Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (Saturn title but w/ full voice) announced for 3DS

Meguro composed the original, or he was one of the composers at any rate, so I'd expect switchable soundtracks

Hopefully. Didn't he do the music in Persona 1 and 2? Because those arranged pieces SUCK. Especially the jpop in Persona 1. That one had no option to change the music. :(

This is a very exciting announcement for me as I have always wanted to play this game in English (and I am assuming that I will be able to in the future *ahem*) but I do long for the day when an actual new SMT game will be announced. And I include Persona 5 in that wish.

New home console content from Atlus is a rare thing. Catherine last year. Ultimate in Mayonaka this year (sort of qualifies as new) and maybe ???? in late 2012 or 2013? One can only hope.

Persona 1 had many composers, and Meguro didn't compose Persona 2 at all (he was responsible for the arranged tracks tho.)

Soul Hackers was him, Tsukasa Masuko, & Toshiko Tasaki

And I'm split on the original Persona's soundtrack. Both original and remixed have a lot of duds.

I was disappointed that like 3/4ths of the songs from the original P1 were straight removed from the PSP version, like the awesome ambient pre-demon invasion hospital theme. It ended up changing the tone of a lot of scenes (Maki doubling over in pain at the hospital went from having a creepy and foreboding sound to the high energy remix of Reiji's theme)...

And the remix of Deva Yuga is a travesty.

I think that I must be the only person who genuinely liked the Persona PSP remake's soundtrack. Don't get me wrong, not being able to switch to the original is disappointing, but I enjoyed the new tracks quite a bit.

On topic: I will buy a 3DS for this.

Atlus simply didn't have a good home this generation. I don't know if things will be better next (well, this now that 3DS and Vita are out) generation, but I do know that Atlus has some exciting things in the works, so we'll see what happens.

:O

It better be a new SMT game, a new Trauma Center or a new Growlanser.

Well, I too enjoyed some of the new music (yes, even the jpop... I much prefer the new standard battle theme over the classic) but not at the exclusion of Persona 1 classic's good songs like Battle ~ Awakening and Battle ~ Mid-boss. And Deva Yuga, that shit was awesome hearing it in-game for the first time.

I agree. It just kind of seems to me that whenever the PSP soundtrack is brought up it's always tied to some sort of vitriol, which to me seems undeserved.

I mean, the Persona PSP remake soundtrack was fine for what it was, I like a lot of tracks on it, it's just, I don't even understand how anyone can make the case that it wasn't a downgrade to the OG masterpiece. Even in raw quantitative terms, you're going from 113 tracks and 187 minutes of music, to 67 tracks and like, 64 minutes of music. There's just no comparison.

It depends on how you measure quality of a soundtrack, I suppose. If you go by sheer variety, then yes, the original is clearly superior. But just in terms of how much I liked the individual songs, I enjoyed them quite a bit, and it didn't hamper my enjoyment of the port at all. And this is speaking as someone who has an enormous amount of nostalgia for the original, as Revelations: Persona was what introduced me to the MegaTen franchise.

yeah of course, I was just using the numbers as a baseline comparison. I think just about every single track on the original is superior to the new version, whether it's instrument choices, melodies, complexity, general vibe or whatever.

There's one new track on the PSP version that I feel does a great job at capturing the original game's atmosphere, that's the new Karma Palace theme (which also plays in the subway for no reason, so much unnecessary track reuse haha)

To each their own, I suppose. It may just be that I look at it from the perspective of adding more songs to my growing library of awesome Shoji Meguro music.

I'm beyond ecstatic. Never thought it'd happen in my wildest dreams.

To finish the Saturn version or not...

Also, my favorite song:

This should look incredible in 3D. Wonder if they're doing up the OST too?

Also also, maybe Atlus USA'll save time and get Gemini and Tom in on this if they're doing it? Unlikely though.

Exists in a perpetual state of Quantum Crotch Uncertainty.
When this comes out in English I'll be able to experience the joy of playing through a game in English that I previously sort of stumbled through in Japanese while making up my own plot as I went along.

I sincerely look forward to being irrationally affronted when the game turns out to not be a tale of a drug mule turned FBI informant chafing at the increasingly unreasonable demands placed upon him by his ambiguously-beneficent handler and escaping into the questionably-comforting embrace of the wares he previously peddled but personally spurned.

