The Wii U Speculation Thread V: The Final Frontier

Status
Not open for further replies.
Guys, all that patent has to do with is the golf game. The Wii U block diagram is from last year, and is only one example of how the data might flow for illustrative purposes.

Same with the controller's external shape/size. It's one example. There's another patent pertaining specifically to the DRC (also from last year) in which Nintendo pretty much covered all their bases. Sticks/sliders, shelf/no shelf, small form factor/large form factor, and so on.

Thus, these patents are useful in nurturing speculation on what Nintendo might implement re: the controller, GPU, etc, but the only thing that is definitive is what they describe in the claims - i.e. the golf game.

Edit: Btw, that controller in the patent is terrible. Accessing the dpad/buttons would be quite uncomfortable.

So wait...

Confirmed (more or less)

- Call of Duty Black Ops 2
- 007 Legends
- The Avengers Battle for Earth

Rumoured

- Final Fantasy XIV
Wow.. that's actually a lot for this past week or two (relatively speaking). We usually hear about how there's nothing new going on, but here we are, more bites of news..

I would never want to get banned and miss out on E3. I love GAF during E3 because of how rowdy and crazy people get. I enjoy watching people get banned during E3, but wouldn't want the same to happen. Hopefully no one else falls from this thread.
I find myself typing something and hitting the 'Back' button more often, that's for sure.

Yeah, the DRC has:
accelerometer (like the early Wii Remote)
- this gets very confused about what direction it's pointing while you're moving it, so it totally loses anything directional that isn't tilt
gyroscope (like Wii Motion Plus or Playstation Move)
- this can figure out if you're turning left or right pretty nicely, but it isn't perfectly accurate and drifts over time
magnetometer
- this can use the Earth's magnetic field to give you an idea of your absolute direction

Use all three together (extra nice if you also have that IR pointer to unambiguously tell you where the TV is), and you should be able to pretty accurately determine what direction the device is pointing with respect to the television set.

That is, if I'm understanding correctly what a magnetometer is. For all I know, it could just be a tool used for spiritual wellness. "Wii Heal"
Those are the worst descriptions of an accelerometer and gyroscope I've ever seen. You're correct about the magnetometer though.

Accelerometer: Detects linear acceleration, including gravitational acceleration. Cannot measure yaw. Very good at measuring just tilt or just perfectly linear motions but not so great when it comes to complex motions that involve both rotation and linear movement.

Gyroscope: Measures rotational displacement. Cannot measure any linear motions, cannot decipher the direction of gravity without external calibration. Is very good at measuring rotation and theoretically shouldn't be affected by linear motion however like you said, they can drift.

Essentially each device measures 3-axis each. Combine them together and you get the means of measuring all 6-axis. Throw in a magnetometer and an IR camera and you have a means of calibration.

john harker posted it. All you need to know is he is reliable. He did so at the beginning of this thread.
#232: John Harker (vouched for in #284, #285, #286, #289, et al), "the thumb sticks are clickable" ← speculation follows regarding the possibility of it being analog-"click", whether the flat nature of the Wii U analogs would make it feel less awkward, etc..
Thanks for clarifying. I hope this is true, most encouraging news i've hear regarding the controller in some time.

Grips would also make it sit completely flat when laid on the floor or a table, so I think that's the most likely final design.

The downside is if you try playing a game w/ your left hand using the analog stick and your right w/ a stylus or finger on the screen. The pad would be tough to balance. Additionally, there's no guarantee that (presumably rounded) grips would allow the DRC to balance completely steady. They could always make a cheap stand for lying the controller flat on the ground.

Yeah, those along with Bit.Trip Runner 2's "Wii have a few fun little updates coming for U" and the Cloudberry Kingdom thing… flame is very slowly starting to ignite.

It looks like the IR camera is out. Based on what you know, would a magnetometer make up for this fact? How good are they with absolute positioning?

Thanks, but linear acceleration was entirely out of the scope of what was being asked. I was answering a question specifically about how well the components measure rotation.

No idea. From what I hear about about the PS Move, probably not that great.

Mind you though, data drift is only an issue during prolonged sessions of 1:1 motion tracking. If you just use the sensors for discrete short motions you can just calibrate at the beginning of each motion using the devices starting position as the origin.

Oh ok, my bad.

I think they should select the biggest third party port that makes the best use of the controller and show it for a few minutes and then move on.
Pretty much. If there's a port that plays as well as RE4's Wii version, it could deserve some spotlight.. but otherwise, it gets a place on one of the (hopefully several) sizzle reels.

