Media Create Sales: Week 21, 2012 (May 21 - May 27)

The 3DS' increase is larger than the Vita total weekly sale... what the fuck is going on here.

Wait till you see next week's 3DS increase compared to Vita's entire month :p

Also, no game, Vita in June will be a bit more healthy fortunately. Then it's wait till the end of august for Miku >.>

Great news for Dragon's Dogma. What boosted this popularity? Good advertising? The fact that Japan waited a game like this for a long time?

And great for Fire Emblem too. The original character design is very appealing (I liked it, and apparently almost 400k liked it too?) and the DLC character illustrations were done by quite well-known guest artists. So good for them.

Whether you like the DLC designs or not, it was a smart decision to bring in well known artists working in manga/anime/games. Opened the game up to attracting fans of their particular work.

Having played the game extensively, I can tell you it's fantastic. I've never played an FE game before either.

Positive word of mouth goes a long way, and it helps when the game is genuinely great.

Franchise rebirth?

Impressive DD opening and FE legs. 3D land only a few ten thousand units from being the best selling 3D Mario platformer in Japan, also impressive.

This is also the third week in a row that Vita went up. Undoomed?

Slowly but surely, it creeps back up to the 10k mark. Getting the fireworks ready!

Prediction time:
Will 3DS surpass PS3 before Vita reaches 1 mil LTD?

Without a Vita price drop soon? Yes.

With one, depends on how much of a price drop.

Oh, but there is. When you're on the side that's being pandered to.

I laughed.

~if~ the new artwork or the "pandering" is a big reason why Kakusei sold that much, do you guys want to trade it for the old artwork if it means Kakusei sold way less?

The old artwork is glorious, I admit, but if the new artwork means Kakusei can sell more and more and more than I say, keep it!

I assume you take pictures of anime younglings in lingerie and swimwear?

Wait vol 8, there were 7 previous ones? o_O

What's wrong with this?

Boob window and skintight outfit, mostly. The real complaint is that Micaiah had far more sensible outfits in her own game:

http://fireemblem.wikia.com/wiki/File:Micaiah.jpeg

So it was really just completely unnecessary.

You know, I have been wondering just how much a factor getting B'z to do the main theme for the game has been in Japan. (For those unaware, B'z is a gigtanticly popular musical act in Japan - on the scale of, like, U2 here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B'z ) I imagine it didn't hurt, at least.

Sales do not justify the means, and they can be garnered without resorting to such means.

What sucks is that the DLC designs for the men are just fine, it's the women. :\ Actually, so far it's just Micaiah's that really sucks.

Sure, but it helps. As has been proven.

I think, when it comes down to it, those who like Fire Emblem will buy it irrespective of art, while those who appreciate this particular brand of art will also buy in. Typically for this industry, decisions aren't usually made to please existing fans; rather, they will attempt to test the limits of what fans are willing to accept, in order to widen the audience.

I think the new artwork helped Fire Emblem's initial good sales, but it doesn't explain why it's sustaining those numbers weekly right now... It's not like that style of artwork or guest artists were concepts created by this new FE.

10k yen a piece. ROI must be amazing for Namco.

To be fair, compared to some BD releases here this is actually a steal.

The anime alone they'd charge anywhere from 6k to 8k for, so with the additional game/expansion you get the 10k.

They're playing it smart by packaging the anime with the G4U... things. Even if I have no interest and will never buy one.

I don't think I've seen anyone argue that the new artwork is the sole factor behind FE's resurgence and strong legs. That's never been my analysis of the situation, at least. I attribute it to a multitude of factors. Including the new and diversified art.

That's a slippery slope. How much of what you like are you willing to give up in favor of increased sales, and to what end?

I think most gaffers along with myself, don't care how unpopular or niche a game might be if they enjoy it. I doubt many would trade parts of a game they enjoy in order for that game to have a more mainstream appeal.

I would primarily attribute it to Nintendo treating it and pushing it like a major title with the genre and style also being compatible with the region, but that first half is by far the most important.

Obviously there's a limit. In FE: A's case, though, they aren't even near the threshold of a scenario where they're compromising elements of the game's quality and integrity in order achieve those sales.

It's just the modernization (and multifariousness) of the art that a vocal minority (from what I'm seeing) aren't taking too well to.

Yeah, you won't hear any arguments about that from my side. It's definitely played a major part in FE: A's success.

But there is nothing being given up here. The artwork and designs in the latest FE are far better than the ones in the last few releases.

Tell me about it. I can't be the only one to think that the previous designs were rather lacking in any personality or vibrancy (not that I necessarily disliked them, mind you).

The quality of the artwork is certainly better, but I disagree on the designs.

Not all the designs maybe, but I feel on average its a step up. Not that it was a high bar to begin with, because the last few entries had really bad art. The main characters look pretty solid here, especially the cover art, which is something FE hasn't had for a while. I think stuff like that helps to push the point that this was a serious new entry and not just a cheap remake.

You're just saying that because they weren't overtly sexualized. :p I can understand someone not liking the old artwork, though.

The cover art is quite nice.

Not an asshole.
The GBA FE had tons of charm. The changes remind me of how Pokemon lost a lot of its charm from the early designs.

Are you saying that FE: A has lost the charm of previous FEs? If so, I couldn't possibly disagree more.

But anyways, I'm done derailing the thread. Sorry, folks.

Seeing FE's performance, can we say we will see more of this kind of DLC in upcoming Nintendo games?

I can't imagine DLC for titles like TLoZ or Mario (not to say there couldn't be any), but for games like Pokemon or Mario Kart, for example, definitely.

Zelda games are known for goofy features utilizing a system's specific feature (Stone of Agony, Color Dungeon, Tingle Map). A mini-dungeon DLC might not be too hard to pull.
