Devs to CVG - 'WiiU CPU < PS360'; Nintendo - 'We don't focus on specs'

First, Nintendo of America responded to the GI Biz article being discussed in the other thread.

CVG just posted an independent story/rumor from another two dev sources, who claim that the Wii U will not just be up-rez'd PS360 graphics...because it doesn't have the horsepower to do so.

CVG said:
Sources said graphical quality "won't be a problem" on Nintendo's new console, but a drop in CPU horsepower compared to 360 and PS3 could see Wii U lag behind in areas such as complicated physics and AI.
"Assumptions that Wii U games will look like 'up rezzed' current-gen titles with better textures aren't quite right. They'll look just as good, but not better," one developer told CVG. "You shouldn't expect anything special from a graphics point of view," they added.

A second source working on a big name franchise said GPU and RAM power "won't be a problem" on the new console but, again, claimed Wii U struggles to match PS3 and 360 in processing power.

"We're still working on dev machines but there have definitely been some issues [in porting PS3/360 games]," our source said. "It's not actually a problem getting things up and running because the architecture is pretty conventional, but there are constraints with stuff like physics and AI processing because the hardware isn't quite as capable."

The same source concluded, bluntly: "I suppose you don't need sophisticated physics to make a Mario game."

Either the same two developers mouthing off to multiple members of the media anonymously, or we have 4 devs in the past few days who believe that the Wii U is basically in the same league as the PS3 and 360. How much the tablet controller effects these assessments remains to be seen.

what the point in a Wii U Speculation Thread if no one use it and start new ones every time good or bad unless it 100% fact true

I somehow knew you were going to make this thread after I saw that in the other thread

Wii-U is a Wii HD, in a literal sense, but not any more powerful than even a current gen console

I do like how snarky this appears to come off as, considering how many games the Super Mario Galaxy games were better than while using far less capable hardware.

The constant trickle is leading me to believe that the WiiU in fact will be about on par to the current consoles. I expcted a x .5 difference at least.

So Gearbox lied last year?

Sounds like some random guy no one would recognize who figures he'd get more attention by being anonymous and saying inflammatory shit.

It would be nice if all Wii-u news was kept in the insular community that is the Wii-u Speculation thread. New News, New Thread.

Based on the rumored CPU specs from IBM, this seems very surprising ... at least vs 360.

I wonder if it's more of an SDK issue (scheduling, etc)? Or maybe the code needs to be optimized a bit to take advantage of the eDRAM? Then again ... if the cores are simply clocked too slow, com/memory access no matter how fast isn't going to save you :\

Another thing that seems counter-intuitive is the following:
"Assumptions that Wii U games will look like 'up rezzed' current-gen titles with better textures aren't quite right. They'll look just as good, but not better," one developer told CVG. "You shouldn't expect anything special from a graphics point of view," they added.

While I can understand if the games don't run at a higher display resolution, the increased RAM should most certainly allow for higher resolution textures. That would make the games look 'up rezzed' versus PS3/360 revs of titles.

If the Wii U is technically inferior to PS360 Nintendo would have made the impossible possible: Make a console that's even more outdated than the Wii was at its release.

I'll continue to hope that "anonymous developers" is a code word for "easy way to get clicks", though.

This is just all a clever ruse to get Nintendo to finally reveal something substantial about the Wii-U, to put all our minds at ease.

I get it. Nintendo PR feed the gaming press with WiiU sucks. Then they blow us away at E3.

You don't fool me Iwata.

Joking aside, the gaming press seem determined to undermine the WiiU.

Vague and mysterious, I don't know how to read this.

Nintendo wants to keep every single little detail for the hardware secret? Expect massive amounts of trolling and BS rumors. I hope this shit runs wild and the trolls fill their bellies.

The wait sucks, but this whole thing is just going to spiral right down the toilet. I have no idea how GAF is going to handle this for another 9 weeks or so...
