Basically, I'm hugely interested in browser extensions that augment our experiences with the web. Last summer I wrote a pretty popular extension called Must Stache that will detect faces and apply mustaches to them. (Priceless GAF thread here)

So this weekend I wrote a new extension called "in my words". It lets you maintain a dictionary of words you don't like (for whatever reason; maybe you find certain words or phrases annoying or offensive). Once configured, as you browse the web, these words will be replaced with whatever replacements you choose. I have a few ideas for how I could imagine people getting real use out of it, but I'd like to see how you all see it.

The dictionary of words you want to replace is configured from the extension's options page.

Developers: I really wrote this thing to be an example in test-driven design in JavaScript (I sorta specialize in client-side TDD). If you're interested in learning JavaScript, I'd love if you checked out the tests & source.

I made an extension like this back when the Vita was announced as "NGP." I can't explain why, but that name annoys me, so I just had it replace "NGP" with "PSP2."

On a related note: back in like 2007, I made a small Visual C++ app that would replace certain words in standard, editable Windows text boxes with other words.

The reason I made it was to fuck with my girlfriend's boss at the time. Her boss's boss was named "Roger." So, anytime he typed the word "Roger," it replaced it with "Roger...my man."

I thought it was kinda funny. He didn't. :\

I'm watching it on GitHub and definitely want to get my hands dirty with it. I'm seeing a lot of Ruby / Coffeescript files. I'm fluent in Ruby / JS but haven't really looked into Coffescript. Do you have any recommend resources about it?

It crossed my mind as I was writing it, but it seems like just replacing words and small phrases isn't nearly as bad as our current trend of only reading sites that reinforce our views.

The great thing about CoffeeScript is "it's just JavaScript". Imagine if all the JS you write had the same low-ceremony syntax of Ruby and also passed JSLint, 100%.
