Yeah, it's pretty stange. I'm guessing that whatever copyright protection they've got on the hardware they're using at E3 (which wouldn't have been in the early kits they used last year), precludes developer-signed software running off anything other than the Blu-Ray drive.

It's a possible explanation yup, the Wii U units brought at E3 2011 were basically dev kit devoid of some development stuff, and put in a show-able case, whereas the ones at E3 2012 will be near final and integrates an optical drive, hence the difference of support used (+ all the others possible reasons described in a previous message).

I think that the storage situation of the Wii U could also explains that, more about that in a future post (before E3 though).

Hey Ideaman, do you have any word from developers on the ergonomics of the updated DRC? Does it have a natural fit?

Random commercial idea.

A kid is playing the Wii U on the couch as his mom calls to him to come to dinner. He walks away with the controller in his hands and sits down at the table with his family. The kid's still paying the game from across the room as the father walks in and asks his son how his day was, but the boy doesn't respond. The sister looks at the mom as if to get her to do something about her brother's bad table manners. She walks over to the tv and turns the channel to the news and sits back down at the table. However, the boy just streams the game to the controller and continues playing. The mom tells her son to put away the games so he can eat his dinner. The boy, still too busy to take his eyes away from the controller's screen, tells his mother to shut up and that he isn't hungry. The father then yells at his son for disrespecting her. The sister calls him a loser and the boy looks up for a moment and says he hates his family.

Talk about expanding the consumer base.
Going after the growing 'dysfunctional family' market.
Great idea!

I love Prime 3, but I did lol at the end credits montage of her thinking about all the 'friends' she had killed. With no real relationships built between them, it seemed more like she was wistfully reminiscing about murdering them rather than thinking of comrades fallen. Seriously, if they'd made her model smile the entire time it would have been hilarious.

I'm not particularly interested in what Samus is thinking, and would certainly prefer she never vocalises her thoughts in-game ever again (Other M), but the first Prime game nailed story telling through Lore much better than the games that followed. Even if you didn't know what Samus was thinking, it made *you* think for her, as a player. You'd think and you'd worry. You'd read Pirate logs about what they were working on, things like the recovery of Ridley, or work on Metroids, infusing them with phazon - and you'd instantly start thinking -- oh shit, something scary is coming up. The amusing entries about space pirates trying to replicate Samus' morphball technology and things like that -- genius! That's what they need to recapture in terms of story telling imo. The X-Parasite stalking Samus in Fusion had a similar effect. Samus does have dialogue in that game, but it really didn't need it.

On a separate note, regarding Lore entries, I'm hoping that Resident Evil 6 will see a return of the Genesis Scanner from Resident Evil Revelations. Revelations seriously needed a log of some sort for the Genesis Scanner with details of enemies, ammo and weapons scanned. I'm guessing they ran out of space so couldn't make it happen but a log of some sort would have put my gaming OCD into overdrive.

Mind you, that's not necessarily a good thing...I'm still left with 99% of enemies scanned in the first Metroid Prime from the Trilogy lol. Think I may have forgotten to repeat a scan of one of the bosses after getting killed!

That was my entire point - for some titles the move from SD to optical might be a non-issue, but for others it might not be trivial at all. Which, combined with the traditional E3 cruch can be a rather unpleasant "bonus" for those devs unfortunate enough to work on more seek-times-demanding titles.

Can't let those E3 attendees pirate those demos, duh.

What is interesting is that all my sources are in rush/crunch time to be able to present something at E3. They are not in a step where their games are so near completion that loosing some time waiting for the special writers, discs, and building a demo to be burned on those discs, is trivial for them,. This necessity imposed by Nintendo themselves must means something (all the explanations brought before).

Looking at that trailer for "Injustice" and seeing that WiiU logo at the end...
I must say it really stands out. Feels next gen.

But is compiling your game code/assets/etc. to be ran off a disk any more time-consuming or troubling than compiling the same game code/assets/etc. to be ran off a flash drive?

Seems like the same deal to me.

I just heard some info from someone who seems trustworthy and I wanted to share the few details I was given. Feel free to believe it or not.

-My source was told by his industry contacts that Blizzard has two unannounced games in the works "that cannot [yet] be discussed" that are scheduled to be released by year's end.

Now, speculation from my source (a fellow Gaffer who wants to protect his sources) based on what he knows about his contacts:
-He is confident that at least one of them is for Wii U, if not both.
-He believes Blizzcon 2012 was cancelled for more reasons than just to focus on SC2 and Diablo 3. If Blizzard had more titles coming out by the end of the year, why would they not show it off at their own show? Unless their hands were tied by heavy-duty NDAs...the kind Nintendo likes to issue...
-He believes Diablo III and StarCraft II are the safest guesses: Diablo III is, of course, officially confirmed to be coming to consoles, but Blizzard won't say which ones (NDA again?).
-His more "crazy-out-there" theory (again, all pieced together from hints dropped by his own sources and what he knows about them) is the MMO Project "Titan," which he believes might have a Free-to-Play model (downloadable from the Wii U eShop-equivalent) with microtransaction support and possibly NFC items at retail.

