Rape Scenes In Movies, Going Too Far?

So my roommate and I were talking about movies in general and then we got on the subject of revenge flicks. I mentioned I Spit On Your Grave (the remake) and we agreed that it was a awesome movie, but the rape scene was just too much. The Last House On The Left was another movie we thought of. It poses the question...are these movies taking the rape scenes too far? The two aforementioned movies are way too graphic and I can't watch them. I have to skip past them every single time. If you've never seen either movie's rape scene, I suggest you don't. I honestly think anyone who can watch them and NOT get creeped out might have some issues unbeknownst to them.

I just shut my mind and say... Hey its a movie, they are getting paid, nothing wrong with that.

Takes me off the movie for a bit.

They're messed up. What I dislike about them aside from their gratuitous nature is that they tend to misrepresent rape. It creates a myth and causes people to ignore what is actually is; often more subtle situations with people they know.

Yup, was also going to mention Irreversible. My film professor has been teaching a film class for over 15 years and Irreversible is one of 2 films he has ever let people skip out on for viewing.

One of the hardest thing I've ever watched. Funnily enough the same movie also has another ridiculous scene that is just about as hard to watch.

But anyways I would have to disagree a bit. I'm not saying that they aren't too much in all cases, that's definitely true in some instances. But at the same time I think it can be very necessary to get across a point, such as the case in Irreversible.

Once you see the rape scenes in A Serbian Film, you'll think everything else is like intimate spooning. I want to bleach it from my mind.

Meh. It's just rape, stop being a pussy.
Seriously though, no. With the correct intent, I don't think anything in cinema could be considered as going too far. Even violence, sexual or otherwise, shown simply for effect with no artistically justifiable cause could (should?) only be seen as being tasteless rather than as being too far.

Watch Irreversible, if you dare. That was a painful experience. I wanted to stop watching, but somehow I endured it.

I watched The Accused a few years ago.

Just don't really have any desire to see another rape scene again.

So you'd class the rape scene as being ridiculous?
How so?
It's an extremely realistic representation of an actual rape by all accounts.....

I think it's important for the narrative that we don't gloss over scenes that might be uncomfortable to watch. The taboo against showing violence against women on screen does something of a disservice to the message of the film, especially in films based on a true story. I don't know, I guess giving certain themes the kid glove treatment makes the film fall flat for me...

My point is, that this stuff happens in real life. And you should be affected by it when you see it. Having cameras pan away or having the scene off camera seems like a very cowardly way to deal with something that the film maker clearly wanted to explore. I don't know if I'm explaining myself right or if I'm coming off as a violence junkie. All I'm saying is that if you want these horrible things to be a part of the character's journey, then the audience should go through the journey with them...

Films in general show too much. I don't need everything spelled out... some things are more effective when you fill in the blanks yourself.

Oh, I don't mean ridiculous as unrealistic or anything. I just mean that it's so crazy realistic that people will get caught off guard and more than likely be extremely offended by it.

And I agree, I think it's probably one of if not the most realistic representations of rape in film.

EDIT: The fact that the camera is just sitting on the floor and doesn't move (it's been awhile since I've seen it but I'm pretty sure that's true) just adds so much realism to it that it makes it that much more uncomfortable to watch.

But yeah for whoever mentioned that, the other scene I was talking about was the fire extinguisher one.

Go for it. Honestly, I never really thought it was as shocking or disturbing as everyone makes it out to be. Maybe that's just me.

Agree. I found the camerawork in general to be more unsettling than the most grotesque scenes. It's filmed like the camera was put on a roller coaster. Very cool, and kinda adds to that sickening, one hell of a night feel. Weird movie.

I don't mean I'm against having rape scenes in movies. I mean the depiction in some movies rather realistic or not can scar the fuck out of someone. Like watching I Spit On Your Grave, I'm pretty sure I saw a cock. I mean the angles they used, the force or the acting that one of the males use when pushing the girl's head into the ground. The fact the chick did the scene with no undies on. It was just too much for me.

Irreversible rape scene was really creepy... But it was kind of the purpose, it's like when someone is tortured and killed in some brutal way in a horror movie. A serbian film rape scenes were also nasty at times, it ranged from nasty to hilarious though, but yeah, new born porn was probably taking it too far in that movie...

Firstly, you watch awful films. Secondly watch Irreversible for the most rapeiest sex scene you will ever see but Irreversible is actually a good film if you can stomach it.

A Clockwork Orange.

Come on that was just the old in-out, love.

I totally agree, but then again - there are equally as bad things depicted at a much greater frequency in movies such as torture/murder.
Then again, I guess you can't really depict rape in the same manner you causally depict murder in action movies.

I bought Baise Moi when I was a student, and was shocked to see a rape scene with actual penetration. Then they shot some dude up the ass, and I laughed, so it was okay.

Why would it be going too far when it's not reality?
There's a line you can cross where you venture into bad taste.

I don't think there's anything wrong with having rape in a film, but I think there's a point where the level of explicitness does more harm than good. A scene like the one in Irreversible pushes the limits for me. It's incredibly uncomfortable and painful to watch, and you could argue that that has value artistically, but I also feel like a shorter scene could have been just as powerful, so I would say that the scene went too far.

Death Wish II has a two fairly graphic scenes especially by 1982 standards. Charles Bronson's housekeeper early in the film and later on his daughter.

bad taste =/= going too far for me.

The worst part about that sequence is, I forget when but in the middle of the assault, a passerby comes onto the scene and just as he comes into focus he stops and turns around and walks away. What a gut punch.
