Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention (PSV) |OT| Play for 10 Million Hours!

Well just a heads-up for everyone in Europe or at least Germany, I think the release date either has been broken universally or shifted forward as just like guggnichso I was able to buy this game last Saturday and every store I was in that carries Vita games has it on the shelves now!

I didn't really have any time to play it so far but from my little peek it looks and sounds absolutely gorgeous on the Vita! :D

And a note for collectors of physical versions, this game comes with absolutely nothing but the game in the box. I know that's not surprising with Vita games but I figured I would mention it.

Funny enough, I checked the online-component on sunday (where u can look how many players there are and how much cumulative time the community has spent on the game).

From those stats, there were 35 players with a cumulative play time of 57 hours.

Now I don't know how local those stats are (meaning if they're only for germany, of for the whole of europe, or for europe and the US combined), but judging from those stats, the early release could be a very local phenomenon.

I see your point, if it's regional I suppose we just live next to each other. Where can I check the community player count? I don't have my Vita at hand right now but I'm curious to check.

There's some flying monster guy next to the chalk board in the hub that lets you view those and several other kinds of stats. He's just there where you arrive when you take the first flight of stairs down into the school at the very beginning of the game after the intro.

Thanks! This is what it says for me, seems to be quite in line with your observations:

I really like SRPGs but I couldn't really get into the first Disgaea. I don't remember if it was the tile color switching or what, something just didn't click with me. Might give this one a shot.

I wish I could want this... I so badly want a new Vita game to play :( But this game is so not my thing, despite trying to convince myself through countless youtube videos. And that trailer in the OP... is the most annoying thing I have seen recently. Usually if I hear both "japanese" and "strategy" and/or "rpg" i come running, but not for this series.

Waiting for Gravity Rush still, I guess :(

Im somewhat in the same boat on this. I downloaded the trailer on the vita and watched it. After about the 15th time I heard the word dood I wanted to shoot myself in the face. Then I watched some gameplay and other various videos and it kinda grew on me. Honestly, I've bought a ton for Vita and Friday is pay day.. I'll cave

I was going to get this digitally since it just kind of made sense. Then I remembered I had like $15 off via NISA's store so eh... :/

Just picked up a copy:

I live in NYC btw.

Decided to call a store just for the hell of it and was surprised to hear they had it. $40. No tax.

Time to put some insane hours into this game.

Just bought this game in the Netherlands! Have to spend about 8 hours in the train this weekend, so I thought I should buy a new psp/vita game. I was so happy to found this one, can't wait to start!

LOL! One of those "Allies killed" was me, testing out this one special that the cleric has. "Heals so much that it hurts".

Yes, indeed it does -.-

Haha, Disgaea humor at its finest! :D Congratz everyone who picked it up, the US boxart looks slightly better than the EU one to me.

This will be one of my first PSV games, along with Good People Die, Gravitiy Daze and ToR: I when I get around to buying a vita. Really enjoyed D4 on the ps 3.

Oh yeah, now this is what I'm talking about.... Between thsi and FFX, when it is finally launched, my VITA is set for a long time. This is perfect for my business trip to NYC in a couple weeks as well. I

Does anyone know if the VITA version will allow mid-game saves, meanign in the middle of maps etc. I used to just close my DS and walk away from it for a long time because I couldn't save in the middle of a map.

Does anyone know where the save games are stored for the boxed version of the game?

Are they on the game card or the memory card?

I was hoping to get the PSN but I'm running a little low on storage space.

Geo-panels really do become a secondary system after awhile, that kind of becomes ingrained into your play style. Most of the time it doesn't even matter unless it's an invincibility, level up, or ATK modifier (which are the real bitches to look out for). But if it didn't grab you in the first 10 or so hours then that's fine, you probably won't get into the recent iterations either. Try Disgaea 2 though- that's where the battle system really peaked for me.

So excited, and my NISA copy has shipped.

Damn you guys that got this early! :p

Congrats though, can't wait to pick up my copy on tuesday, just out of curiousity how does it look on the Vita. I'll probably be fine no matter what, I'm just curious and I hate looking at Screens of Vita games, because they just don't seem to do the games justice while on the OLED.

I'd love to get 4 on Vita tbh, they did alot of really cool stuff with the 4th game imo, and I love the HD sprite work.

I didn't give this one much of a chance on the PS3 so I'm back for the PSV version. I ordered the NIS Online store version for $39.99 with free shipping so I won't be seeing my copy until probably the end of next week but it will be worth the wait. Thanks for the OT!

hmmm... srpgs I've played are a bit jumbled in my head...

