The new iPad |OT|

Isn't that what Apple's review team is supposed to protect against? They couldn't see that TV English Premium was charging for access to channels that the app likely didn't have the rights to?

I don't know, perhaps they did have something initially. It just seems like the switch after the fact would be hard to gauge for anyone really.

That Ultrathin Logitech keyboard case is very desirable. Before I purchase, does anyone know of any keyboard case that has a hinge so it can mount the iPad and open it like a laptop, similar to the Asus Transformer?

Speaking of cases, I'm still having a tough time finding one I'm really happy with. I can't believe I'm saying it, but I'm starting to think some sort of Smart Cover combo is my best option.

I'm trying to find a case that's:

- light, doesn't add much weight or bulk
- good material on the back, something easy to grip. Part of the reason I don't go without a case is because the metal back is too slippery for me, and I don't like the feel of it.

First case I got was the Targus Vuscape. Most people probably have these, as it seems like it was the most readily available at launch.

It's a decent case actually. But just not the combination I was wanting.

Pros:
- comfortable to hold
- folds into stand really easily
- good protection all the way around

Cons:
- adds more weight/bulk than I'd like
- already getting a little freyed around the edges/stitching
- stupid cutout in the back for the apple logo

I thought maybe I'd just go with a shell back for it, something like a phone case. I got a Belkin snap on shell, but didn't like it at all. Sure it was obviously light and didn't add much to the ipad at all, but it was uncomfortable as hell to hold because of how it met the edge of the ipad. Really kind of cut into the palms.

So then, someone here mentioned the STM Grip case. I looked it up and ordered it, got it today. Been using it most of the night. Looks like this, in black:

Here's a Youtube video on it:

And this was oh so fucking close to what I'm looking for. It's pretty thin and lightweight, so it doesn't add much bulk. The outer material is a hard case but it's got that rubber like texture with the ridges you see in the pic so it feels solid and not slippery. Snaps in easily, very secure.

BUT,
- because that front flap is basically a hard sheet of plastic, it's not very comfortable to hold. With that flap folded back around book style it's cutting right into the palms.
- The stand. It's actually snapped into the back plate of the case so it's stored away but it's a pain to snap back out.
- Also, because the stand is so skinny, the whole thing kind of wobbles really easily when used. Kind of annoying.

STM has another one called the 'Skinny' that looks more like a cloth one without the clip stand, so I may try it out.

>: the search continues....

I got a "no sim card" error tonight. Rebooting seemed to help. Has anyone encountered this problem? Should I take it- and as I'm typing this, I get the error again. Guess I'll be visiting the Apple store tomorrow...

Seems like finding proper protection is the hardest thing about an iPad. I'm torn between that Moko case and a slip cover/Smart Cover combo.

Is there a consensus best remote desktop/vnc client for ipad?
Splashtop user myself, their trackpad mode is excellent and it also pulls sound through the iPad speakers. I play Eve Online through it quite frequently.

Screens is another nice contender I hear, doesn't work for me though since I have a 2009 unsupported MBP.

What kind of framerates do you get when playing games through Splashtop? I keep seeing people reference playing games through this client which isn't even remotely acceptable on other solutions I've seen to date.

Do you actually get reasonable latency/framerate with Splashtop or is it more that in games like EVE or WoW you don't necessarily need pinpoint timing to really get the job done?

...then again I don't know why I really care about this anymore since I just sold my MBP to prevent me from buying Diablo III :lol

Frame rate has ranged from unbearable to playable depending on what you're doing (guessing here but I think it's a 30fps video feed at best). I'm mostly using it while on wifi outdoors and I have a really solid connection at home so I get good use out of it. It definitely gears more towards casual play though, I'd never do any serious EVE fleet engagement on this thing, or a Hell run in Diablo.

Anything else than a WiFi connection doesn't make sense for Splashtop. I've tried it over the web and it's pretty much unusable. At home it works good enough to play some Persona 4 (turn-based JRPG). I just wish the Windows 8 version was part of the regular version. Such a rip-off to charge another 20 for that version.

Ended up getting the Moko...I just need something, anything because my trip next week so I wanted some protection. If it sucks I'll get a different case at some point.

This has probably been answered but it's a big thread.

My moko came from maroo and although it's a lovely case and the sleep function works the box it came in was full of stickers covering up bits saying for iPad 2 an it has the old logo

Have I even sent an old one?

Nope. Their iPad 2 case works with the iPad 3, so they just stuck new stickers on the old boxes.

Welcome to iOS.

Where your cache bloats to 2 gigs, and you can't do anything about it outside of formatting your device and start from scratch.

I'm starting to regret my New Ipad purchase. The screen is amazing, but performance suffers in many of the apps as they have been upgraded to use the new resolution. I'm not so sure that the new ipad can push things at the new resolution as fast as the ipad2 could push things at its native resolution. The fact that you can't "choose" which ipad model iteration of an ipad app to use means you could end up with WORSE performance after you upgrade your app to the latest "retina" version.

Then comes the battery life. I could get well over 10 hours of use on my ipad2 playing videos with Azul. With the ipad3, now I'm losing 10% battery life per 40 minute episode of television. I guess that's due to how much more power is required in the backlight to get it past the greater transistor density.

I bought the hype for the new screen, but I think performance-wise, the new processor/RAM isn't capable of the same "per pixel" power as the Ipad2, and after hearing about the beefed up battery life, I didn't expect worse real-life usage.

But that screen!! Gorgeous! Too bad it's really all I enjoy about it.

Apps will automatically "clean" their caches periodically when disk space runs low, which is a pretty shitty solution.

im in the same boat as you man. it takes 2-3 seconds per page to read a pdf magazine in ibooks. it was a lot faster on the ipad2. not to mention viewing large photos in my camera roll takes 2-3 seconds as well before they're viewable.

wtf?

How do you play a game via splashtop without a mouse+keyboard?
Trackpad mode makes the entire screen act as a mouse trackpad which mimics 1:1 cursor movements + taps for clicking so playing EVE and other such mouse/tap driven games work out well. It also has a robust/quick built in keyboardor as I do, use a BT keyboard case linked to the iPad.

What is this, apps are using too much data and there is no way to delete the data or the cache

Dont those apps have in-app measures to clear it out? Most games (save games) and apps do (IAP magazines etc.).

AppleCare+ if you don't care too much about minor cosmetic stuff. And then if it gets bad enough (but not bad enough for a replacement) run over the iPad with a car/play frisbee with it/etc and exchange it for the $50 deductible or whatever.

So I'm taking my iPad on its first extended trip and I was wondering, can GAF recommend me any good media/video apps that can take subs, xvid, x264, mkv and avi?

You guys just using any basic microfiber cloth for wiping the screen? I'm currently using a sunglasses wipe but I think the spray, which I am not using on the ipad, has soaked into the wipe over the years. Makes the screen shiny and clear, but my fingers stick a bit until its dirty again
