I just realized.

Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat characters in the same room. :O
I'm not entirely convinced those are official characters like Bowser, SF, etc. are. more than they are homage designs. NetherRealm might've politely declined or allowed a facsimile.

Looks a bit like Metroid meets Halo. The hexagons everywhere in that one HUD pic along with most of the armor design (hell, the helmet's basically identical to Master Chief's original one) along with Metroid's more sci-fi approach and more fantastic enemies. Kind of surprised (not in a bad way by any means) they took that route for shooters rather than Call of Duty/Battlefield/etc.

They probably went with a sci-fi shooter rather than a modern military because it's easier to keep at a PG level. Blasting alien bugs with laser guns is on the edge, but I can see how they could keep it down to Disney-friendly level. Shooting real people with real guns immediately jumps into at least PG-13 levels of violence.

I can only imagine the number of cameos and trivia opportunities this movie is going to create. With a reference like this, it's clear some powerful videogame nerds were working behind the scenes.

I remember when I used to pronounce Zangief the way they do in this movie.

Then I actually heard the name pronounced the correct way.

The 8-Bit Wreck-It Ralph game better be playable in some way

It was last year in fact at D23.

Also I hope this does well, I know Tangled did well but I don't it to be another Disney film where good overcomes evil, somes eviil has to overcome good.

I don't know why but the "generic green alien" reminds a lot of Medusa from NES Kid Icuras. And if not that then it feels like its from somewhere else, but I can't put my finger on it.

Anyhow this movie is weird for a disney movie in that I don't know how it will end. I'm having a hard time finding a cop-out way to have him overcome diversity and turn good without messing up the video games.

It's almost certainly a Beholder from Dungeons and Dragons.

Because they're simple references. There's nothing deeper to it. It is not really any different from this twenty years ago

Except now it's a Disney movie and has John C. Reily in it.

Writing video game humor is hard. You can't make it too esoteric, but making it too broad dilutes the point. The easiest route to go is just pandering. You know who no one ever sees anymore? Q-Bert! So let's represent him as abandoned and in need of food. That's easy to do and people will get it. Why is Zangief in a villain meeting? Because he has a Russian accent. Simple.

I'll see it, and will be happy to admit I'm wrong, but at every junction I have seen this movie since it was rebooted, I have been pretty unimpressed. Like I said, writing video game humor is hard. The easiest path doesn't impress me.

I was hoping for Who Framed Roger Rabbit for video games. That movie was more than drawings representing Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny in the same scene. It was Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny, the characters, in the same scene.

You know, didn't Roger Rabbit and Toy Story do the exact same thing, just with animation and toys respectfully?

I remember gags in these movies with Betty Boop being a waitress because she was still in black and white and Mr. Potato Head unable to keep his pieces together and wanting Andy to get a Mrs. Potato Head. Just because Q*Bert is homeless on the streets because no one's played Q*Bert in years doesn't mean if this will or won't be a good movie.

Really, like Roger Rabbit and Toy Story, the focus isn't on the cameos from the respective medium they are focused on, it's about Roger Rabbit & Eddie Valiant and Woody & Buzz. This movie will succeed or fail, not on the video game references, but on if people actually care about Wreck-It Ralph.

I think that's just to signify that he's a boss. I seriously doubt that they'd use that version of Medusa when the new KI's version of Medusa looks very different. As for the other enemies, I do think some are just generic monsters like the yellow robot and the zombie, though the night elf might be a specific warcraft character.

Edit: Was Saw-Hand a villain? Keep in mind that all of these characters are supposed to be "bad guys".

And then you realize because of licensing issues this movie will ironically not have a game based on it.

I dunno, maybe they can make a game multiplatform and have exclusive characters/content for the different consoles. If we can get games like Cross Edge out here in the US, it can't be too difficult for a big company like BVG/Disney to get a couple cameos for a game adaptation.

Yeah, in the game he's your protagonist. Actually, you can construct your own cyborg using different parts, and the 'saw hand' is one of the options they give you.

It might not actually supposed to be him, but it sure does look like him.

none of them are generic me thinks, can't wait for confirmation.

Yeah, I have the feeling they are all references. I'm excited for this based on finding cameos alone. I do hope the story stacks up, but it should be fun either way.
