaking Wii had 13 games sell better than any PSP game in the holiday season!

i was really poor and i could barely manage to bring home enough money to let my children survive, then i won the lottery.

now my kid left the house and got married, unfortunately his job sucks and he's even earning less money then i did.
But i won the lottery when i was poor, my kid is gonna win the lottery as well, why should i worry?

study shows if you win lottery once, it's more likely for you to win again!

Yeah, Nintendo is taking too damn long to release some casual games. Maybe waiting for 3DS redesign?

Where's Girl Mode, Animal Crossing, Tomodachi? These shouldn't be released close to each other, but Nintendo won't hold a finished game for too long.

Very strange.
Animal Crossing Wii U x 3DS? Lordt.

They released Nintendogs and the installed games on the 3DS are suppose to be their other causal games. I thought brainage came out in year 2 anyway.

Nintendo usually sells gangbusters during the holiday season so to see them take a large number of the top software spots is not all that surprising. Still, PSP was pretty much an afterthought this past holiday season compared to the juggernauts that the 3DS had, the few big titles the PS3 had and of course all that upper mid tier stuff on the Wii.

Famitsu Sales: Week 12, 2012 (Mar 12 - Mar 18)

10./09. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 <RCE> (Nintendo) {2011.12.01} (¥4.800) - 14.871 / 1.590.319 (-2%)

So Mario Kart 7 should be the first 2 million seller on 3DS. Animal Crossing was the first one on NDS ~16 months after launch.

More importantly, you missed my implication. That is, Vita following the same steps of PSP.

Dunno if you remember, but when DS started to explode in Japan, back in 2005, PSP kept selling in the shadows till a certain title names Monster Hunter came out.
Sure, PSP back had more games and its hardware sales were better, but the principle still holds. At that time, so many people were surprised PSP was selling so well "with no games". It became a meme at that time and most people gave as reasons its additional video and music capabilities.

Shortly, my reasoning is very simple. If Vita keeps selling 10k with such an extremely poor line-up, well, I wonder what will happen when some significant release will come out. Chances of the system to become an important player in the future is high. Even with so little gaming outlook. It's based on the past and current trends and thus it is a likely scenario.

That's why I'm surprised it keeps selling above 10k. It's a good surprise. They system is able to survive like that in the emptiness; it will absorb PSP's market once the games will be there.

I don't think anybody at Sony is considering this a good surprise for the Vita. And with Monster Hunter, Kingdom Hearts and Hatsune Miku on 3DS it would seem more people are upgrading from a PSP to a 3DS than from a PSP to a Vita.

Is this a fact or did you just add 30k from last week's 3DS sales?

He's talking about the little blurb Media Create has every time they put the sales numbers up on their website. Where this week they gave a figure for the number of Cobalt Blue 3DSs sold.

Well that's an insane coincidence, because there were literally 30k more 3DS units sold this week than the last (within 6!)

I did not realize how well Girl's Side sold on DS. All entries could manage to sell more than Tokimeki Memorial 4 on PSP.

I have always thought (do not know why) that Birth by Sleep was in par with mainline episodes on PS", but actually it sold 400k units less than 2. I am surprised at seeing Re:Coded numbers, by the way... Price cut? Because it started pretty low.

KH2 is the only abnormal title. No KH game will ever sell as much in Japan again. KH2 also sold more than any FF game ever in the US. In fact, I think it is S-E's best selling game in the US of all time, and possibly the best selling RPG ever. The series is not going to sell along those lines ever again.

Actually, I do think Kingdom Hearts was the S-E's best selling title in the US, with something like +3.2 million units.

Btw, it is also true that both PS2 entries sold incredibly well with Final Mix + Ultimate Hits editions (+550k for the first one, +400k for the second one), so the third mainline entry could put, imo, a million copies.

Fake edit: yeah, the first KH sold 3 million units in North America, while the second one (as of 2006) just 1.7 million (and this counts just 8 months).

Right time, right platform, right genre. FF was still extremely popular at the time, Squaresoft had tons of brand credibility, people didn't hate JRPGs yet, the Disney stuff in KH1 went over very well with audiences, the PS2 had tons of momentum at the time, insane marketing, years of hype, tons of worlds, lots of Mickey, lots of reasons really. Oh, and it had PotC too, which was INSANELY popular at the time.

I just don't believe that sort of magic will come together again for them to get that level of sales in the series. With each new entry on more and more different platforms, they're also making the main story basically impossible to follow which hinders the casual fanbase from totally buying into it. It was so much easier with KH2 because KH1 barely had a plot.

AKA the best bit of storytelling from the entire series. Less is more, but in this case it's still not that great!

They can still do a few million worldwide with KH 3, but its not getting back to KH 1/2 level.

Ah yeah. My bad. But based on the last known update, I think KH1 is at something like 3.3 million, while KH2 is at 2.3 million. I really don't think KH3 has a chance of making those sort of sales numbers.