If it's anything like the DS remake of Dragon Quest 6 I'll spend the entire game in a huff because the remake is completely different from what I remember of the original.

Rank the top 5 plots for me? I'd like to get into the series. Include Persona games.

Personally?

1. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
2. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment(best to play P1 and P2: IS first for optimal effect)
3. Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
4. Digital Devil Saga
5. Shin Megami Tensei

Honorable mention would be Persona 3.

There's enough good megaten related stories so a top5 isn't really sufficient! That's one thing I like about megaten and megaten-related games, they tend to have good plots. Recently Devil Survivor 1 & Raidou 2 were both great stories with good casts.

Not a fan of the Devil Survivor games?

They were hit and miss, but largely good stuff.

This in particular was amazing:

Yup, and even though this is just loosely related, i'd really like to see Kenji Ito take a spin on arranging some of the tracks for remakes or even take the reigns on another major release after hearing DS2. Captured the feel of a real city based SMT nicely imo (kinda biased since i'm a big fan of his soundtracks/style too).

Does Maken X count as part of the series, or does it just share composers and Kaneko art? Also was Revelations the Demon Slayer GBC any good?

EDIT: Maybe I should be asking this in the SMT community thread.

I'm curious as well. I've played around 6 or 7 of them so far and they're all fantastic. I hear Persona 1 was not great though.

The only ones regarded as god-awful are NINE and Rondo.

http://hardcoregaming101.net/megaten/megaten4.htm

The rest are subjective. Persona 1 and Devil Summoner(the very first one before Soul Hackers) are dated as heck, and nigh unplayable, but have their charms.

Heck, I even love the DemiKids games.

And Maken X technically isn't SMT, just R&D1 doing a great action game. Any SMT fan would love it though.

I thought Maken X looked familiar. I might pick that up tomorrow. I almost bought DemiKids for 99 cents the other day, but I tried it first and it just felt like a poorly done pokemon clone. Am I far off by assuming that?

Well, it has demon conversation and Lucifer. So, I'd call it an awesome Pokemon clone.

Get Dark Version if you can.

Was so psyched when Gemini got started on translating the PSX original, and am even more psyched that it's coming over officially now! Seeing older jrpgs finally get localized warms my heart...

I paid good money for this Dynex!

Maken X, while not precisely good, was really pretty cool. And it had some really moody music. Definitely worth checking out for fans of the dev. studio.

I never got a chance to play the sequel to it, though. Maken Shao or whatever the hell it was called. It came out in Europe, I know that.

It's not a sequel, it's a 3rd person port/remake. Never played it, but I hear the DC version is considered superior.

I've only played a few hours of Maken Shao because I couldn't stand the controls. The general impression I got wasn't a good one.

Well, it's not. Soul Hackers is clearly just an enhanced port.

I've played nearly every SMT game ever made.

Soul Hackers' plot easily makes top 5. Mostly thanks to the setting.
Did you understand them all?

Save Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 for the end. It's quite the time commitment, but DDS2 truly is the best in the series in terms of story IMHO. Persona 3 and Nocturne are pretty close as well. I'm still working my way through Devil Survivor.

Man, Digital Devil Saga 2 was sooooooooooo good. The whole experience was easily one of the best of any PS2 RPG.

If anyone's interested Gemini said that he won't be quitting the Ps1 version fantranslation.
Although I'm a bit happy so I can play with the Ps1 version I bought, I can't say I really agree with his decision.

Too bad about NINE, I found it inspiring from the images and videos I found on the net.
I also saw it for sale in Tokyo for something like 380 Yen ($5!) and it was a huge nice box too!
Then I remebered about the hg101 article and I didn't get it. Big as it was I couldn't have taken it back home anyway...

If Atlus USA announces the translation before he's finished, I hope he has the decency to back out. I respect the effort, and I was as excited as anyone, but I don't want him costing Atlus sales.

I have never played Soul Hacker. I know it's in the Megaten family, and I love Persona, so my question is Soul Hacker like the Persona games as far as the life sim and "choice" options are concerened, or because it was a Saturn game was there not much of that?

Whoa, the owner of that Youtube channel keeps all of those tracks well organized. Really impressed.

I would rather play it on Saturn though. Not a fan of remakes in general.
