Halo |OT3| Remember Reach?

Woke up and saw whatever the fuck 343 is trying to pass off as a grunt. All I have to say is that is just pathetically awful. Just awful awful awful.

Meh, im actually okay with it, I like their new more vicious look. It'll make it all the more hilarious if they end up giving them some gag lines with a skull.

The claw hands are very different to the traditional Elites.

The point I was trying to make I guess is that although these two particular styles of covenant seemed to have invoked a strong Gears comparison, previous screens of the Halo 4 Grunts and Elites did not. The phrasing of your posts seemed to indicate that you saw it as a negative thing that they strongly reminded you of the Locust.

Visual changes in character design don't really bother me at this point. Bungie set the tradition of making aesthetic alterations to characters/vehicles/scenery in pretty much every game.

I for one actually like the new grunts/elites it adds to the back story of them being a militia separate from the Covenant armada, think "covenant pirates".

And a sucky tradition it is. We've past the stage in graphics development where every new iteration practically required a redesign because of the enhanced capabilities.

How about some basic continuity? Good design doesn't become outdated.

From Waypoint:

I don't normally post new threads, but whatever. Haven't really seen this info around today, which is strange. Kind of expected info from that OXM magazine to be spewed all over these forums today but all I've seen are some new high res screenshots from Famitsu...

Anyways, I just got my copy of Dutch gaming magazine Power Unlimited and they've got some little pieces of info we might not have seen/heard before. (And it it has been told here today...well, I'm not going to read through the first 3 pages of these forums ;))

- Jackals are confirmed (no big suprise) and described as having a face that resembles "an evil crossbreed between a shark and an iguana"...expect loads of nasty teeth I guess?

- Returning Covies in general are described as "fitting a survival-horror game as well". Again: not a big suprise.

- The UNSC Infinity will show up during the Campaign (guess we all expected that)

- Matchmaking area of Infinity will be called "War Games"

- BR is being described as "single shot" and DMR as "burst"....which is more than likely a mistake....Should be the other way around of course

- Author states the multiplayer feels "f---ng amazing!", after saying he didn't really like Reach that much.

- "Perks" seem to be called "Modifications". Example given is that the author could carry (a few) more grenade(s).

- Plasma Rifle has been replaced with what he personally calls the "Covenant Assault Rifle" which spews "a storm of blue balls", and is described as "incredibly awesome".
Which sounds like the Plasma Repeater in a better form of sorts to me.

- He states the classic "chanting monks" tune WILL in fact be back, after rumours on these forums being concerned it wouldn't return.

The the new gun we saw on the OXM tease:
It does in fact look like a UNSC-Forerunner hybrid with the layout of the Covenant Plasma Repeater.
It also shows the full picture of that gun, as seen -snip-

All in all no great shocks or completely new things. Just some little details that sounded new to me at least. Like the War Games, Plasma Rifle replacement and a tiny little insight in the Modifications.

I like what I'm seeing, though the Grunt pics seem like their signature hump on their back has been de-emphasized, so their profile doesn't retain the familiar shape (their head was usually well below the top of the methane tank). Edit: just saw the second pic, which is better.

Other than that, it's all looking great. moar moar MOAR

I'm liking the sounds of they guy saying it felt amazing, got me hyped a bit. But like Robertson said before, grenade carry limit can be increased with a modification, grenades power need to be lowered from Reach.

I'm happy to hear that the monk chant is back, I'll never get tired of that.

WTF is this shit??!????

Why did they do this? They should have just added the temporary slow back into the Plasma Rifle. I'm so mad. I've been hoping ever since Halo2 that the slow would be put back into the plasma weapons to make them somewhat useful again. Shame. Would have been an awesome counter weapon in close quarters combat.

Imagine having low health and encountering an enemy around a corner in a small room. You pull your plasma rifle and temporarily slow them while taking their shield out. Pull your Pistol out and headshot them for the cheese. I would have loved to see this.

Also, goddamnit. If you hit someone with a plasma pistol charge it should knock them out of sprint/their armor ability. JUST SAYIN

Grenades are not nukes. There will be male choral pieces influenced heavily by prior games. The exact monk chant? Not so much.

God, the grunts look terrible. Ugh.

Whoever I was talking about it with:
Looks like it was as I guessed, 3 years since they lost contact, not 5.

Edit: Actually I think I'm remembering this backwards. He was saying it looked like 3, but I was arguing it should be 5.
Watch this interview. Kiki says pretty plainly that it's 5. (30 seconds in)

That pic definitely looks like a 3 - probably not counting from the end of Halo 3. :) (It mentions 'lost contact' - but you have no idea from what.)

Also, just to point out, the Heretic Grunts also had exposed mouths:

Wow, what a perfect 'Haters gonna hate' image that would make. :)

I think the Grunts look good. It's nice to have the odd design shake-up every now and then and considering we've been fighting Covenant for the last 11 years, a little bit of change is a good thing IMO.

Don't think I can link the image, but in the Halo 4 GameInformer, there's an image of a Grunt that appears to have the signature breathing mask that Grunts have had before.

Let me cash in my Spartan Credits from Reach for Spartan Points in H4. Figure out the conversion rate. Will get more kids playing Reach TODAY.

"Hey kids! Make sure you're still racking up those credits in Halo: Reach because once Halo 4 is released, you'll be able to cash those in for some sweet Spartan Points to spend at your leisure!"

that+microtransactions (storywise your spartan will be the heir of fortunous family)

no fucking way.
Legacy players have waypoint to take care of thanking them.
There will be unlockable stuff for old timers

I got used to the Reach nades (they don't make me rage anymore), but I'm happy to hear the H3 nades are back.

Nades seem to have a slightly larger radius, but the biggest effect is that it totally discombobulates your screen by shaking it all over. In Halo 3, you could take a full grenade and it wouldn't disrupt your aim.

I don't mind it actually, maybe a little less screen shake would be nice.

Those hires images are so beautiful. I loved how the RvB action look on Wrap. And that campaign first person screen, NOMNOM atmosphere. It's been a while since an upcoming game truly impressed me visually (console gamer), extra cool that it's a new fuckin Halo of all games. DMR looks great, and that red Elite looks cool, I hope he moves superfast and agile like those enemies from Reach (forgot the name, the ones related to the jackals).

UUUUNNNGGHHHH

I want to gently caress your bald head right now.

edit- Since you talked about grenades, can you please confirm if the rocket has also been toned down a bit from Reach? It should not be THAT easy to get kills with it.

I know him from the time I still posted on the Power Unlimited forums. Dude is the biggest Halo fanboy in the world and probably is the leader of the Bungie Defence Force.

Yeah, I saw you guys over there in the comment section a lot. Never got used to the weird forum system on PU though so I never really posted there.
