Why are black people so universally hated?

ya....no

You are sorely mistaken if you think the criminal stereotype didn't exist or was in the background until the 90's. The scary black man stereotype has always been there along with the other shit that went around during that time as well. You act as if gangsta rap never got off the ground black people would experience no form of discrimination and we would live in the great post-racial world Obama was supposed to bring to us.

Okay, now I see. You clearly don't understand what I am arguing. We better stop it here.

cuz of the way we look.

Humans are very visual creatures, and people for the most part have immigrated and have been shipped to Countries where people look VERY different from them.

...so Black people are the default "outsiders"

You said rap is a big reason for the discrimination blacks face now was it not?

No! This is not what I said. I said that blacks are hated for how they are portrayed/portray themselves in rap/gangsta culture.

Edit: Also, I never said that it was the sole reason for the hatred. Before you try to blame that one on me.

1. Because they have dark skin and dumb people are afraid of dark skin
2. The portrayal of black people in the media
3. People having bad experiences with black people that also happened to be dumb people and applying it to all black people

Just before those are being brought up even more..

1. I disagree. That is an assumption is based on nothing. People arent afraid because the "colour" is black and black is frightening. People are afraid because others are different, which applies to almost every other ethnic minority as well. The exceptions are ethnic minorities that dont differ to much from the general look of a "American White", like Italians or even Brits.

2. The portrayal of black people in the media is nothing that makes people afraid of them. They are usually used in sports ads, mostly nothing that needs/promotes intelligence, but also doesnt make them seem frightening. A bit simple minded, but thats actually what the general US populace vastly prefers over ethnicities that are depicted as intelligent.

3. That is indeed a valid reason.

Black people are probably less hated and feared now than we have been in the last 200+ years of American history.

Of course, being hated and feared simply for being "different skinned" (as some of our less educated brethren would describe us) is never a good thing.

You just paraphrased what I said. Read what I said again and then read what you said. I guess i didn't use "portray themselves" but I meant the same thing

I'm pretty sure everyone knows what a black person looks like. The thing is many people that have never come in contact with black people still hate them anyway.

How can you make such sweeping statements? That's the same kind of small-mindedness that feeds the fire of people who make assumptions of people they have never met before. "Many" implies a near majority to me.

Biggest examples I can think of at the moment would be South Korea, Turkey, and Russia.

Have you lived in these places? Or have you just read stories from reporters that have combined a handful of seperate incidents and formed a narrative? You could do the same thing in America and make it seem like the most racially hostile place on the planet.

Many times people make assumptions based upon what media they consume. So, if someone has not come in contact with a group of people, they will often take the caricacture of those people and assume it to be true. So, it's not hating on the actual people .. but merely the representation of their exagerrated flaws (via mass media).

You don't have to come in contact with a group to hate a group.

Actually, I would say coming in contact with a group of people is the more likely cause of deep-rooted racism. Moreso than the general ignorance or fear of 'the others' that you describe. Personal experience is what pours the concrete in our minds. So, if you have had a series of poor experiences with certain people, it can have a negative effect that you can never shake off and actually manifest itself into horrible actions.

I don't necissarily agree. Asians look different too but are viewed very differently by white people. It's not the "they look different" alone.

The initial statement you replied to is completely wrong, since it applies to almost every other ethnicity. No need to beat around the bush.

Pretty much, and because of that it is much easier pin stereotypes and behaviors to us, especially as a means to justify and rationalise some people's bigotry.

Just look at the insults we face, it mostly about skin colour and nothing else.

Like I said before, it because we're easier to spot.

Sorry, is this offensive? I don't know, since I don't live in the US.

No its not, its a completely neutral term talking about this issue. I am studying this stuff, dont let others confuse you about that. We dont need to start up discussions about racial intents where there is clearly none.

Seriously guys. This shit is WRONG. Can you please stop that? The dominant dislike has NOTHING to do with the black skin color. Of course the fact that your skin color is different is a factor for prejudicial behaviour, but thats the same for almost every other ethnic minority as well.

