Rumor: Sega Europe about to close, no more Sega AAA, focusing on digital only

Good riddance. Hopefully now at least someone can buy the rights to Shenmue 3 from the imminent yard sale.

So Sega is most likely focusing on digital games in PSN and XBLA?

Well, if we followed Sega's stated strategy, they would be focusing on all forms of digital, but the rumor insists they're just focusing almost entirely on phones and tablets.

This is why I'm saying there's a bit of banana phone going on here with a retail publishing branch shut down and some related projects.

Sad as hell. In the past, I was always more of a Sega guy than a Nintendo guy, but... it's amazing how poorly this company has been managed while having some of the best developers ever under its wing. Some of the Dreamcast era teams remain some of my most missed.

Someone - hint hint big n - needs to start snatching up IPs.

Re-reading the article again, I really think something is off here. It doesnt go in-line with the stuff SEGA had said before. SEGA Europe closing down is probably the only thing that makes sense.

"Dans la foulée, Sega devrait annoncer également, toujours selon ces sources, ne plus développer des jeux AAA sur consoles, mais se focaliser sur les jeux dematerialisés sur téléphones mobile et tablette notamment."

...I'm having a lot of trouble believing this part. Focusing on tablets and mobile stuff sounds plausible, but not bothering with console stuff? Eh... This bit might perhaps be just related to Sega Europe.

Also: Hope they open themselves up to licensing their games out again at least. That's fine to block stuff off if you're actively localizing, or at least are reasonably healthy so it's a serious possibility, but when you're gutting your international divisions to be staffed by skeleton crews maybe you oughta go back to letting others take a shot.

It's possible. SEGA Europe is mainly known for Total War and Football Manager.

Why on earth would you think Sega owns Platinum Games? Do you really think they'd be working on a Metal Gear game if that were true?

I don't think that, but Sega published all of their games up until Revengeance. If Sega goes down, I would think that they would lose a majority of their funding, unless of course Revengeance is a hit and does great things for them.

May be more he hopes someone else becomes their de facto publisher like Sega was, or SE was with tri-Ace.
Mhmm, basically what I'm getting at.

Have you played Anarchy? It's sublime. Also, if Nagoshis heading down to E3, all I can imagine he's doing for is a Yakuza announcement, which is awesome!

I'm not referring to the games quality, I'm referring to their handling of them as a publisher. The orignal plan to release 3 Silent Hill games in a single month, the LOSS of Silent Hill 2 and 3s source code, the endless game of round robin they're playing with developers with the franchise, and the bizarre publishing craziness that Jim Sterling found out on trying to figure out if Blades of Time had even released.

There's not much better options. The only publisher that I've seen give some kind of attention to stuff that's not AAA is WB, and they'd probably want Platinum to make a Nightwing game.

....On second thought, WB should publish for Platinum.

No, instead they make games for Sega, which then Sega merely dumps into the market or fails to release in some regions altogether, such as Vanquish and what's going on with Max Anarchy.

Basically if the total death and liquidation of Sega is what it takes to get Anarchy Reigns out in the west then so be it.

this doesn't make any sense

How the mighty have fallen. Sega has a revenue of $4.9 billion in 2011. Rovio did make $50 million. Gameloft makes $165 million. I guess Sega makes not more than Rovio on mobile. So, good luck with that shrinking strategy...

Their games:

Don't care about Sonic.

Valkyria Chronicles could actually get a home on iPad/tablets.

Yakuza though can't. Hope they bring Yakuza 5 to the west. Possibly some other publisher will pick it up.

Their relationship has already parted ways no matter how healthy/unhealthy Sega is

Hmm... I could see SEGA Europe not concentrating on developing for consoles, and thus would develop for tablets or mobile devices instead.

That sort of thing happening SEGA Japan IP? Nah. Doesn't fit with what they said a few weeks ago.

Sad news if true, lots of nostalgia around that company. That being said, I haven't been interested in a game released by Sega in a long time so it wouldn't exactly surprise me.

Well, this isn't happening fully to SEGA Japan, Yakuza 5 was just announced. I think this is just something that applies to SEGA Europe, SEGA America doesn't make any physical games either, haven't for a while.

SEGA said they are greatly cutting down on physical games, so it would make sense if only the big AAA games were developed in Japan.

Here's a better translation if anybody cares

Sega Europe to announce its closing?

On the eve of E3 2012, we are able to inform you, according to our credible sources, that Sega Europe will be finally closed in the coming months as well as all the local branches in Europe like Sega France. This is partly a consequence of the ineffectiveness of Sega's strategy over the past several years of developing games by western developers. At the same time, Sega will also announce, according to these sources, they will no longer develop AAA games on consoles, but will focus on digital games for cell phones and notably tablets. Sega's last big title developed by Creative Assembly will be presented at E3 2012 in a few days. Furthermore, remember that Sega has announced they will not be at Gamescom 2012.

I love Yakuza, Bayonetta, Valkyria Chronicles to name just a few of Sega's modern day titles but for every poorly marketed good title that came out there were a bajillion 'Sonic and his Shitty Friends' and woeful licensed games that they put big money behind instead. Sega is legendary with their bad decisions, I'm surprised they lasted this long. Ultimately, Sega needs saving from Sega.

There's a limit to how long you can ride the coattails of past glories and the goodwill of older fans.

Then again - rumours.

Sega, please! WHY!? I had a Genesis instead of an SNES, I bought a Dreamcast launch day - why do I have to watch you die twice!? Why can't you just make a good Sonic game!? Just make Generations 2! Nintendo got away with Galaxy 2! It's a no-risk money maker and why are you such a stupidly run company, favorite company!?

Yeah. Thread title should probably be changed to say "no more Sega Europe-developed AAA games" or something since that's what the article in French seemed to have been implying.

Like you said, they'd likely continue to develop AAA stuff in Japan like Yakuza, Sonic, etc.

All the things I really consider classically SEGA come from their Japanese developers, so I'm actually not really that worried about this rumour.

I wish companies would stop focusing on touch-control games though, it's so limiting to the gameplay.

The AAA note would be universal, not just European, according to the rumor.

Fuck me. This makes a lot more sense, yeah. #gottastayrational.

Wait wait wait. Let's think about this for a second.

Virtua Fighter 5: FS is arriving in a few days. They plan to support the game after release.

Aliens just got a recent preview and a huge update.

Fucking Yakuza got a gigantic overhaul in everything.

A new Sonic racing game is coming out in the last quarter of this year.

And Phantasy Star 2 is coming next year (which will rake in some loadsamone)

There's no way Sega is shutting down with these many games on the way.

They'll probably keep making Sonic games. They're too easy money.

I would think so too, but with Kazerei's translation, this doesn't seem to imply that anymore really.

Id NG3 considered notable? :p

...Okay I haven't checked that one. :lol

Exactly. iizuka-san would murder them if he was no longer allowed to make AAA Sonic games.
