Andy Davidson returns to Team 17 to scratch a creative itch he’s had for fourteen years!

Ossett, Yorkshire, UK – Monday 2nd April, 2012 – In a week when Team17 announced, Worms™ Revolution, its most significant release of recent years, the UK’s oldest independent developer is delighted to reveal another surprise to its fans - the return of Worms creator, Andy Davidson.

At the height of his career, Andy quit the games industry to pursue other interests. “I left Team17 feeling I hadn’t finished what I wanted to achieve, but for professional reasons I knew I had to walk away”, commented Andy. “I’ve returned to scratch the creative itch that’s been bothering me for the last fourteen years. It’s nice to be back at Team17, it’s as though there’s been a revolution in the studio itself - there’s a real creative buzz about the place.”

Team17 Managing Director, Debbie Bestwick, is particularly pleased at the errant son’s homecoming. “I’d always hoped Andy would return but never thought it would actually happen. The passion he shows for Worms is almost palpable and I’m looking forward to see how his injection of fresh enthusiasm into an already highly motivated and skilled team will affect things.”

Andy will begin by offering the Worms™ Revolution developers his support. “The engine and physics in Worms™ Revolution are awesome, the team have developed a truly landmark game. I’ll be lending them my insight to ensure that the game balance is true to the spirit of the brand.” In addition, fans will be delighted to know that Andy has been working on a variety of new game ideas. Exciting times are ahead for Team17.

I did, but when I searched, I couldn't for the life of me find the new Worms game thread. And with this title, how could I not bump it?

edit: what happened to the thread anyway? I just searched for Worms Revolution and came up empty handed, yet I was reading that thread on my phone this weekend..?

Thanks! I couldn't even find it in DECK'ARD's post history haha. I'm cautiously hyped. Haven't liked the art style revealed so far, but to be fair we've seen next to nothing.

The best part of that Worms Revolution thread was the gaffer who was trying to school the creator of the game about the design intents of the game creator without knowing who he was talking to.

I'd missed my baby, and after going back last week to see Revolution (and spend a good time catching up and talking about things in the pub!) it finally felt the right thing to do.

The environment at Team17 now is much closer to how I personally felt games should be made, and being self-published also means there is more freedom to be creative and take risks. Which is all I've ever wanted to do really. I feel the industry at the moment needs independent studios to be strong, and to foster as much creativity as possible.

Revolution is also very refreshing when you see it as well, the series needed a bit of life injected to it after all this time and I will help with that as much as I can.

I'm very conscious of keeping the feel and balance of the game correct, and this is the focus of the team over the coming months which I will also be helping with. One of the first things I did on getting back to Bournemouth was dig out an old document I wrote commonly referred to as the Bible Of Worms ;)

It's good to be back!

Unfortunately for me (because I don't like it), I think a Nickel-and-dime Worms game could be a huge hit.

Would certainly work on Facebook.

I don't know. I've been sick of Worms since the second one. It's time to move on.

Well one of the other reasons for returning is the game that's been in my head for the past 14 years, and been evolved and refined over that time.

Worms was meant to be a trilogy, with Armageddon called that because it was the last one. I didn't get to finish it back then, which is why I felt I had to walk away, but I'd also had the idea for a completely new game. It's born from the same philosophy as Worms, but very different and the mechanics I find fascinating.

I'm looking forward to getting a prototype of that up and running at some point. There's an awful lot in my head that needs to get out! Name, gameplay, character design, it's all there.

When the time comes for it to be revealed, I promised GAF I would post the teaser image here first, and I will stick to that :)

That sounds interesting. Is that anything you'd be able to put online for us all to read or is it too... sensitive?

And actually I started writing the game just for me and my mates at school to avoid doing work really. I took over a corner of the art room and got them to put Amigas in it so I could do 'computer graphics' ;) People ended up skipping lessons to play it, my form tutor banned it, and that's when I thought I'm onto something here and my dream was always to get a game published so I thought let's go for it. Could go to Uni at any time, but there was no point for what I wanted to do. Overall it took about 4 years from the beginning before I took it up to a computer trade show and that's where I showed it to Team17.

