Guild Wars 2 public Beta is here for pre-purchases! [Stress Test June 27th]

Huh. This is the kind of shit that leaves people disappointed when they realize that no MMO will ever live up to this kind of hype.

There's always going to be two sides...some will love it, others will hate it. Scan your battlefield, be aware of what's going on around you, learn to switch weapons.

Is the 3rd podcast only available for download or will it find its way onto youtube/wherever as well? :) I'm looking forward to listening to it! ;) Won't be joining you guys for the Public Beta event, but I'm looking forward to an endless supply of screenshots, videos and impressions :x

I'm worried that it wont fulfill my expectations. I believe that I will like the combat when there are few people but playing with a ton of people in an event is going to get tedious to bring down a monster to 0 health. Hopefully I'm wrong. Female Guardian with a troll name here I come!

There aren't many situations where you're just fighting one guy with a ton of health. They usually throw other things at you or give you other objectives to do at the same time.

I'll be looking forward to detailed impressions. I'm not at all comfortable paying the full cost into this game to get access to this beta yet. I always try to get into MMO betas so I can give them a shot before I have to pay, to see if it's my thing or not. Sad that I won't get an opportunity with this one, but good that lots of people will play and won't be under NDA so burning questions can still be addressed.

If you want impressions then check out mine. The content from this beta and the last should be the same so they should be fairly consistent.

That really only applies to big bosses and such. Think of it like this.

1 person going up against the boss and it'll have 100 health
10 people and the boss has 1000 health

It's still the same amount of time as if it were just you killing it, but there's just more people there and the time it takes doesn't increase. It merely scales so that everyone gets an equal challenge out of it and the bosses can gain new skills to help kill the extra people. Then for your normal mobs they don't gain extra HP or anything, the game takes into account the people participating nearby and spawns more when a new wave comes so it gives everyone an equal amount of mobs to kill or items to collect or whatever. It's all equal due to scaling.

If you're doing an event alone and say like you're defending a town. Let's say there's 2 mobs attacking per wave, well if another person comes in the next wave might have 4 because there's 2 of you and then an other person might be 6 or 8. It merely gives everyone something to do, but takes no more time as long as everyone is actively participating, otherwise it scales back down in the next wave. There's also events you'll run into that have multiple objectives that all count towards the same goal so you can pick and choose what you want to do. If an objective is related to picking up items or something, to fill the bar it might take 5 for you to do alone, another person might bump that to 10 and so on, but if people are actively participating and bringing in one item at the same rate you'll fill up that 10 item requirement just as fast as you would 5 by yourself.

I know the gaf guild is going up and we can make our characters but aren't they wiping everything from the BWE's for release?

Still waiting and still pre-purchased :D

Not really going to play much of the beta for future BWE (gonna save it for launch! :D). If i do it will to be to focus on crafting and understanding it, or exploring the towns a bit more than i was able to.

Even the installer looks sexy as hell. Too bad they don't give out Game of the Year awards for best art design, GW2 would win it easily.

It screams confidence.

They've spent years talking the talk (and showing the... video-ing...? whatever), and now when it's time to walk the walk, they're pulling out all the stops and letting players record, screencap, blog, whatever.

In ArenaNet We Trust.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but people who registered for Beta Access way back in March should still be eligible for all of these BWEs, right?

I prepurchased / entered the code / got confirmation email on April 12th, but I haven't yet received any subsequent email telling me how/where to get the game client for beta access.

The beauty of GW2 is that there's always lots you can do. If you're in a Renown region or doing a dynamic event and it gets a little too crowded, you can always go somewhere else and take part in another event or region.
Or switch to WvW.
Or Competitive PVP.
Or go back to a zone you already completed to get Karma
Or gather crafting materials (we've seen that Cooking at least will use low level materials in high level recipes so having them around is always good).
Or do your personal storyline.
Or help a friend out with theirs to see how different plots play out.
Or just go to a different zone, there seems to be quite a bit of overlap in terms of levels, at least early on.

I know the gaf guild is going up and we can make our characters but aren't they wiping everything from the BWE's for release?

You still get to play the game, and we have heard rumors (JUST RUMORS, mind you) that they might preserve our characters between BWEs. Take that with a ton of salt though, pretty sure the guy who posted that was trollin' hard.

PLEASE post how it is, there's not much information/videos on that online that I can find :/

I'll do my best when the NDA is up and BWE start :)

Gathering is pretty simple and non frustrating. (not having to fight others for resource spawns) which has been mentioned by other sites.

So I guess I'll have to just read every article they've written, yes? :D (And I fully expect you to say "yes, you have to, and the donation button is in the top right!") and thanks ;)

Nah, a lot of them aren't even about Guild Wars 2. But they've been following the game forever (it was one of the first sites that really fueled my hype), so there's a long history of articles to draw from. So if you have questions, chances are they've written at least a little something about it. As people ask, if I remember a specific article (and no, I don't have them memorized) I'll link it.