Thoughts? Comments? Jokes? Ridicule? Feel free. But this is what I was told, take it or leave it. :)

EDIT2: If you're reading this post linked from MyNintendoNews, please read this post instead of the article, which is mostly wrong.

Has Nintendo ever announced a price drop on hardware at E3?
There have been drops around E3, but I doubt they were first announced at their press conference.

Is the Wii U like real small or is Reggie so big it makes it look small?
Both? It's bigger than Wii, but still quite smaller than PS3 or X360, even in their revised forms.
brochiller said:
But still, only a year after release? It still seems too soon to me.
First GBA remodel announced 22 months after first launch. First DS remodel announced 14 months after first launch. We're currently about 15 months from 3DS's first launch.
Exterminieren said:
I dunno. While a new sleeker 3DS coupled with NSMB2 launch would wreck shit, I'm really not sure Nintendo's in much of a position to launch while 3DS is still making a loss.
It wouldn't necessarily eat money. A redesign is a chance to do something cheaper or more efficiently, or introduce multiple tiers of pricing.

Don't know the precise differences, i assume it's easier to just bring your content on SD/HDD than discs. The fact is they waited for those drivers/writers/discs for a certain time, and Nintendo want them to bring what they intent to show through those. Why this obligation ? Is it a copyright/protection thing ? something related to the capability or not (for the moment) for the system to run content from the flash memory or external HDD ? or a cross-explanations thingy, like their demos being of such a size that being ran from the flash is a bit tight, and their external storage approach is not completed yet. Etc, etc.

It's "better", their impressions were rather vague but it seems it's a step up in the right direction.

Thanks. That sounds promising. I've been a little concerned how you make comfy grips that are at a 180 degree angle and with a flat top faceplate.

it's plausible, as an interview of Diablo 3 designer hinted at. But i think Blizzard owned a lot of console dev kits before, without releasing something on those in the end, so we must not jump for joy before a real announcement (and even then, remember Ghost :( ).

Seriously, a futuristic MMO (Titan), with this time, player housing, guild towns, massively multiplayer space combat, and cross-platform community (PC-Wii U). A Star Wars Galaxies with the level of polish from Blizzard.

I hope there is a 3DS redesign at E3 just to shut everyone up about the damn 3DS redesign (also I want it to not have dual sticks so I don't have to buy one, need as much money as possible for Wii U & 3DS games).

If that Blizzard rumour is true Nintendo has solved their Western software support problem in one fell swoop. It's too good to be true though, therefore I don't believe it.

What i wonder is if the padlet is still flat enough (or built with the grips having such a shape to allow this) to be put totally in horizontal on a table or another surface, like any tablet.

I hope it won't be shaky, well, it's pretty sure there will be no problems in that area.

How selfish. And they wouldn't bother with a redesign at all if they thought the sticks wouldn't be a necessary addition.

Blizzard and Nintendo have alot in common, both releases pretty high quality software, both have a healthy loyal fanbase, both like polish their games and take all the time necessary, both are focused in gameplay aspects more than Hollywood like experiences, both take long enough time before launch a sequel of their flagship titles, creating high expectation among gaming comunity. I think something really interesting from a partnership. But I not holding my breath, that rumor sounds too good to be true =(

Seems kind of odd to me that you would create an IRC chatroom for a community about Wii U speculation and then forbid Wii U speculation.

I don't think Nintendo will do a 3DS redesign this year, that would take away some of the Wii-U's thunder. Also, 3DS is selling great while the competition is not, so they don't need a redesign yet to induce more sales. For 3DS they will concentrate on all the cool games coming, and next year will be a redesign.

Places like Amazon being sold out of 3DS and Wii products suggests that they are waiting for new systems.

Since no one replied to my post below I assume it was already discussed. Anyone want to give me a summary?

Since this is possible with the crappy DSi camera and head tracking I expect the Wii U controller will use this for better pseudo 3D. (I hope.)

Yeah I know, wasn't my idea though.

Speculation isn't banned, it's just like leaks and stuff I believe.
But leaks and stuff are probably the biggest thing to speculate over! It's like joining a fanclub for a long-running TV show and saying you can only discuss the first episode. :I

Same. Kinda.

The 3DS is probably my favourite console since the PS2. I absolutely love the thing. If a redesign with the second nub is what it takes to get more people on board and blown down one of the last barriers then so be it.

Does Blizzard have a history of putting their games on consoles?

Since when? It was confirmed that they were "looking into the possibility of it" but never officially confirmed as in development. Unless i missed something

Blizzard games not making their way onto Wii U would be a real missed opportunity. The Wii U controller is perfect for something like D3.

Wasn't there a rumor of World of Warcraft for Wii U a while ago? Something about how the touchscreen now makes it possible on a console.

lol.. not my intent, but why is it dumb?, it hasn't been debunked yet.

If anyone actually thinks that video is legit, they have problems. Why would Square announce something like that in what looks to be a lecture hall. Also listen to the guy speaking, and tell me that it is legit.

The 25th Anniversary logo is also missing the Moogle.
