Just some scattered thoughts. This is a bit of a hot button for me, so I apologise in advance if I seem rude or unfocused. This isn't aimed at anyone in this thread in particular.

I've no truck with this "kids are dumb" line of thinking. Kids are incredibly discerning, harsh critics.

So something you liked as a kid seems juvenile through the lens of adulthood. Well, how 'bout that shit. Your tastes are going to change. It's an intrinsic part of, well, growing up. There's no need to dismiss an aspect of your development, to retroactively apologise for being a kid, liking things for kids. It's absurd.

While you have a point that children can be underestimated, I think it's simply that we're new to life and thus much easier to please. It's the same reason why we either stop playing with blocks or take it to a whole other level, and as we experience more we come to recognize more of the flaws in a lot of these cartoons. Works that tried to go for a more all-ages approach (read: not actively annoy adults) tend to be more enduring, like I suspect a lot of those Nicktoons have been, versus some of that 80s stuff meant to sell toys, and on the flipside... yeah, there's a lot of crappy cartoons we thought were crap even as toddlers. Plus more "mature" works aren't immune to this, FFIV's plot is ridiculous to me now and that was aimed at teenagers rather than 8 year olds (though that IS when I seriously got into it), and we saw the Six Million Dollar Man pulled out.

I guess I must the only one who doesn't get hung up on whether a show holds to my superior adult sensibilities or is just a child's show.
it's a cartoon and I enjoy animated fare to one degree or other. but I can honestly say the stuff that i watched as a kid I still enjoy today regardless of what came after. it's like saying you can't enjoy playing the NES because you have an X-box now. *shrug*

it's a cartoon and I enjoy animated fare to one degree or other. but I can honestly say the stuff that i watched as a kid I still enjoy today regardless of what came after. it's like saying you can't enjoy playing the NES because you have an X-box now. *shrug*

Nah, I think it's more like that crappy LJN licensed game you liked as a kid is something you absolutely can't stand now, but Kirby's Adventure (if we're going for light kiddy stuff let's go all the way) is still a great, fun game to play.

And I think most of us have SOME cartoons we still like as adults, and not even the ones that were meant for adults anyway like the Simpsons, but stuff like Rocko (see anyone citing THAT?) or Batman. It's mainly shit like the game licensed cartoons that are the bottom of the barrel to me, but then I never liked those as much as other cartoons even then most of the time, or disliked them in the first place. But that follows a general rule of licensed = crappy.

Also, it's fun reminiscing, even if what you loved as a child is kind of crappy as an adult. I'll always be more nostalgic for Transformers than not, even if it turns out the entire cartoon series was garbage. I'll definitely give it a spin again now that it's on Netflix streaming, or at least those last three episodes since I was a dumb toddler and recorded over most of the climax of the final episode.

It's also a lot of stuff from notoriously horrible animation studios like Filmation, DiC, 70's - 80's Hanna Barbera and Rainmaker.

I'm sorry, but the film doesn't hold up. The dub is one of the worst. It's a rush job of an adaptation, barely any of the plot makes sense. It's still a benchmark of animation and still influenced loads of stuff, especially recently Chronicle, but the film itself ain't that good.
