The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

Had a dream last night that MetroidXStarFox was real. Everybody was pleasantly surprised with how cool it looked.

There was an NCIS / Hawaii 50 crossover on TV the other day, but they were separate episodes in each series with one over-arching story...

It made me think of this rumor, and also of the way Zelda, DK and Mario have crossed over slightly in the past already. Link to the Past and Link's Awakening had mario portraits in houses, the latter had goombas and 2d platforming sections, a feather that made you jump a la Mario Kart, and Dr Wright from SNES Sim City... DK has appeared in numerous mario games, as they share the same origins.

I think the best way to do crossovers are through those kind of simple nods personally...

I think it would be cool to fly around in Starfox and hear or see something that was later referenced in a Metroid game though... Seeing Samus' ship ahead of you in an asteroid belt as a hidden easter egg, or hearing the crew reference SR-388 or Tallon would be quite the novelty. Maybe it'd be amusing to hear the Galactic Federation talk of the Lylat System too... but actually putting the two series together in one game? Difficult. It'd need some clever design work to make the worlds mesh, Fox McLeod's world is decidedly much more furry: it'd be a very brave decision. I'm fairly sure the rumor was nonsense, but if there's one developer I'd trust it would be Retro. I think it would be pretty neat to see someone make a bunch of separate games in different series that build up to one over-arching saga, that ultimately sees you face off as a team against one mega-villain. It'd essentially be like the separate Marvel properties and the Avengers. Sadly, I think Avengers fever is probably all that inspired this rumor.

A Nintendo universe story wouldn't be that unprecedented... it'd be like Captain N in videogame form, and that's kind of what I really dug about the Adventure mode in Super Smash Bros Brawl... that colliding worlds concept was there, and it was crazy fun to watch! I would totally buy a Captain N videogame.

Does anyone here think one reason Nintendo chose this particular tech compared to others is due to how the Wii situation turned out with third parties? The Wiimote was such a great controller and definitely had games that proved it's worth, but most third party games had really bad implementation of the tech. You had to think about how you developed things on it more so than usual since things weren't so traditional. With the Umote, there is an immediate reaction people have when they see the screen AND it's pretty much effortless to do it. You can certainly come up with more innovative uses outside of the usual map, inventory, etc...but the games won't suffer if third parties don't want to.

I know nintendo does their own thing, but seeing how they have been attempting to court third parties, was this a real factor in why we got this type of input as opposed to some other innovation?

I mentioned months ago that I thought Nintendo was going for synergy across their platforms. Lets face it, Dual Screen gaming became an innovative thing with the DS and now 3DS. Some great ideas and uses came about from both 1st party and 3rd party. All that experience developing for 2 screens would help more 3rd parties jump on board a dual screen home console because its not that "new" of territory that developers are completely unfamiliar with it.

This also helps Ninty's own 1st party studios as they now can cross develop ideas and budgets on what would be the best platform for a specific idea. There just seems to be a lot more cohesiveness and synergy now between both their home console and portable devices.

I think most developers grasped dual screen gaming easier than wiimote motion controls.

Whenever somebody makes HD 3D Ouendan, I think we will all agree the decision made total sense.

I want a Mario Paint game. Exact same shit though: animation and music packages. I want to be able to send animations and music comprised of Mario sounds to my friends. And no, flipnote and swapnote are not it.

Mario Paint. Or Wii Paint. On this thing. ASAP. please.

My source is my ass!
Some infos about the possible Wii U features of Cloudberry Kingdom

it's from a message board, and some talks with a developer.

Features on the WiiU version

Just curious, will there be any features on the wiiu version that aren't in the PC version? Like, the ability to draw your own hero, the sliders on the screen so you can use your fingers to slide them? stuff like that?

[–]TheEzEzzI
We're playing with some different ideas. We're definitely planning on doing all the menus on the slider screen. We really like the draw-your-own-hero idea, or maybe draw-your-own-hat idea. We're also considering a draw-your-own-flag idea for a tentative competitive campaign mode, where your flag will fly above castles that you own. We're open to ideas though!

[–]supergtt

I'd love draw your own, or build your own flag/hat, or whatever, like a build a block feature. does it bounce, does it rise, fall, etc.

[–]TheEzEzzI

A block designer would be cool. Does it move? How far, how fast? What shape is it? I'll definitely put some thought into how to make this work. If we have time to implement it that would be killer.

My hype grows exponentially w/ each passing day. And with wsippel's news about a Wii U tour...I hope they stop by NYC or Jersey. I need to confirm the comfort of the Upads' grippage for myself.

I wonder what the Classic Controller Pro 2.0 will be like. I for one loved the CC Pro, and it provides a great alternative for those who don't want to play with the "gimmicky" controller.
Their loss.

It's gonna look like this:

With maybe some different colored buttons.

Do you guys think there will be any launch titles that primarily use WM+chuck? I for one am hoping for Red Steel 3 to be announced. The sunscreen can just be propped up on a stand for Map and inventory and junk.

Unfortunately, no. With the Wii Upad offering dual analog in addition to touch screen and motion control, there's little reason for developers to go back to the Wii remote and nunchuck, but it ultimately depends on the concept of the game's mechanics. We may get lucky and have FPS games support the Wii remote as an alternative control scheme. I don't see how we could use the Wii Upad in the same way as in Skyward Sword/ Red Steel or Wii Sports. Speaking of Wii Sports, we did see how the Wii remote was still used for it in the concept trailer while the Upad was placed on the ground for golf.

I dunno, I thought they kinda botched tne "worlds and characters colliding” angle in the adventure mode. One thing I love with the Star Fox/Metroid crossover is the thought of the Nintendo characters all being i the same universe albeit separated. With the SSE, the world that the characters inhabited was far too generic to really feel for the crossovers that were happening.

Probably clickable sticks and HOPEFULLY analog triggers. I don't know why they removed them from the CC Pro.

I'm pretty damn hyped for Nintendo's E3. And I'm glad it looks like Sony has a potential megaton E3 announcement with the Gaikai stuff. Shaping up to be one of the best ever if it all goes to plan.

Oh geez I hope your wrong. Such an intuitive control scheme with much untapped potential. Id be perfectly fine just propping up the Upad on the coffee table for map, inventory etc. While playing the game with WM+chuck. Here's hoping for WiiU to be indie developer friendly and see what they can do with some eshop titles maybe.

I'm just not confident that developers will heavily support the Wii remote beyond the necessity for local multiplayer. This is despite how the Wii controls have some obvious advantages (mainly due to its shape) in how they can be used in ways the Wii Upad cannot replicate well or at all.