Hmmm. So in theory, the DRC might be programmed to recalibrate every time you hold it up and the camera catches your face straight on.

Still on the Wii Remote. Not on the DRC. Never was.

Yeah, we thought it had it for a brief time, but it turned out to almost certainly be an IR transmitter, not an IR camera.

But if you calibrate the gyrometer manually (by pointing it at the TV) just once at the beginning of the play session, and you don't actually move your body anywhere, then the DRC should always know that the TV is situated at (for example) 56° East of North, and it should be able to account for the rotational drift entirely. Is this correct, or am I missing something really basic?

Oh ok, my bad.

I could have been clearer, mind. But, wow, I'm definitely getting too into this stuff. I was all faceflushed and mildly ragey at your comment for no reason. Sorry about that, you seem like good peoples. :)

I'm hoping to train myself so as not to get banned come E3

Hmmm. So in theory, the DRC might be programmed to recalibrate every time you hold it up and the camera catches your face straight on.

The only problem here is that when people sweep around the DRC, they're generally still facing it. Like in that city streets demo where it's playing a video from the top of a car, but you can move the DRC left and right to see what's happening on the sidewalks, your face is still in front of the camera, even though you've rotated the controller a full 180°.

Avengers: Battle for Earth just increases my long held suspicion that the Wii U sensor bar will include a camera, with Kinect-lite functionality. It just doesn't make sense for the DRC sensor bar to have a camera, and the TV sensor bar would not.

So if the U Pad has a magnetometer, is it save to assume that the Stylus will be magnetic, so that you can use the U Pad's touch-screen functions without actaully thouching that thing.

If it's true, how likely is it that Nintendo will announce another WII MUSIC then?

I hope not.

IdeaMan

My source is my ass!
Exact lherre quote:

It's funny how most of you have selective reading. In no way did lherre "vouche" for Ideaman. Honestly I don't really trust any information unless it comes straight out of Nintendo's mouth (hell even that has some hiccups though) but at least people like ShockngAlberto, Hal_Labatory, Shikamura Ninja, etc. have given correct information before.

The verdict is still out on Ideaman, until E3 I guess (if he stops giving so much vague "news"). I believe you already now where I side though..

But you already said that what, XX times ? I thought it was settled, every time i catch up i fall upon a message of your like that, without me even posting since yesterday lol.

Well said.

Phew...

It starts to be irritating actually. It wasn't enough that you derailed the thread for several pages, with encouragement to bash a member ? Just ignore me, like some others suggested.

So we're back at the "IdeaMan is a fraud" stage? Ugh. Can we make a separate thread for that so it stops coming up every few hours? I mean, it's not like he's given any groundbreaking info anyway.

It's tiresome yes, my patience has limits. And i find it weird that a few members can obsessively and often in disregard of the TOS, jump continuously to that without being even warned, whereas elsewhere, this would be settled. Like the thread is a giant junk where posters can do what they want.

This is when we need ideaman to come back to tell us whether this has anything to do with the controller news he has.

why so a dozen posters can dogpile on him again?

So we'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.

i loled :)

For the patents, they are worrying me :p
Concerning the one of the system, we already talked about that, i find it weird.

Magnetometers are usually used to determine orientation. That video with the interaction between hand tool was the first I've heard that sort of use for it.

If the stylus were magnetic, then it might strongly interfere with the normal operation of the device (just like what happens if you put a magnet on a compass) when inside the controller (that is, when you haven't removed it to use it).

IdeaMan I defended you and equated you to Batman. I deserve something :p

Also GAF went down, that's been happening a lot lately. Wonder what's going on.

NeoGAF down because Nintendo Ninjas saw our newest piece of info?
Batman: It ends here.
Ra's al Ghul: For you and the moderators, maybe. My fight, however, lies with the rest of internet. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a forum to destroy.

Hey, I was once again only responding to a conversation that was not in anyway started by me. The only one bringing it up when the discussion is over is you. No one is disregarding the TOS, and no one has launched a personal attack against you. If the conversation sways to the topic of you then I have every right to state my opinion on it.

That golf patent gets me extremely excited for a future Tiger Woods.

I hate Ra's al Ghul, that scumbag!

I just hope that there won't be many technical problems with GAF when E3 starts

why are you guys talking about FF14 on Wii U?

Because ShockingAlberto is considered to be somebody with actual contacts in the industry.

#5818: Square-Enix apparently showing intent to port Final Fantasy XIV (bringing up the confirmed+rumoured Wii U MMO count to three)
