Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

We've heard rumblings that it's at least 1 tflop. Take that with a HUGE grain of salt though.

Those are very old rumblings which turn out to have been borne originally from speculation and a bad translation. There are still logical reasons why 1.1 GFLOPS would be a really good target to pursue (it'd be able to run that famous Samaritan demo at 720p at that point, essentially).

I want to believe that it is still possible.

edit: lol, made the same mistake

Supercomputing next gen consoles confirmed!

I think you meant giga, not tera. :)

Actually you are lowballing the PS4/720. They'll be higher.

But the Wii U GPU is still up for debate, but is a primary factor in determining the gap. The problem with accurately calculating this for Wii U is going to be due to Nintendo modifications. It is plausible in my opinion that these mods could easily double the performance over it's standard usage.

Yeah my bad sorry, i ment giga lol :p.

I hope the rumour about the base GPU chip being a custom Radeon 4770 is true, what Nintendo developers could do with that GPU with some modifications, a decent CPU and 2 GB's of Ram could be truly astounding.

Every first party game looking like the Zelda tech demo running at 720p / 60 fps while also running the tablet at 480p :).

I mentioned awhile back from a discussion with Alstrong that Wii U could run a "pseudo-Samaritan"-level game at 720p. It's not like people would be able to tell the exact difference(s) anyway.

I think my particular line of logic at the time was that hitting that mark might have been the specifically required performance minimum for certain levels of Epic support.

tadaaaaam

the guess is strong in this one

oh and i see that a google employee may have just confirmed in a way my info about the software layer/os features of wii u !

btw, i need to sleep, it's late here !

Oh, it's not guessing.
Just educated observations. :p

Well I wouldn't get hung up on it being any kind of custom R700. The GPU was completed as late as January though late December is possibly more likely. About the only thing the GPU might have in common with an R700 would be ALU count and maybe being VLIW5.

And honestly in regard to the Zelda demo, any 1st party game that pursues that graphical direction (e.g. pursuing that level of IQ) should easily pass that. While I could nitpick a few things about the demo I remind myself that demo was made in a short amount of time, on early, unfinished hardware using Gamecube assets. :)

Ugh, Denise Kegler was soooo boring and stuck to her PR scripts like a drone, her IGN Q&As were pointless. Cammie was bad for E3 but at least her interviews were interesting.

The IGN Q&A was boring, but she was pretty good at what she did. Watch the Gametrailers interview from E3 '09. She handled Geoff Keighley amazingly.

Right, but when I talk about pseudo-Samaritan, I'm referring to Epic making some concessions on their end as well like changing from MSAA to FXAA which would make it much more tolerable for consoles and gamers in general would be none the wiser. Samaritan as it originally was wouldn't cut it on PS4 or Xbox 3 unless it ran at 720p. Epic's "adjustments" makes it a lot more believable a game at that level could run at 1080p/30 on PS4/Xbox 3 and 720p/30 for Wii U.

If any game on Wii U even approaches that Zelda demo then i will be more than happy, regardless of the hardware inside or what PS4 / 720 can offer.

I think a lot of people underestimate Nintendo's artists, some people were not impressed with that demo but i was blown away by it.

Imagining a 3D Mario game, Metroid, Pikmin, Mario Kart, F Zero, Starfox, Smash Bros, Donkey Kong ect looking like that sends me into geek heaven lol.

I'm not being greedy regarding the GPU i just want it to be able to compete next gen, unlike Wii this one.

Cheers for the info mate ! :).

you mean the rushed zelda demo using old assets. lol, you don't gotta worry man.

Sounds like im in for a real treat :).

I can't imagine Link looking any better than that tbh !.

I think it is because for Nintendo this console will be more of a two gen leap than one (considering Wii was a slightly more powerful Gamecube).

I would love a pill right now that would send me to sleep and i would wake up on the morning of the Nintendo E3 event haha ;).

Do you guys expect Sony and MS to sneak a trailer of PS4 / 720 tech demo's, games in to their events right at the end just to take the wind out of Nintendo's sails ?.

If i was the head of Sony or MS i would not want Nintendo possibly claiming all the next gen customers a year before i launched, i would want to plant a major seed of doubt in their head and i think they will by maybe saying 'and here is what we are working on for 2013'...

If MS or Sony showed next gen footage at E3, it would cannibalize their own current hardware sales.

In regard to the bold, you might have missed a couple of posts I made a few days ago about that.

But as always I continue to say that anyone that wants a Wii U will be happy with their purchase. And you should be able to own only one console if you choose to. I say should but that doesn't factor into dev/pub decisions. But it shouldn't miss out due to power.

Isn't this Cynthia Gordon chick working at Nintendo now?

Oh yeah, forgot about her, will be interesting to see how she does.

Which is exactly why we could go through two more of these. There will be little drips of info the closer we get, each tidbit resulting in 5-10 new pages, not to mention any new threads that will be started with bigger news.

I think at most we'll get a minor game reveal and a bunch of people saying "I know something...be excited!"

That's really not out of the realm of possibility for a Nintendo title, or even an HD engine. It'll be interesting to see if they build a totally ground up tool set and engine for HD development. But don't be surprised to see a lot of recycling early next gen.

Iconic sound and musical cues, will be around for a long long time

I would admire the hell outta them if they created all new of those

How many casual gamers buying the 360 for Kinect and PS3 as a family Blu Ray player would actually buy a PS4 / 720 at launch tho ?.

I think the Blu Ray factor will be big for Sony next gen, just as many people bought a PS3 to have a Blu Ray player as bought a Wii for Wii Sports only imo.

It will be very hard for them to get people to upgrade now that they already have a Blu Ray player, esp if what is being reported is true about PS4 now not being as big a leap as PS3 was over PS2.

Personally, even though I'm well aware it's probably overly optimistic, I'm crossing my fingers for 1.5 TFLOPs or equivalent. Basically the idea here is that even if Sony or MS go all out there's no way in hell they'll manage to clear double that. There wouldn't be any reasonable excuse at that point for stuff to not get ported.

In game video chat would be a KILLER feature if they pull it off. Especially if it streams 4 or so video feeds simultaneously.

I've long thought in-game video chat is going to be a big feature for Wii U online. The shitty version they implemented in StarFox64 3D is the template. Wii U's online is (imo) going to be about capturing the social aspect of local multiplayer and pushing it to the online space.

Mainly I just hope the animation work will carry over into the final game more than anything, the demo flowed really well. So I just hope that gets preserved or made even better.

Personally that would be amazing on so many fronts.

Skiesofwonder

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
Twenty years from now, we'll all be clamoring for a modern sequel. See, StarTropics; see also, Kid Icarus.

Personally I'm clamoring for one now. The core gamplay/controls could be fleshed out to make a rather great game IMO. Even a EShop sequel would be nice, but the chances of seeing anything new from that franchise are probably zero to... Zero. :(

Nintendo to buy Twitch.tv
That would be something I'd love. There are some days when I don't quite want to play, but I still want to consume video gaming content.. and sometimes I'm not in the mood for a podcast.
Either that, or I watch a live broadcast when I'm considering a game but want to know more about it.

That is way beyond just optimistic. 6.25x 360 on paper is completely out of the question. Even half that is pushing it a bit.

I got it. Nintendo will have tournaments they host, and allow you to watch through your wii u. Winner gets a free taco from josh freeman's kentucky fried taco bell
