I have no idea how anyone can call WatXM "fucked".

Unless they had a strange hatred of Chris Bachalo, that is.

I ain't even bitching about the shitty art this week. Half the fucking roster left!

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
ugh, stupid fighting. I know comics are constantly recycling and retconning but The Avengers all pretty much killed them fucking selves to deal with Onslaught so long ago while mutants got to sit back and watch, so any of this supposed bad blood is just so forced given decades of history that says otherwise.

This is a truly terrible 'event'. It better get a whole lot more story to it with Wanda hopefully showing up and when Namek explodes, I mean, the Phoenix arrives.

The Rachel and Iceman thing just seemed like too much a betrayl of trust and disrespect there to just have them slot in fine afterwards. Its put a dampener on the fun atmosphere the book had going forward, and then the Rogue/Gambit side of things that havent even popped up in WatXM before just swanning off as well. Cyclops is being an absolute dickbag, and constant issues of misunderstandings leading to fights is one thing, but people believing his shtick after having chosen 'a side' is dumb.

Combined with UXF this week, it just seemed a bit of a "everybody leaves Wolvie's team" epidemic. I hope he at least leaves the Avengers or something in kind.

Its not as if Wolverine hasn't dropped everything and gone off to service old debts/grudges. Fook Wolverine. Cyclops 4 lyfe

After watching the amazing Avengers movie, my girlfriend became interested in reading some avengers comics. Are there any Avengers graphic novels/tpbs from over the years you guys would recommend? Any cool monthly series from the last few years that would be easy to get into?

Yes, they did, speaking strictly from the pages of WatXM 10. Did you read the issue? The entire issue was worthless. The entire issue-long conversation between Cyclops and Wolverine was 100% pointless. No one's motivations were made less dumbfounding. Cyke presented no reason whatsoever that anybody should go join his cause and yet at the end a bunch of people decide to leave for no reason. It was a terrible issue and it's because of AvX.

Their motivations make total sense. Cyclops was drawing the line in the sand once and for all. After this there can't be divided loyalties. Time is up.

Cyclops is marching off to his doom and the doom of all X-Men (maybe). Iceman says the followed Wolverine because he needed them there. Iceman, Rachel and the gang were serving out loyalty to Xavier's dream. They never stopped being family despite being divided on this issue. Now, Cyclops is about to go up against something nobody but Hope could possibly defeat. Right or wrong they are going to help their friend survive.

I think the unanimous " what Avengers book should i read after seeing Avengers" would be the The Ultimates: Ultimate Collection TPB vol 1 and 2.

that's the ultimate universe though, what the Avengers movie was kind of based on though Marvel is trying to align the movie with their regular universe.

Regular universe monthly titles to jump into:

Schism HC or paperback
Wolverine and the X-Men is on issue #9
Avengers Vs X-Men

I think that would get a reader up to what's going on in the Marvel Universe now and ready for when AvX ends because that's going to likely be a good jumping on point for many other books since there will be large creative shifts.

Past stories that are great in the recent years:

Captain America by Ed Brubaker through issue #42 ( the first two Omnibus collections or start with the Ultimate tpbs)

Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon, the director of Avengers. The Omnibus collects it all or there are Ultimate TPB collections.

Did Marvel ever collect Busiek's Avengers run from the late 90s? Gosh that was a good comics era: Busiek Avengers and Thunderbolts, Morrison on JLA...

I know they did a reprint recently of his first two story arcs, the third one should be out this month according to Amazon.

edit: Actually the first TPB covers his first 12 issues, and the second one has 12-23, O, ANNUAL '99, 1 ROUGH CUT.

I'm talking about the motivations of ANYONE during this event. Captain America's "plan" is fucking retarded. Cyclops' "plan" is retarded. Nobody has a clue what the Phoenix force even wants or what it's going to do when it gets here but that doesn't stop everybody from drawing bullshit lines and punching each other like a bunch of stupid comic book characters. The entire setup for this event is stupid and pointless and I wouldn't even care if it stayed in the AvX books and left my comics alone but now I'm dealing with this same crap in WatXM and it's upsetting me. I can only hope this turns into another Schism where the setup and execution was amateur bullshit but it lead to something great anyways.

Cool, thanks.

These might be a good starting point for new comics readers who wander into the shop after seeing the movie. These stories are stripped down, fun, and (most important) not entwined in other books' continuity.

Busiek's Iron Man kicked ass, too.