But speaking of Japan, imo, it could pull higher numbers than Birth by Sleep; I mean, it could have the chance, but that will depend on the platform, how S-E will manage the game, etc.

The mistery of Re:coded sales still remains though :)

No mystery, it's a remake of a cellphone game that even the fanbase knew was a another rehash game that wasn't all that important to the overall story.

Yeah I don't think there's a mystery there. Coded was actually popular in Japan as a cellphone game, and it was released in an episodic form. For fans who played on their mobiles and bought all the episodes, it would have cost about the same as the DS game. It's no surprise that most of them decided not to pay that amount again just for a remake of the same game.

I think the most interesting game sales wise in the series is CoM. It apparently did a hell of a lot better in the US then any other region despite having very little advertising or good word of mouth.

I guess it is all down to goodwill from KH1.

Just a thought if we ever get a future number for 358/2 days and recoded will they include the extra sales from the 10th aniversary box or will they be counted seperately? For that matter will the box count towards thus weeks number for DDD ?

Not 100% sure, but I think the Anniversary Box will be tracked differently, since it is a bundle of 3 games. They definitely won't add it to the previous game sales, since that is never done. It is unlikely they will add it into KH3D's sales either. For ICO and SotC for example, they tracked the individual games, and the bundled LE separately.

Ok thanks, hopefully its not so limited we dont get an number for it

Ah yeah. My bad. But based on the last known update, I think KH1 is at something like 3.3 million, while KH2 is at 2.3 million. I really don't think KH3 has a chance of making those sort of sales numbers.

Yeah, last I saw, KH2 was just under 2.5M.

I wouldn't completely rule out a big number for KH3 in the US though. If they get it on the right platform(s) with the right marketing, it could still do very well. 358/2 is just under a million on the DS, (in the US) with very little fanfare. More than double BbS. Even Re:Coded was within about 100k of BbS. Kingdom Hearts seems to sell well to a more casual/kid-friendly userbase in North America. The PS2 was the perfect platform for KH1 and KH2, and if something on the level of 358/2 can get near a million in the US, then a full-fledged KH3 should still be able to do quite well on the right platform(s).

What am I supposed to do with combined totals, Famitsu!? Though those Pro Baseball Spirits totals are pretty great.

I was wrong about being able to do nothing with the combined totals--at least in some cases it's possible to see that there's been 0 change since the last known numbers for the individual releases.

I wonder if this is a case of SKU adding on an individual system?
[NDS] Tokimeki Memorial: Girl's Side 1st Love (Konami) {2007-03-15} - 105,091
FOR: There's an original release and a Plus release, with the last totals I've got adding to 102,676.
AGAINST: My numbers for the original SKU cut off at the end of its release year--perhaps we'd see it grow higher if we were getting Top 1000s in the next few years. It doing decently under the radar could also explain why a Plus version was released 2 years later.

Haha. Some of these numbers have 0 change with a several year gap, but that's been seen before. However, my last number for original release Kingdom Hearts is from the end of 2002. So it's going to have a 10 year gap for an added 2K.

Seeing how the interest in Black Panther 2 dropped considerably from the first game I wouldn't be surprised if it was very front-loaded and had some trouble selling through its first shipment.
KI on the other hand did very well.

Very high sell through for kid icarus also we know at least amazon did so maybe more places sold out, hopefully should hold up well if nintendo get a decent second shipment out

Tekken 6, Fist of the North Star, Baseball Spirits 2010 and Resident Evil 5 all have the same LTD I had before. We do have [360] MGSHD at 5600 by 02/12, so we know the PS3 version has sold 120k, but not an exact number.

I hadn't noticed the two Tokimeki 1st Love releases. It is in fact weird the LTD is almost the same as adding both editions. Famitsu didn't combine any other different edition for any other game in that piece (just the same edition for different platforms). The observations say no "Best" or "limited edition" (yeah, right...) sales included. It could be another case of an adjustment -- if you go by the 2008 Top 500 and 2009 and 2010 top 1000 cutoff, it can't have sold another 40k. But considering Media Create has basically the same old total 67k, it seems Famitsu did combine both editions.

What kind of legs are we looking for?

Yeah, Nintendo is taking too damn long to release some casual games. Maybe waiting for 3DS redesign?

Where's Girl Mode, Animal Crossing, Tomodachi? These shouldn't be released close to each other, but Nintendo won't hold a finished game for too long.

Very strange.
Animal Crossing Wii U x 3DS? Lordt.

It's pretty crazy that they still haven't at least given a release date for Animal Crossing. Since launch, my girlfriend has said she'd buy one at release but she's getting restless..

It will still be the same discussion :) Doesnt really matter if it drops 1k-2k other than the small psychological effect (compared to i.e $9.99 instead of $10.00).

Haha, I just think the conversation will stray from "how do they fix the Vita" to "IT FINALLY DROPPED BELOW 10K. PARTY TIME!"
