As others have said this is the right play. Nothing really jumps out as sounding "Halo" which is good because trying to mimic Marty wouldn't have worked. The chanting in the beginning has a bit of a Bane TDKR vibe.

This needed a montage of gameplay; the stillshots ain't cutting it. I agree about the ending. That sounded more alien than anything I've heard in the series thus far.

Still doesn't do it for me. :(

Oh well, I guess I'll always have the first three. Definitely still interested to see where Halo 4 goes... But I think it won't have the same effect on me Halo 2 and 3 did.

Interesting direction. All the music sounded good, and unusual in its composition (I mean that as a compliment), but not very strong melodies on first watch. Of course, they're just snippets. I'm really looking forward to a longer piece. It's a very different direction for the score, and that's a very good thing. This isn't Marty-lite, it's a whole new ball of wax.

Will the Halo theme return?

yeah glad they didn't just try to get some guy to just copy Marty's work. I don't think I'll miss the monk chanting lol.

Bloody hell, that's the perfect antidote to any of the MP worries I've been having since the reveal.

Gonna be a good game, chaps!

I think what's happening is you're wanting something very similar in vein to the first 3 games, it's changing your whole perception and now that it isn't...well.

Reminds me of the newer Doctor Who slightly. Similar emotions I guess.
Just saw this on Reddit (Halo Reach): http://imgur.com/25Mz4
The comment thread is more interesting:

The stock vectors are from a company called You Work For Them. From what i could find it looks like this pack was created in 2002.
Speaking as an Art Director at a major advertising agency and as a design nerd, I think it sucks to see stock art as major design elements. Especially for video games like Halo that people would uproot lives to design for.

lol come on man you tellin me you didn't get pumped up when incubus started to play in the Arbiter level in Halo 2.. :p
No, and I actually like Incubus (at least up until Murder of Crows).

As to the sample that was just released, sounds good so far. I like that it's very distinct from Marty's work, it will go a very long way to setting a unique tone to the new series. Bring it.

Holy shit, I love Massive Attack! I'm not all the way through the ViDoc yet, but I'm loving the direction they've gone with the music so far. Hype returning.

I loved the synth-y sound of that concept art trailer. I loved ODST and Reach's soundtrack, which were both rather similar. The previous Halo games always had this slightly ethereal, slightly playful feel to it. With all respect for Neil Davidge, hat we have now sounds like a poor man's Hans Zimmer attempting to create a soundtrack for a summer blockbuster. I can appreciate stuff like that from time to time, heck, I love the Transformers soundtracks. I just don't love this.

Maybe it'll grow on me, but as I've said before, everything I've seen of Halo 4 so far hasn't convinced me of that.

I don't see how you could say that. Have either of you listened to Marty's work outside of the game itself? Full of texture.

No, but why should we? We're just comparing the music from the games. In any case, I'm not saying this is necessarily better than Marty's. It is still difficult to top him.

It's gonna be insane come a few days before launch....
I still remember lurking during the launch period of Reach. Everyone's (including my own) hype was through the roof. I remember Sai-kun being one of the first ones with the game and everyone flipping out and amped.

IDK, I like that there's a new sound, and I liked the concept art(and the brief music in the Showcase clip), but this latest clip did nothing for me. Sounds closer to all the other lifeless summer blockbusters out there.

I am sorry dude it is ridiculous to proclaim that a game will be a masterpiece based of a snippet from a new composer vidoc.

Like I said, all the previous Halo games were masterpieces to me (except Halo Wars; and maybe ODST), but the main entries were

The music I've heard so far (and which I'm positive there will be even better in the full game), the concept art telling what sort of things we'll see, the graphics, the premise of the story, insane amount of different talent in the studio, leads me to that conclusion.

Where's Hydra to tell you that you shouldn't jump to conclusions? Or does that only count for negative comments?

I have to agree with Flipyap on that opening actually, the Chief's Helmet looks a bit ridiculous there. The older, simpler helmet would have looked better in that title screen.
The mouth piece seems particularly egregious.