I know disgaea tend to have crazy amount of grind... was it chill 'easy grind', or did your brain have to be 200% all the time?

Here's a random screenshot of Disgaea 3:

Disgaea3AbsenceofDetention_1.jpg

The only Disgaea game I've really played was Disgaea 1. Absolutely LOVED that game.

Since I never experienced Disgaea 3, I was pretty damn happy to pick this up..and I am glad I waited till I got it on the Vita.

Been playing for a few hours now and I love it. Jumping from 1 to 3, I noticed how much shit they added. Wow.

I am ready to put in an insane amount of hours/dedication into this game.

This game was one of the reasons I bought a Vita and makes me love this handheld even more. Would love to see Disgaea 4 on it.

Gamespot review is out and they gave it a 7.0:

How does this hold up compared to Disgaea 4? Disgaea strikes me as the sort of series that can easily become dated between iterations.

When I woke up this morning a shipment notification from the NIS Online store was in my email inbox. They've already shipped my copy out!

I wonder if that means that they will be selling the retail copies early? Might be worth checking into.

I would consider it pretty easy. With the past Disgaea games on the psp I would just grind my way through them while watching TV and such

YA know, because of the above, I went around calling all the stores around to see if they had released their copies yet, or to see if NISA removed the street date so it could be sold immediately. Everyone said next week..... not fair.

I don't know what it is, but I absolutely loved the DS version and I can't wait to jump into this one almost everyday for a long long time...

Disgaea 3 -> Disgaea 4 has probably some of the smallest changes mechanically. I don't have D3Vita yet so I can't comment on what was or was not taken but the largest changes (Magichange adjustments, Fusion system) are in D3V. Class World appears to still function as Class World, not Disgaea 4's Chara World (e.g., random spawn events rather than destroying tiles to spawn them) which is a nice plus as well.

The only other standout is the small damage formula change from D3 -> D4; D3 applies all the Skill Damage Multipliers on your Offensive Stat before the defense check (which is really just Offensive Stat - Defensive Stat). I'd imagine this wasn't changed but can't say for certain.

Besides that, I guess Disgaea 4's multiplayer stuff may not have been used. Don't know, actually. I kind of hope not so I don't end up making a perfect unit to put up for sharing and get flooded with friend requests again :x But I'll do it if it's an option, I guess.

As Durante mentioned, you'll never have to grind for the main game. It's really just post-game stuff for the grind and, really, not even that much for some of it. It's the post-post game of "I want to get the biggest and bestest everything" and the Land of Carnage that sort of get into that grinding forever thing. And it's more on the menial task kind of thing rather than focusing much.

True true, but that's where it's all at! the story is only like 20-40 hrs of the million hours.

Also D4 had that easy duping exploit which made the post-game a lot less grindy.

Well, that wasn't intentional so I don't know if we can count it :x Disgaea 4 also introduced the infinite killing of Item Bosses, though that would also seem to be an introduced bug and not an intended feature. At least, as far as I can tell based off the change that caused it, anyway.

Assuming the don't mess with it, Disgaea 3's Puppy Paw Stick for duping is a lot better than Disgaea 4's. More common dropout rate vs Heart Cons. (and less work to spawn them) and double the chance.

I missed out on this; I think after the trophy patch the success rate got gimped hard. Here's hoping it survives in the vita version. The psp version of Disgaea 1 really spoiled me due to the statistician exploit, saved me so many hours of grinding.

That's nice to hear regarding the Puppsy Paw Stick in D3 being more workable than the D4 one.

They never changed the rate as far as I know, it was just that there was a brief window of Disgaea 3 where you got a Class Dropout on every floor rather than having to deal with them spawning. It basically meant you just had the PPS' 20% proc rate to deal with rather than PPS proc rate and Dropout spawn rate.

20% chance vs 10% chance and you don't even have to do anything for the Dropouts to spawn! Hooray! :x

Edit: That said, I don't know if D3V adjusts it or not so don't get that happy yet. I don't get my copy until whenever NISA ships it out so I don't know the exact changes in store.

I see. I haven't played D3 in ages. I was able to solo D1 with an overleveled ninja, but the same tactic failed horribly in D3. Any tips on how to start a new game properly? I recall that jumping height was tied to Mao's level?

Well... I caved. Decided to order it just for the hell of it. Hope I like it!

Just seconds after I order it and amazon.com already says it is 'shipping soon' -- good timing on my part I guess, since it is release date shipping.

I think GS opens at 10, I'll be there to pick this up and spend my lunch hour playing it, I hope I can actually get some sleep tomorrow night, lol.
