Halo |OT3| Remember Reach?

From that timeline...

"A monument is erected in Kenya to mark the end of the war. Only five Spartan IIs remain alive, including the missing John 117."

Did not know this, are the other 4 the Spartans from Onyx? (I haven't finished Onyx yet, nor the newer books).

"The first Spartan IVs enter service aboard the UNSC Infinity. One Spartan II is equipped with Mjolnir Mk VII armour."

Which Spartan II is this? Kurt?

Urm

This is for everyone but you deadly cyclone DONT READ IT
How do we break it to him

FUCK YOU GUYS

Ah well, *jumps off bridge.*

Kidding, I don't mind seeing spoilers of the book, I get the same out of it. :p

So that being said, Halo 4 BETTER have us meeting up with the rest of the II's.

Both Glasslands spoilers. Kind of. I forgot the one who has the Mark VII, but Kurt was killed off at the end of Ghosts of Onyx. Fred, Linda, Kelly, that other Spartan II (it's a girl), and John are still alive.

Oh man, just reading that makes me want a "Noble Team"-esque game featuring these characters. Maybe pre-Covenant war, with gameplay akin to Republic Commando.

No. But I'm the only one.

I didn't quite like how Bungie did the Spartan "team" idea, but I think 343 can nail it. I want highly tactical combat scenarios like they had in the books (Onyx in particular). Every move was so calculated. Also, where are our HUD lights to flash green/red/amber?

I was thinking Spartan Ops would be a great place to have some Spartan II missions. Heck, they could even do some of the encounters from the greater fiction in Ops.

With the possibility of them ending up like Reach's Spartans? No thanks. I'd rather keep the idea of working alongside Spartans confined to the fiction. That way I'll never be disappointed with the realization of them in the games.

Also I'm not sure if I like the idea of "invincible allies." Takes away some of the tension of the battle and helps pull you out of the campaign.

The only way I think you can realize that is make the combat highly scripted, and that's something I want the least of all in a Halo game.

The day we get a Republic Commando-like Halo game with a team of Spartans that feel like real people is the day I can die a happy man
but not really
.

Still though, gimme.

Frankie or David, can you confirm that Halo 4 will take advantage of the higher quality voice chat that's already available in parties? I believe Halo: CEA did already because it seemed indistinguishable from party chat.

I would assume it does. I mean, wasn't that codec update post-Reach launch? I can't remember, and I don't even know if it's relevant... The transition between party chat and game chat is icky, almost feels like going back and playing Halo 2 with a bunch of voice-maskers.

It's fine kylej, don't worry about it. Some of my best friends are dickheads!

It's OK to have a "devil's advocate".

Also, why am I no longer a Junior? Did I do something nice?

Pretty sure she's the Mk. VII lady. That entire book is a blur to me now.

Just finished up going through legendary on halo 2 pc for the first time in a few years and forgot how fun a lot of that campaign is. But dear god the horror of the jackal snipers on some of those levels. I was getting sniped out of hogs and ghosts constantly at some points.

I assumed that after watching the
face melting into helmet
part.

Watching Prometheus' trailer before The Avengers was cumtastic...
3D was screwed up in my theater for almost 2 entire trailers, crowd doesn't know how to shut the fuck up.

I think I'm done with going to the movies.

So then, what happened to Jun after Reach? Is that in one of the books?

Nope. Either he died, became a Spartan IV or he merged with the triumvirate of god A.I.'s left on Reach and became ruler of the universe.

No. Not really. A green Spartan is mentioned in the extra stuff of Fall Of Reach re-issue but it is not said if it is Jun.

That's one of the female II's, I forgot her name. She was escorting Halsey when she was killed during the battle of FuckifIremember VI. The Covenant abducted Halsey, which led into the 'The Package' short.

Reach MLG is really fucking good. I've been completely blown away since returning to the game a couple of weeks ago, it feels completely difference. I guess that's what happens when players aren't hamstrung by arbitrary bullet bloom.

I just wish there was some sort of visual skill based ranking system, if it had that I might play up until Halo 4. As is, despite just reaching Brigadier, I think I'll probably get side tracked soon by something else.

You said this before almost word for word and I meant to comment on it then, but why is a visual ranking so necessary for you? It would practically do the same exact thing; it would only be different in that there was a nice number for easy, albeit truncated, comparison.

It makes people care. It makes people really try their best to win, to get that 50. It makes every match matter. It's also a good indicator to see if someone is good or not (or a boost

Bungie and 343 have let Social get too big for itself. It was always like 50.50 in H2 and H3 and they had alotta ranked playlists to compete in. In Reach there were two now there's just one. They are catering too hard to the casuals who don't even play MP. The casuals play the campaign and a bit of MP then leave. The casuals who do stay are fine getting matched with lower class players, it works in their favor too!

Halo has always been about besting your friends, pooping all over randoms, and acting better than everyone else. That's why its so addicting and fun.

Awwww... I'm touched

Yo this controller has reinvigorated my desire to play Halo like crazy again. Not gonna go and start up the Weekly Montage again but damn I don't really mind playing alone again. I'm sure after a few games today my mind will change back again lol

edit: Also the controller seems to have fixed a problem I was having with my mic. I always thought it was the Astro cable but I guess it was the controller. With the old controller the in game voice indicator would be constantly going off even when I wasn't speaking. Now it doesn't do that. Pretty cool.

It's getting too chummy in here.

Kyle, drop an off-brand pejorative that may or may not be construed as anti-gay. Someone get that guy who 'shops AL into Halo 4 screens on the wire. Reach is the pinnacle, bloom was always in Halo, MLG is a bunch of no-drawers-claiming tryhards. The gametype sucks too.

Free screening was free.

I respect it.

Firstly, the ranking system in Reach isn't just hidden, it's shit. I matched up before with one of my friends who I was actually in party chat with, completely randomly. Now, not blowing my own trumpet but I'm obscenely better than he is, yet we just matched each other. In Halo 2 or 3 this would not happen, because he'd be floating around the 30 mark and I'd be scratching 45 and above.

Now that's the first thing out of the way, but a visual ranking system also gives method to how you're matching up with people, which as a result reduces the frustration when you have an obscenely poor player on your team. In previous Halo games I could sort of judge that, indeed, a player was just having an off game and that they weren't entirely terrible, whereas in Reach and potentially Halo 4 if it's similarly vague you have no way of telling whether your teammates and opponents are around your skill level. Such as my aforementioned example regarding my friend.

Finally it offers some actual incentive to play on, or have that extra game. If you come on and drop a level then you're less likely to go off, because you don't want to end the evening at a loss. It's sort of like gambling, you aim to increase your winnings so to speak. Right now the game just doesn't have that; it has a generic, boring and entirely unoriginal experience system that rewards play time rather than player ability.
