The PlayStation 4, reportedly codenamed Orbis, may utilize AMD's A8-3850 APU and Radeon HD 7670 GPU, sources have told IGN, offering the combined performance of both integrated and discrete graphics processors.

According to the official product specs, the A8-3850 packs a quad-core 2.9GHz processor with an integrated graphics chip. The APU will work in tandem with the system's dedicated GPU, the HD 7670, a DirectX 11-enabled card clocked to 1GHz with up to 1GB of dedicated VRAM.

I hope it won't be as discrete as the Emotion Engine

I thought 720 did

Maybe they both do? :O

I dunno though. This directly contradicts other things I've heard, and I still don't understand the gains of a design like this. But then again, I am not a system designer.

Can the APU GPU be used for non-graphics work ? If so, it would address one of my concerns, which is to handle natural input while doing heavy graphics work.

Everyone fishing for hits at this time... It's like not too far away from E3, but it's also not too close so they can get away with all the BS.

I like how there were almost zero rumors about the PS4, and after one site publishes a rumor, suddenly everyone knows something about it.

That's a pretty damn awesome setup right there actually. I hope it's true.

It's like Project Cafe/01.net all over again.

That's a crap dedicated GPU, right? Actually not a 7xxx part but just renamed 6xxx.

Also, work in tandem... to do what exactly?

Looks like PS4 and 720 will be quite similar in performance, which is a good thing of course. Those "specs" look outrageous, though.

The HD7670 is the exact same thing as the HD6670 IGN said was in the next Xbox. It's also way weaker than what many people are expecting for the next gen of consoles.

That said, if there's any truth to this at all, these are the specs of the PCs the devs have started development on, not actual console parts.

Isn't this what Kutaragi wanted with PS3?

Yeah, but that was at at time when GPUs were quite different to today. I don't see the gain over one larger GPU?

Also, a 7670+3850 APU wouldn't, on aggregate, be as good as some alternative rumours so I kind of hope this isn't true.

At this point where's the rumor that PS4 is powered by bananas.

Industry reaction:

Carmack: Banana API is too fragmented, it will be a real pain to optimize cross platform games.

Epic: We're excited about this banana based initiative and will have Unreal Engine 4 at E3 running on 8 bananas.

Crytek: It's a real concern that PS4 is built around 8 bananas. Unless we can hit 16 bananas next gen we won't see a real revolution in performance.

Ign making shit up again. Someone should call them out.

I like how they snuck in actual apu and gpu versions.
