Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

this isn't pleasing enough for you?:
I mean we all want more, but that's not something to scoff at.

That description is interpretive. Do you consider Xbox 1's best games to blow PS2's games "out of the water?"

I don't.

Oh jesus, you're expecting my fragile mind to remember everything in these threads?! Let me think......are we talking about mixed hardware, as in the shaders + TEV 2.0/Magic Lighting Tech (I know it might not be exactly that) scenario?

LOL. Close enough. Since you have an infant I'll let you slide. ;)

But yeah there definitely seems to be something to it after Li Mu Bai's post essentially said the same thing. Summarizing, if the GPU's "extra functions" are not used then the GPU is moderately more powerful than the current gen. If they are used, then the GPU is noticeably more powerful.

I always believe that, mostly because the only argument against that is "But it's Nintendo (and they hate technology or something)".

Or the "Remember how Nintendo fans thought Wii...".

SPEAKING OF WHICH THIS IS INFORMED SPECULATION BASED ON WHAT I HAVE HEARD DEVELOPERS TALKING ABOUT LATELY

DO NOT TAKE THIS AS FACT AND DO NOT START CHICKEN LITTLEING BECAUSE OF THIS POST. EVEN IF EVERYTHING I HAVE HEARD IS 100% ACCURATE, THERE COULD BE REASONS IT WILL NOT HOLD TRUE FOREVER.

I'll say that you should not expect the moon with the Wii U.

Everything I have been told is "best of the current generation by a country mile but not significantly beyond that."

It is the XBox to the PS2. The Gamegear to the Gameboy. The Mad Men Alison Brie to Community's Alison Brie. It'll look better, but generational transition probably won't apply to it.

On the plus side, there will probably be nothing hardware-wise stopping downgraded ports from what people think the new XBox will offer. We're talking, like, Witcher 2 on high settings vs. Witcher 2 on low settings. Same game, same basic idea, different graphics.

But games that do take advantage of the Wii U's hardware are going to blow this current gen out of the water. I am not sure we'll see that at E3 (seriously, think back to nearly every console's launch, most of those titles don't stand up today), but I'm sure we'll see it eventually.

This has been more or less what I'd expected for a while now, so I have no trouble believing this and I'm fine with it... assuming the software is there, from both first and third parties.

It honestly sounds like the PS3 of this generation, except stronger. PS3 ports were worse for the part, but 1st party games that took advantage of the hardware and had good devs behind it blew ALMOST everything out of the water, and that was against the 360 which is basically equal or even better in some ways.

It just goes to show how important the developers are, and Nintendo has a lot of talented ones. If they step up their own output there could be a lot of glorious shit. And if the rare 3rd party chooses to do anything other than the bare minimum, then that's something too.

I do. Nothing on PS2 even comes close to Ninja Gaiden, Doom 3, Conker, or the XBox version of Chaos Theory. With those shader capabilities, it was practically half a generation ahead techwise. There had never been such a stark difference between two consoles of the same gen before that, and not counting Nintendo holding back we'll probably never see anything like it again. If Wii had the XBox's graphics tech combined with Wii's increased horsepower, a lot more people would have been satisfied with Wii's graphics.

I guess we will all enjoy those two or three third party games.

I'm expecting 90% of all third-party games to look like mid-level PS360 titles. Which is good enough for my tastes, personally, but I can already hear the mockery from the peanut gallery with their dainty, delicate, Bambi-like eyes. We'll likely see one or two third-party gems per year on average, and then Nintendo's stuff will look fantastical.. which will be the cue for a chorus of third parties to complain: "we can't compete."

Still, I'm expecting some good things. It's going to be a great generation for Nintendo fans. Watch.

HYPE!

XBox vs PS2 (2.5-3x power difference) was always the best case imo. :/ Well, maybe Wii vs. Vita was the best case...

If by 2010 you mean on-par with a 5870, that was never realistic at any point.

What's a 5870?

I just want a Nintendo system that impresses Morgan Webb.

what was that about again? something to do with mega man legends 3?

Kojima was doing Megaman Legends 3: Subsistence for the Panasonic Jungle, but refused to move the project to a Nintendo platform once the system got canceled. It's now a Nokia Ngage 2 exclusive.

This was what I generally expected. Thanks for sharing this. Now, I noticed that you said, EVEN IF EVERYTHING I HAVE HEARD IS 100% ACCURATE, THERE COULD BE REASONS IT WILL NOT HOLD TRUE FOREVER. With the way you phrased that, is it safe to assume that there is a possibility that the Wii U may perform better than you and other think? I'm asking that because I don't think the Wii U could get weaker as time goes on. ;)

I'm more than fine about the console's power if ShockingAlberto's complete lies are the outright truth.

Nintendo games....with that power....in HD.....with a promising gimmick....not completely lost when the other next generation systems hit....

(was already) Sold.

I don't understand technical mumbo jumbo, but someone told me that more middleware being applied could loosen stress on the processor or something like that.

Oh yes.

I wonder if it'll come with proper connection cables. I remember reading about how the PS3 didn't come with HDMI cables, and had to laaaugh. If it doesn't come with HDMI, I hope that we can at least order them in time for Launch Day.

I'm ok if the Wii U is only slightly more powerful than the PS3 or 360 if it's really cheap ( 200$ ), otherwise I won't be able to justify buying having already a 360 and a PS3, knowing that in a year and a half the PS4 and 720 will probably be released.

You could order them now if you want..

The surprise at E3 is that it will be the first cableless console ever!!!!!!!!!!

So Wii U as next-gen's Dreamcast is a pipe dream, huh? That's what I was hoping for.

Me too.

By a 2010 I meant the kind of console Microsoft would release in November, 2010.

Both the PS3 and 360 still only come packed with red/yellow/white composite cables. I wonder how many people still only use those and never get better cables.

I'm sticking with 2-3 times the power of the 360 and PS3.

Gut feeling.

Not sure where that fits with Alberto's better than current
consoles by a country mile stuff. :)

Or improvement in current engines, API's or middle-ware. For example there is a certain Audio solution that was ported to the Wii U that ended up initially performing worse than current gen HD machines but with the right optimization it actually became a bit faster on the Wii U. I think due to the difference in architecture current middle ware solutions need to be optimized for use on the Wii U.

I would guess Konami's main issue is that they did not want people knowing that Kojima does not answer to them. That has financial ramifications. If the market demands a new Metal Gear Solid from Kojima and he does not want to do it, then they'll look weak and investor confidence could tank.

Well, when they bring everything BUT a Kojima game to WiiU, I'm pretty sure the cat will be out of the fucking bag regardless. But then again, we are talking about Konami, strong business sense doesn't appear to be in their blood anymore.

That's an okay level for my tastes too; and I imagine a lot of other people's as well. The caveat is though, I'm not going to buy a new console for it; and I likewise imagine I'm not alone in this either.

With the way Nintendo touts it being HD and 1080p, it will come with HDMI and the instructions will tell you to use it "for optimal picture and sound". But either way, as stated, HDMI is non-proprietary, so ANY HDMI cable will work.

But I stand by my statement, Nintendo will include an HDMI cable, if only because they're so fucking cheap to produce and include.

Bu-but-but, why would code from 2005/6 machines put stress on a processor designed for release in 2012?

It's HDMI...

Sorry. I thought it would be such that the TV end is regular HDMI and the console end would be some Nintendo-flavored connector (much like the component cables). {and Monsters are a friggin' ripoff!}

In that case, I'm set! Probably have three or four cables in my big box o'connectors in the office..