No, there is a big difference. As I said, I feel you don't understand what I am trying to argue. Maybe I'm presenting my points not good enough. If this it the case, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. We should stop the discussion because it's getting circular.

This thread is very close to being a ban trap, but my opinion anyway:

In racist communities, this might be related to the primitive fear of unfamiliar characteristics in people. It might be just a primitive envy though, let's see:

-Black people is bigger
-Black people is stronger
-Black people is well adapted to either cold or hot environments
-Black people created the most important music genres in the last 100 years or so.

Edit: With this, I'm just talking about the possible perspective of an openly racist group. With the regular population, I don't see blacks being "universally hated"

I don't know, just my point of view.

I have never lived in those places but from people I know that have and people on this forum that talk about their experience in those places, as well as reports on the issue, it general seems as if there is a genuine dislike for black people there even though not many black people live there at all. I do agree with your last point though that it's just general ignorance, but it becomes a problem when its more directed towards one group of people than others.

okay we will go with your way. So if black people didn't portray themselves negatively in rap post 1990's, much of the hatred that is had wouldn't exist?

Personally I thought such a wording would be considered slightly 'iffy' but I retract my previous statement if this isn't a 'thing'.

If my only impression of black people came from American media I'd hate us too.
Now as I’m sure this thread has gotten ridiculous already I’m gonna bail out.

It would exist, but in a different form. Just as much hatred. Exactly the same amount.

I'm speaking for Gustav because it's pretty obvious what he means and I can't shake the feeling you're going to keep making him express the same point in different ways until he finally fucks up some wording somewhere and then you can go 'Ha! racist!'. Poor show.

Because they're just like females, they want every single benefit but none of the responsability.
When white people, say, "hey, black guy", it's like the worse thing ever. But when black people say "hey, white guy." It's not a big deal.
Or that attitude that black people have of always playing the victim role. Oh, he discriminated me because I'm black, not because I just can't afford this, or because my security level isn't enough to pass through that door. No, it has to be because I'm black.

And no, I don't really care about skin color, in my family we have diversity and we don't really care about such issues. Sometimes I call my relatives "hey, blackie" (it doesn't 'sounds' nice in english, but whatever) and they don't flip their shit or anything. And of course, sometimes they call me Gasper, or whatever.

Maybe it's because the culture, that we aren't too oversensitive with the issue. I don't know. But I do know why people usually hate on most black people, and sometimes they're right. Sorry if this is not popular or anything, but that's how it is here.

It's just long-rooted racism. It might seem ages ago, but it's only been a little over one century when slavery still existed. It's only been one generation since we had the civil rights movement.

Racism may not be as overt today in this political climate, but it's still there, and even people who claim not to be racists will still hold prejudices.

This won't go away for some time, and probably not until aliens invade the earth, at which point, black or white won't matter.

Not really my intention at all. I just wanted to get where he was coming from because I didn't understand it. If he said what you just said I wouldn't continue prodding him on what he means because I honestly didn't know. I'm a guy that likes to get peoples intentions, not brand them as a racist because of a weird slip up.

I'm not sure why it is but lighter skin is seen as a positive in most societies around the world. We are growing out of that mentality now but it will take time.

because people are racist fucks

black people are really good at music, sex, life

I think it is best not to try and box groups into certain roles. It doesn't really help anyone when you say black people are good at music and sex. I know you are trying to be positive but in some ways it just reinforces old stereotypes.

Because all the stupid shit we do is reported on and judged on a daily basis and we make it so easy because we are always doing stupid shit that can easily be reported on a judged. I hate black people sometimes too.

We are also held at some vague higher standard as well I feel. This may be completely incorrect but I definitely have this feeling sometimes.

FACT:

The African American Male is the most imitated persona on the globe.

Source?

Who conducted the survey?

In which countries?

How many participants?

How does that point help the discussion here?

So many questions.

I agree that there is some value in that statement for this discussion if true. Useless though with no sources and no explanation. This is a very delicate topic, people shouldnt throw around these kind of comments without backing up these claims.
