Nintendo Direct Pre-E3 - June 3, 2012 - 6PM ET [Over] - Porn Curtains Ahoy

I had this idea... if this image is too big then I can just link to the image. It's not that funny but it's immediately what I thought of when seeing the social aspect. I'm also horrible at Photoshop... so sorry.

Haha, that's probably closer to the truth. The social networking implementation looks interesting, but not something I have any interest in.

Though, watching this video makes me think how convoluted Nintendo's controller situation is starting to become. The Wii U controller, wiimote & nunchuck and the Pro Controller. Seems a bit overkill to have three different main controller options for a game console. Hopefully it won't confuse the average consumer.

I liked the cheesy skit, I started laughing at Non-Specific Action Figure and the whole call me grandpa bit. Also interested in the game that was in it, am I the only one that thought that they were almost trying to hide it by not showing a lot of it? Seems kind of fishy.

Man, non-specific action figure was great. I missed the live version and just got home. Is there a place that has the video archived? I'd like to watch the entire thing.

Ezalc, I think the game was just a made-up bit of CG meant to show what you'd do in a game if you were stuck. I don't think it's real. :p

I thought they weren't showing a lot of it because it was just some quick footage they cooked up and isn't a real game.

Some people are too serious, especially those calling the hipster segment really bad. It was obviously meant to be super corny and not serious. He was talking to an action figure than an old man he had randomly met online asking to be called grandpa! Why would you take anything other than the features being shown remotely serious?!
But games aren't supposed to be fun. Anyway, that clip was Oscar worthy.

Thanks for the links! I didn't know Nintendo would be hosting the archived version, to be honest. Thought it was live and that would be it.

Zombie Shooter clip is the best Nintendo marketing in years. It's like they're aware of the core audience for onceagain and are having a good time with it.

1) They're going to make tons of money off of accessory sales as always
2) NFC games are going to make parents cry in a corner with uber version of DLC (Tickle me Elmo fads meet games)

This thing wasn't about the games, man. Not sure how many times they need to say that.

In other words, It wasn't a real game.

As an actor, all I could see was a couple of struggling LA actors that got to work that day and seemed to have a pretty good time of it.

As an actor I don't see them having fun with it but making the best with what they had to work with. The paycheck/credit/copy/lunch just made it easier to do.

I really, really hope it's easy to avoid all these social aspects. I just want to play the games :( lol

But I want to believe!

oh my god that was the worst. THE WORST!

I thought it was funny because I saw that exact same line of dialogue happen in some anime, and I thought that it'd be really weird if somebody were to do that in the US.

Nintendo's Pro Bono PR Firm
In online, too soon to tell. In social: by a long mile. Not even mentioning the OS & mobile miiverse integration, the only fact there is a keyboard and video chat packed-in fits perfectly in our twitter/facebook world.

I love how they introduce a lot of the concept work in the presentation too. Alone Together is a great book.

I'm now super excited for WiiU.

Strangely enough I've met a lot of old guys that preferred to be called grandpa by those younger than them.

Man, that Nintendo Power video brought back terrible memories of Shadows of the Empire. I thought I had buried that shit deep down.

I watched the whole thing with my mouth agape.

That hipster playing zombie game was..

okay. I'll buy this console for pikmin3 but I hate everything I just watched.

I'm still blown away by the fact that Tuesday's presser is going to focus mainly on games. Hoping for some good third party surprises and a bangin' launch line up.

Awesome features, awful presentation. The social aspect with packed in keyboard & videochat, full mobile integration, being core to the OS to the point it's the main boot feature, and integrated in games a la Dark Souls... Genius. They got social right. They perfected their Mii breakthrough. All put together it's the smartest design I've seen since itunes/iPhone.

Same idea. The gamers will complain, but the mass market is going to be intetested in that.

That screen is probably more representative of the typical user experience.

The thing is, though... it's weirdly *distinctive* footage. There's tons of ways they could have spent less effort on those zombies than they did.

My brain's convinced it's not a real game. My heart's having difficulty explaining why it's so unique-looking despite that conviction.

Part of me is wondering if, if it's not a real game, it's an utterly *bizarre* nod to the queen's jubilee. It's certainly weirdly British for no fathomable reason.

It could be just some old prototype/tech demo/concept/whatever FPS for Wii or very early Wii U (poly count seems extremely low) they decided to recycle for this particular video, nothing more.

I don't really have the time to look (or even skim) through 30 pages of reactions, but I thought I'd chip in with my two penneth:

I couldn't help but be left convinced that Nintendo haven't got a bloody clue of where they're going with this. The message is muddled, contradictory, and the jettisoning of the 3DS would have me very worried if I owned one - they didn't even put a 3DS in the background of WiiU advert, yet phones featured prominently. A hint of a near-future admission of hand-held defeat, perhaps?

I was on board with the message of the Wii. The execution left a little to be desired though and after a couple of years I was thoroughly bored with it, but it was a step in the right direction for Nintendo. This just looks like two steps back, a half-mile trek sideways and a rollypoly out of the nearest fire escape.

Perhaps they'll prove my gut wrong, and really I'd rather they did, but I wouldn't be willing to put any amount of money on it.

The question is really how naive Nintendo is when it comes to creating all of this - it won't even take an hour after launch and this nice grandpa who gives advice on games actually turns out to be a 60 year old dude who likes to show his junk to young children.

They're basically combining ChatRoulette, Facebook and Forums directly into the OS - And since this comes from a company that has absolutely no experience with online communities, you'll see a hell of a lot of penis. You'll see penis everywhere. Tons of penis. Kids who just wanted to play Mario will see tons of penis. Then they go ask how to solve this or that level and they'll only see penis. So they ask on the forum and they'll see spam that links towards penis.

Oh Nintendo, I hope you're well prepared for the wave of penis that's heading your way.

If penis is everywhere it loses its power to shock!

I'm pretty sure video chat will be limited to friends and if not you'll be able to set that. Maybe comments can be flagged? Who knows it could turn out terribly but then its kind of the fault of people who feel the need to draw penises everywhere. Maybe they'll just ban people with enough flaggings from the service.

This is what everyone wanted anyway. No friendcodes. Messaging. Voice chat. Sharing game content. Seeing who's online and what they're playing. It's not like one step at a time it's all of them at once. This is crazy for Nintendo.

I would swear than the sound effect we hear here there is the same used in the Resident Evil menus.

The portrayal of a hypersensitive hipster covering the ears of his action figure to protect it from hearing him proclaim his new found bestfriendness with Dear Old Grandpapa Octo has me worried about naivety too.

Handheld defeat?! Are you kidding?! The 3DS is finally hitting its stride, and compared to the vita, killing it!

Nobody cares about drawing penises. When games like UNO on Xbox Live are full of actual cock then you have a problem. Nintendo will always be more vulnerable to bad press from these kinds of things, I'm sure they will have a very strict friend system around the social elements.