My philosophy with games is to try and create something which works on lots and lots of levels simultaneously. Worms was a battle with myself to make the game as deep as possible but I also thought of it as a digital playground. Girders for instance I knew would have their uses, but they were actually put in to let people build houses and construct grenade funnels to just mess around with. The high-bounce option on grenades was also for that reason, if you're having fun it doesn't matter whether you are playing the game as intended or not.

For me, games are to have fun with and I love social multiplayer games the most. Get people to take the piss out of each other, to never end, to customise things, to make their personal imprint on the game. The strategy can be there but should never get in the way of the fun, let people discover their own way of playing it in whichever way they want.

I must admit, I spent a lot of weeknights playing Worms 2. Granted, it was almost always against myself, with one of the teams being TEAM17MicroProse (which I always used "Smooth Operator" voice on for one reason or another - kind of a shame that one's not in the more recent releases...) so I could dick around with the rarer weapons instead of playing the game properly, but hell, I had a damn lot of fun with it. I especially loved how you could ramp up pretty much every variable the game used for no reason whatsoever, so you could have miniguns with ludicrous spread, where each "puff" of a bullet hitting a wall or opponent was about as big as a dynamite explosion, tearing the map (and most of your own team) to shreds in one shot. Strategy be damned, this is where I found my fun.

Didn't really play any other games until the XBLA ones hit. Felt a little gypped when I bought the Steam one, only to find out it was the same as the second XBLA one (with new hat!), but I got some fun online play out of it. I believe I bought the Saturn port of the first game somewhere in here (because the copy of Worms United I got in the threepack my copy of Worms 2 came in - Worms Pinball being the third, if you cared - never seemed to run); not sure why, but the port was handled well enough.

Didn't really get to play much of Armageddon, sadly. A roommate lent me a copy to install, but since it was his disc and not mine, and since I've changed computers since then, I no longer have access to that...

Good to hear he's back, and also it's cool to see him here at neogaf.

My respect to you good sir, I have very fond memories of playing Worms 2 and Armageddon in the hotseat with friends and later on consoles. At one particular LAN party it was especially amazing, since after a very long session we crashed on a couch near a gaming area, ordered a pizza and saw an Xbox hooked up that had a ton of games to play, we booted up Worms 3d and have an absolute blast that night.

Still play Worms 2 every now and then :). Very curious about Worms Revolution!
 
But,this game is almost at the end of the development,gonna wait for the next worms game where his influence will be bigger.

Ah, shame, but yeah, fair enough. Team17 wouldn't like that being out in the wild. But please consider releasing it in the many years to come when everyone's retired and the franchise is no more, because I bet it's a fascinating read. It's like a historical document!

I know you weren't 100% satisfied with armageddon, but when me and my friends were playing that game years ago in a boarding school dormitory, it stopped us from punching each other in the face, and let us work out our aggression on tiny creatures instead. Thanks for that :)

It started life as a bet with one of my mates as to who could make a game on a Casio graph-plotting calculator. It was just a simple Artillery clone, random landscape but you couldn't move or anything. I then rewrote it for the Amiga and made them move to see what would happen, and all the strategy started opening up. Put in water for instant kill, and then jumping and being thrown by explosions, and at that point it became a challenge for myself to see how deep I could make what was at its core a simple Artillery game that I'd typed into my C64 all those years ago.

At that point I also decided to not play any other game of that type, to ensure it evolved in its own way. I knew they existed, but I didn't want to know what they'd done to the formula.

lol, it was the opposite for me. That perfectly arced Holy Hand Grenade that sent three worms skipping across the ocean often resulted in a fist fight, but once the dust settled we were still bros. Good times.

All those days of me and my friends spending hours playing Worms on the Mega Drive and Playstation were priceless.

My childhood sincerely thanks you! Looking forward to seeing what you do with T17 in future!
