Is there a review embargo for this? I'll be buying on Friday but it would be nice to read some impressions of the final game.

Fantastic OP. Love the minimalist trimmings.

Been looking forward to this game since we first saw it on the 1UP Show, back in 2008, IIRC.

Game looks cool. I'll have to give it a try, despite the controversy.

[EDIT] There is a Nintendo era? o__0

I feel like i'm way in the future looking back at today reminiscing on my long lost Nintendo games.

Thanks a lot for this post. The Metroidvania genre descriptor has always been ill-defined, but it gets applied so loosely nowadays that it's all but lost any semblance of meaning. Being 2D(ish) and non-linear does not make a game a Metroidvania. Metroidvanias rely on the player gradually obtaining new items/abilities and then using those to figure out where to go. It can be distilled into two key components: upgrades and pathfinding. Does Fez have even one of those two? If not, it's not a Metroidvania.

That said, it's looking to be a gorgeous platform-puzzle game, and a definite buy for me.

Seriously, people called Cave Story a Metroidvania. People seem to be attaching the label to any 2D game that isn't explicitly left->right nowadays.

Phil Fish doesn't hate Japanese games, he dislikes MODERN Japanese games. I think he's a big fan of 8-bit and 16-bit era Japanese stuff.

There are still loads of "modern" Japanese games with this very type of aesthetic (both retail and "indie").

After seeing this I can personally say that japanese games have been and will always be a cancer on the game industry's backside and have never contributed to anything good.

This is the first time I ever wanted to have a 360...oh well; in the meantime, while I wait for this to hit Steam, I'll just play Sky Island on Kongregate.

Game looks like it could be very deep. Might have to move the 360 and tv into the bedroom to play this before bed to wear my brain out.

I watched one of the early trailers for this game, and I'm sold. I don't need any more info. Going it almost 100% blind! I'm excited.

why can't we just call it "metroid-like" instead of something that was never meant to be more than a term used to identify a castlevania game that resembles metroid? seriously it makes no sense either way.

Who cares about the opinions of people who work on games, or whether they're assholes or not. All I care about is whether the entertainment value provided by a game is worth the money I spend on it.
I played Shadow Complex, I played Braid, and I will play this.

I'm in for this game. A 3DS version is inevitable, right?

Right?

I'd rather play this than play Crush3d, which has almost the same concept, but with a terrible art style and really bad character concepts

So...someone who hates Japanese games....creates something with a studio Pixel art-style.

And instead of laughing at the absurdity of it, people are boycotting the game?

20 sec of Googling yielded this summary, so I am open to correction if I've misunderstood anything.

Where is your avatar from ?

So you wait for something that may never happen instead of owning a great console with tons of good games, and to sooth yourself you play a Fez ripoff that the creator admits was inspired from Fez?

:lol :lol