Cap's plan is pretty sound actually compared to Cyke's.

a) launch preemptive strike against enemy force away from domestic soil and innocent civilians.
b) put best and brightest minds to work devising countermeasures against the enemy force, should preemptive strike fail.
c) claim enemy force's objective as your own before enemy's arrival, use objective as bait to trap enemy force.

Cyke's plan by comparison hinges a great deal upon faith: faith in Hope to be able to handle the Phoenix once it gets here, and faith in his team to help her control and harness its power.

Well, tomorrow is the day. So I've been talking about getting into comics, but I wasn't aware that there was any sort of shop around me that sold them. Little did I know, there's a gaming/comic/cool nerdy stuff shop right by where I commute to everyday, and since tomorrow are finals, after I take my last couple of tests, and then workout, I'm going to unwind and relax the rest of the day by reading a comic or two.

My only problem is that I have no idea what they carry, and I have no idea what I want to start with. I honestly can't remember a superhero universe or character(s) I didn't like, be it from film or video game, except for like the Fantastic 4. So my only roadblock is that I have no idea where to start. A comic that is a little unorthadox that has caught my eye is Demon Knights. I like the aestetic and I'm a sucker for that type of fantasy stuff. The art looks really cool. My only real hesitation is that, do I really want that to be like my first series? With all these amazing superhero collections that have built up reputations over the years, do I really want to start a new hobby with that?

Not sure yet, but I'll definitely update after it happens tomorrow. Should at least be interesting.

It's not a bad start, especially since it's rather self contained and sets up the characters involved nicely, and is a very solid, enjoyable book.

If you can find it, Saga from Image just started last month, your shop might have or can order the first issue for you. It's a sci-fi "epic" from Brian K Vaughan and is definitely " new hobby starter" worthy.

Shit...why did I post my story when everyone was posting hot chick pics? Shitty timing. XD

Less to do with timing and more the fact that you posted a story in the first place. Rule number 1 of Comic-GAF is don't post words when pictures of hot chicks will do.

Sienkiewicz is the shit

This looks amazing. Is this collected? I only know of Dani through recent New Mutants issues and she does nothing to really stand out there. Probably just because of Abnett and Lannings' focus on nonsensical plotting.

Demon Knights is not terrible by any means, you might even like it. But really get thinking about what it is that you want from a story and maybe we can help narrow your choices down. It's a bit like saying "I want to see a movie, but I don't know what I like". What genre? You want action or art? Character or boobies? A mix of everything?

IMO (and I say this all the time), don't buy single issues. They're terrible value, too short and are a major time and money investment for a new reader. Instead, you should focus on trades, or collected editions as you might know them. Find a story you like the look of (a good shop will let you browse as long as you like) and buy a volume of it.

A few books you might like - you mention FF, so you might enjoy the first trade of the recent Jonathan Hickman run (ask the sotre owner for more info). It's good great art and Hickman is the best FF writer in years. They just released a new trade for Scott Snyder's Batman run - first volume, kicking off an amazing story, this might actually blow your mind if you don't know what to expect.

There's a bunch of AMAZING stuff from image that will be in trade in a few months, most of which is worth reading (Glory, Prophet, Saga, Thief of Thieves, Manhattan Projects...).

Anyway, enjoy, and make sure you ask lots of questions.

as much as i want everyone to read Chew (and you can't beat $25 bucks for 25 issues) - this is one series i'll be buying tpbs or hardcovers for. it's only supposed to run 60 issues total and assuming the second half is as good as the first, this'll be one for the ages.

You indirectly convinced me to just use my $20 Amazon credit and buy the first few books off there. As convenient as the iPad would be, it was a fantastic first issue, and I'd really love to keep it on my shelves.

E: Weird one, but has anyone read "Complete Alice in Wonderland"? I'm a huge fan of the movie, and the art looks pretty awesome...

Thanks for all the advice everybody. I think I may be getting ahead of myself, seeing as I don't know how their collection is, or what degree of comics they have. Personally, I'm looking for something with great action and story. Great art is like a nice icing on the cake, I suppose, and I'm not one to be won over with sex appeal. (I never understood why people see movies or TV shows purely for the attractiveness of the star.)

Definitely. At first, I was a bit sketchy because of the price. But again, one read through issue 1 and I was hooked. So my Amazon order has been placed!

Chew Volumes 1-5 and Complete Alice in Wonderland (Hardcover). So excited!

I think most people buy trade collections on amazon/cheapgraphicnovels.com/instocktrades.com and then single issues at local comic stores or some online comic site like dcbservice.com/midtowncomics.com/etc
