Halo |OT3| Remember Reach?

Best thing about Forge is the mini games.

Outside of some exceptions from MLG, I've never seen a good forge map in matchmaking. There have been a few that are decent at best, but that's about as much praise as I'll give them.

As to the forge talk, I sincerely hope that whatever comes with Halo 4 is above and beyond what Reach offered. I think anyone who is interested at all in making maps is beyond the stagnancy of the monochrome building blocks and ready to graduate to something that's more appropriate to the longevity of matchmaking.

Reach is probably going to be remembered for it's poor map offerings with the one good thing about that is the fact that we're not likely to ever see a Reach remake map pack any time soon.

I dunno, imagine Spire but set at midnight on an abandoned oil tanker in the arctic. Ship it, 343.

Aye, and even MLG isn't immune. I'm not a huge fan of Nexus to be honest. The Pit remake is golden though; a couple of the jumps are a bit easier, but on the whole it gets close to the original. Such a shame the whole thing's fairly atrocious on the eyes because of the consistent grey colour grading.

They admitted to using Forge World to save time because they couldn't create multiple skyboxes and levels with unique geometry and whatnot inside the time they had. There was even a debate on here with folks discounting Forge World Bungie map made because they were made in Forge. The ill-feeling towards these maps has existed even before Reach came out.

I'm usually very vocal in my criticisms of Reach but I'd like to turn that on its head for just a moment and appreciate some of the shipping maps that Reach does very well.

Boardwalk - is an enjoyable 4v4 or 5v5 Slayer, 1-Flag or 1-Bomb map. It's pretty solid but maybe not spectacular. It should never have been forced into BTB. The map is really consistent with good settings.

Countdown - another solid map that maybe has too many power weapons in the default layout. I don't Objective games on this map but it's a pretty solid Slayer experience.

Powerhouse - I actually don't think the map at all. But many others do. A lot of folks will agree it's a pretty solid Slayer/1-sided Objective map.

Reflection - again, another solid Slayer map and 1-sided objective. The map does drop in quality when the gametypes allow Armour Abilities, particularly jetpack, to over run it.

Zealot - I can't stand this map, but like Powerhouse, it does have it's fans. I guess it depends heavily on the settings and tweaks and gametypes (and making sure the abuse heavy top isn't used).

Reach isn't a total washout. It makes me sad however that the number of decent or good maps are so low. An the BTB shipping maps are not even worth talking about. The DLC has certainly helped the map situation but the way DLC is implemented in matchmaking means that after the honeymoon period is over with each DLC release, the mixing of the DLC maps is such that you'll rarely get a chance to play them optimally.

All fine points, I just personally think boardwalk is horrible, and never liked zealot, it always felt like a halo 3 dlc map (assembly i think?). The least they could have done is take a pic of the overview of each level instead of putting the same generic forge world picture in the voting screen.

Penance MLG can blow me. I just hate playing on that map. Nexus, I just have to be in the mood for...which is rare.

Luckily nobody ever votes for Nexus.

I can see a Reach map pack down the line: Swordbase, Powerhouse, and Boardwalk. It should only be considered after all H2 remake options are exhausted. One thing that I'm hoping for is that they don't do any more CE remakes. I could tolerate Sidewinder/Avalanche, Blood Gulch (assuming it's a faithful Coag remake instead of the former), and Battle creak/Beaver Creek but that's it. I don't want to see hang em high ever again.

Countdown and Zealot are the best of the bunch, but I'd still only put them on the level as say, Construct. They're good but nothing special. Zealot's a bit of a cluster fuck and Countdown's far too vertical for my liking.

Luckily nobody ever votes for Nexus.
Last night the players in my game vetoed Slayer on Battle Creak for King on Nexus. I felt like throwing my head through the tv.

Silly overdoz1z. Don't you remember, we tried Forge playlists before! Not so popular.

wut.

terminal, turf, containment, relic, burial mounds, foundation, gemini....etc.

All of them should be remade, since they were the best maps in series.

I would prefer some halo 3 maps before reach remakes. Guardian was always a favorite of mine and would be fun. High Ground and rat's nest would be fun too.

No maps should be remade. Give me new good maps

Well with Guardian and The Pit in Halo 4, you know they'll at least be fun with MLG settings. If there really is a split matchmaking system of "classic" playlists and new fancy playlists, they should be fun on whatever the classic settings are too.

Of course all this is irrelevant if 343's map editor can match a 4 eyar old Ubisoft game's map editor. Make it happen 343.

I think disc maps built from the ground up are always appreciated eventually as good even if they have flaws. Usually they are more condensed and less oblong, with fewer dead zones around the perimeter that you would simply traverse through if taken from campaign. Best examples; Boardwalk and Spire.

Again, that's not really how Reach maps were made. They were designed as MP spaces and blended into campaign. But regardless, we're not doing that with Halo 4.

Forgot about that, but sometimes it makes you wonder.

In the First Look vidoc you guys mentioned not ripping maps out of campaign but instead building them from the ground up for multiplayer. I always felt like that was a bit of a jab at Reach because a lot of people thought the maps were taken from campaign.

Could have fooled me!

Really? Design wise they were fundamentally different from the rest of the campaign spaces. You could arrive at an MP crossover map in Reach's campaign and know it would be a multiplayer crossover map without ever having played on it.

It just so happened that they made up a rather large percentage of the campaign, which is where people's confusion come from.