ArenaNet's Official GW2 wiki is really informative too:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page

My only complaint with the Wiki is that it isn't updated consistently, leaving a lot of misinformation that's difficult to sort through. So while the Wiki is a great resource, it has it's flaws. Just sayin'

That reminds me though, since we're in a new thread, here's the link to the Skill/Traits tool: http://gw2.luna-atra.fr/skills_tool/?lang=en
People can start getting an idea how the professions will work, but remember that the content is content is subject to change.

If Guild Wars 2 is even an iota better than Guild Wars then I know I'll love it. Going to be playing all Friday/Saturday so hopefully my computer doesn't fail before then.

I like this site better for some reason (more responsive, tell you whether the skill is a field/finisher combo, easier on the eye) : http://www.gw2tools.com/skills#

I beg to differ sir, that wiki is updated within the day of new info releasing. At times some edits take a couple days because the community likes to make good presentation and that takes a bit of coding. An example would be when they put out the blog for the Traits, all relevant pages were updated within 15 min. I should know because I do editing on there myself.

The Cryptarch's Bane
I've been replaying GW (Nightfall and Factions) a lot, and it's great, but there are a lot of respects in which it feels totally dated now after seeing videos of GW2. For one really basic example, in Guild Wars 2 you can fucking jump. Guild Wars is full of invisible railings, walls, and objects that can't be climbed. Guild Wars 2 has jumping puzzles in it. Seriously.

Thanks for the answers.

I was mostly wondering just to skip a bit through the character creation and head to the game since that character will most likely get deleted anyways and I won't have much time that weekend.

Unless there's a way to somehow save the character but I don't think I've ever seen that mentioned.

Did they mention if character names will be saved? Or should I make character names I want in GW1 now just to be sure? Going to make them anyways just to be sure.

Thanks again.

The Cryptarch's Bane
I don't doubt that.

Everything I've seen pretty much makes it impossible for me to dislike this game.

Planning on making a Thief for my main character when the game comes out. But for the beta I want to try all the classes.
Me too..

What race?

Actually, considering that what you're starting in the game world depends on what your first character's race is... who's going to be chilling with me in Rata Sum at the very beginning?

Yeah, next weekend is going to be crazy. I'm glad I have a wife who will (try to) prevent me from doing stupid things, like making homemade Redbull from Kerosene.

I like sleeping. I just like Guild Wars 2 more.

I like this site better for some reason (more responsive): http://www.gw2tools.com/skills#

Some of the Ranger stuff when I looked at it earlier this week was way off and they're missing info on the Charzooka. Criminal.

As for the gw2tools site, their layout is all over the place for Engineer and Elementalist skills for conjured items /toolkits, while the Luna site lets you just pick them from the drop down menu for easier viewing. It also was slower to update after the Press Beta too.

Did they mention if character names will be saved? Or should I make character names I want in GW1 now just to be sure? Going to make them anyways just to be sure.

Your best bet is to hop on GW1 account and reserve any names you want now... assuming you linked it to your GW2 account when you registered. If not they'll let you do it before launch, I'm sure.

Planning on going as a human. Since you can dye armor colour in this, I had the idea of finding armor that looks like the Assassin's Creed garb and dying it white.

I think that would go pretty well with the Thief class.

What?

It looks very organized on GW2tools located neatly at the bottom, whereas Luna doesn't even list the conjure skills/kits. (as far as i know)

The only thing I like Luna over GW2Tools is the aquatic skill and downed skill, otherwise I prefer GW2tools.

The luna skill calculator is missing the Charzooka too though.. along with all other race elite skills :(

They're listed under the actual weapon selection.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Edit:Looking at your screenshot and checking it out now, it looks like they've improved the layout a bit from the last time I looked at it. Much better than I remembered.

Both of the skill calculators are, unless something is up with my browser.

Looking at the Thief elite skill Basilisk Venom, it says the duration is 45 seconds. Does that mean that the target is turned to stone for 45 seconds? That seems like a pretty long time.

Since the description reads "Your next attack turns your foe to stone.", I think it means that you have 45 seconds to deliver the attack before the venom wears off.

I think that's how long you've got the poison applied to your blades.

But that's just a guess.

I don't doubt it is, but I don't think you can make definitive statements like that until a fair amount of time has passed after launch :p
Well, that's true, but in some ways you can. It's clearly a better game in certain areas by a huge margin (graphics, control, world persistence).

According to luna site, the stone duration is 1 sec, so yeah both sites are good :p

At this point, with the Beta less than a week away, tinkering around with skill tools feels like a looking at porn a week before your girlfriend gets back in town....after 5 years.

Bad analogy, if you're girlfriend was really gone for 5 years you'd be looking at porn every day anyway. It'd be more like STOPPING to watch porn before she gets back.
