What if they launched a redesign in June/July of this year? Several months before Wii U comes out but in time for western releases in the fall/winter.

Me too. Aside from seeing "next-geny" graphics and assurances Pikmin 3 hasn't been screwed up, a better case design is my most anticipated news from E3.

Better does not mean doing bad. Bill Bellchick calls out Tom Brady all the time saying he needs to play better.

Bottom line is it is too early to tell either way right now. When LM2, NSMB2, ONI Training, and Animal Crossing all come out this year along with better western support, and the 3DS is still trending similar in the Western market, then yes I agree Nintendo needs to be worried.

This. The 3DS is already doing fine. We had a double KO hit with SM3DL and MK7 and have a nice slate of varied titles on way, not to mention whatever new ones that will be announced at the show. Making 3DS an overly significant focus of the conference would be over worrying on their part and a huge mistake.

Conf needs to be 30% 3DS at the most and the rest all guns blazing for Wii U. The introduction of a new home console is much more important than a portable system that has already had over a year to establish itself. If the 3DS were nearing Vita territory I'd of course disagree but that's obviously not the case at all.

More likely they'll just put in a better battery and sell the new battery as a replacement on their site.

They've probably given devs the option to burn it to a blu ray writable as well, if I were to guess. Most devs would likely prefer to load it onto USB or SD before they burn a disc, though. BDR is slow and cumbersome compared to a decent SD card.

That was my entire point - for some titles the move from SD to optical might be a non-issue, but for others it might not be trivial at all. Which, combined with the traditional E3 cruch can be a rather unpleasant "bonus" for those devs unfortunate enough to work on more seek-times-demanding titles.

Yeah, it's pretty stange. I'm guessing that whatever copyright protection they've got on the hardware they're using at E3 (which wouldn't have been in the early kits they used last year), precludes developer-signed software running off anything other than the Blu-Ray drive.

Can't let those E3 attendees pirate those demos, duh.

You're absolutely 100% right on this.

I realise people are starved for Wii U info, and want to see as much of it as possible, but Nintendo are total fools if they think they can just leave 3DS to its own devices and have it turn into a megabeast all by itself. It needs high-profile new game announcements, and hype-inducing media for already announced games. I don't doubt it will have less time given to it than last year, but bringing the heavyweights to the 3DS is as important as bringing them to WiiU, IMO.

Absolutely. The situation isn't going to improve itself by way of complacency. The 3DS requires a constant push.

But it's going to be overshadowed by the Wii U no matter how much time they spend on it. That's what the media are coming to see, and that's what's going to dominate coverage from the show. Of course they should show a video of NSMB2, show off a few short clips of LM2, Paper Mario, etc, and a couple of new games, but there's literally zero benefit to spending any significant time on those titles. Just do quick reveals, and then go into more detail in a Nintendo Direct a few weeks later when the Wii U isn't dominating the media's attention.

You see, I'm of the belief that the Wii U will be dominating media coverage even after E3 for quite a while, so I don't see the advantage of skimping on E3 and saving the substance for Nintendo Direct which is not arguably a much smaller event.

Doubtful. Most of the booth discussion will have its own thread (like the signage) along with any major leaks, and the Nintendo Press Conference thread will go up Tuesday morning, and most discussion will stay there/other threads for major announcements for the rest of the week.

I dunno. While a new sleeker 3DS coupled with NSMB2 launch would wreck shit, I'm really not sure Nintendo's in much of a position to launch while 3DS is still making a loss.

Unless the revision launches within a week of the press conferences, the 3DS has spent longer without a revision than the original DS did.

From what I can tell. Amazon North America didn't restock the unit several months ago and only sold through the stock they had. Now this was several months ago.

Apparently there is supposed to be restocked June 4th.....

This is exactly the main reason I think we may see a redesign. Iwata's comments on strong Western support at E3, along with a redesigned system with better battery life hopefully and a second circle pad would aggressively push the system this fall to where Nintendo believes its sales needs to be in euroland and the west.

Yeah, those are always the worst part of a conference. You don't get any real info, and it takes up a lot of time. Honestly their concept video at last E3 is actually what seemed to bring upon the most confusion among the average viewers. It seems like your better off having an exec on stage explaining stuff, and then have trailers and sizzle reels of games.

Two DRC support is already cool strictly for games applications, but imagine the Wii U being the social, multimedia, high-tech hub in your living room: your 50 years old mum cry in front of Desparate Housewives displayed on the TV (through Netflix), your little brother is drawing a gothic cat with spikes, black & red fur, on the first DRC (Mario Paint/Colors!), while you play Superman 64 in the virtual console on the second controller.

Wii U will really be the "project café" as leaked first, like 3 friends ordering different drinks and meal BUT reunited around the same table.

It could be huge if they'll get it right in regard to OS, system features, services, etc.

I invite people to go take a look at the thread by the way, if you have some cool ideas of gamedesign involving the use of 2 DRC
