(Reuters) - Nintendo Co will cut its employees' summer bonuses by about 20 percent this year as a result of weak business performance, Japanese business daily Nikkei reported.

The video game giant reported its first annual operating loss of 37.3 billion yen ($469.65 million) in April on shrinking sales of its Wii gaming console and weak demand for its new 3DS handheld device.

The company has reduced executive compensations from last year, the newspaper said.

searched nintendo and summer and got nothing.

Sad, but they seem to be betting almost entirely on Mario to carry them through (and Brain Training and Wii Fit U) to carry them through until the second wave of Wii U titles. Let's hope Mario doesn't suffer franchise fatigue!

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
My opinion is its not gonna get easier with the Wii U. Very interested in seeing what the next few years holds for Nintendo.

Wii U has a GPGPU now, nothing to worry about.

I get a bonus at the end of the year if I'm lucky. How does Japan work when it comes to salary and bonuses?

I know it's not nearly as dire, but hearing of all these executive paycuts and slashed bonuses and stuff reminds me of RIM.

The Wii U isn't going to catch fire like the Wii did, I think. The 3DS is weak outside Japan. The PS4 and XB3 is not far behind. Tough, unpredictable times ahead for Nintendo.

Nintendo has honor, that's a rare trait these days. As for cash, I think they have enough for three generations of failures. They don't fear the shareholders as much as they fear Yamauchi, oh wait Yamauchi owns more shares than anybody else lol.

The Wii just crashed immediately and Nintendo felt that backlash quickly. I wonder if this weak hardware strategy will work when coupled with some new controller input. The Wii U just doesn't look like it's a viable long term console at all. I don't see how Iwata would feel comfortable with sudden crashes at the end of a five year cycle like this one.

This is the first time I've really felt like Nintendo doesn't know where they are going.
How much cash do you they still have in reserve?
Probably enough to outlast Sony or GAF.

There's been so many Mario games, I'm sure we're just indifferent to anything new in the series.

"Oh hey.... another Mario game."

The 3DS is picking up steam and I'm not going to bet against the Wii U. Let's wait until that releases before everyone starts freaking out.

Sounds like a great place to work, seriously.

The thing is the 3DS isn't picking up steam in the West.

i don't think they have many places left to go. if the wii u actually acts as a third console, and not in the way gamecube acted as a third console, they should be able to hang with the other guys for a while.

if not, they'll be lucky to hit 50m consoles next gen, and 80m handhelds. they're already going to massively miss 3ds shipments.

the other wildcard is sony. they need to do something soon if they want to keep the vita around longer than a year or two. if they're forced to drop out then i think nintendo's going to stop making handhelds and consoles and just make one device that does both. they're kinda leaning that way with this gen anyway.

Indeed, and they've been selling decently still.

However:
SM3DL
Mario Party 9
Fortune Street
Mario Kart
Sonic & Mario @ the London Olympics
Mario Tennis
Paper Mario
Luigi's Mansion
NSMB2
NSMBU

Will all be releasing within 18 months of each other. Although they play differently, and are all (except NSMB) different genres, so there's hope, I guess?

Announce that new 3DS Nintendo. You know you want to. C'mon Nikkei, throw us another bone on that.

Also, panic mode Nintendo is best Nintendo.

Yep

Screw Mario games, I just want a 3DS XL. Not asking for dual nubs, but I'll gladly pay for them and a larger battery. Redesigns are the real deal with Nintendo handhelds.
Also, panic mode Nintendo is best Nintendo.
Panic mode Nintendo is weaksauce on home consoles. Third parties(basically Ubisoft lol) are outdoing them on the Wii U right now. This is without Japanese third party announcements.
Be nice if panic-mode Nintendo was also "listens to it's fans" Nintendo.
Doesn't matter anymore. Nintendo has beaten many a fan into submission. I know since I never asked for much from the start and I'm still one of the few disappointed after their showing. Some people are just buying blindly because they know 3D Mario, Metroid and Zelda will be there.

If the April NPD is correct, they've already sold 4.5 million units in NA? What have they sold globally?

Sorry, but I can't see that as being bad entering it's second year.

Nintendo has a total cash amount of $12.06 billion with no direct debt.

The issue relates more to this:

And that's after an unprecedented pricecut. Legit cause for concern for them.

Well, NCL has been able to maintain a steady flow of major software since Q4 of last year. NOA and NOE haven't.

The troubling thing is that, while KH3D and (especially) NSMB2 will help a lot, it's not quite clear looking at the post-E3 release list just what will drive hardware sales between August 19 and November.

And it bears repeating that the "panic mode Nintendo" meme is mostly nonsense. Nintendo had its software ducks in a row, at least for the Japanese market, before 3DS even launched; if they didn't, a price cut would only have helped so much.

well it's basically on track to sell as well as the ps3 or n64 did- around 20m. that's not bad, but it is when compared to the gba and ds, which both sold over 35m each.

home.

How can they do badly if 3ds sell a ton and all their games is usually multimillion seller. I know it's nowhere near the time when wii is at its peak, but I would have thought theyre in a much better condition financially?

(Spent too much moneyhatting monhun?)

So, if I'm looking at that right, their stock situation is going back to how it was during the Gamecube days?

Yes.

I would say that either the 3DS needs to pick up significantly in the West or the Wii U needs to really take off for the stock to go up a notable amount from where it is now.

The Wii just sold so outlandishly well that I doubt they can duplicate the success, let alone have their stocks rise so high once again.

I don't know how much you know about Nintendo (I'm an expert) but honor is not a huge part of it.

I'm not really concerned for them, but I am totally down for the combined portable/console. I've thought this for a while, and their direction (similar inputs, all digital, eShop unification, connectivity, decreasing difference in power between handheld and console, etc.) really makes me think this is something in the works.

Nintendo has stated that people resent buying hardware and only do so to play their games. This is certainly true for me. I don't geek out when I buy a Blu Ray or DVD player. I just do it to enjoy the media that I can play on them.

If I only had to buy one clamshell portable that had a TV out and could sync to wireless controllers, that'd be great. One less hardware to buy each generation AND every single Nintendo team could develop for a single platform. It'd make Nintendo more creative also. You wouldn't need two separate NSMB games to drive sales for two platforms. The team could create one NSMB game to drive sales and then maybe try something completely different.

The future is hybrid.

Stock is more like how much faith investors have in Nintendo. If the stocks are low, investors don't think too highly of the company.

Granted, these are investors we're talking about, but that's how they are.

It's also still their fault to as well. The issue is still games or the lack of them of all types. They should have known they'd have no significant western support. Not because their games don't sell but because they just don't care about hand helds. What carried all of their hand helds were Japanese games and they are not being released outside of Japan fast enough. Even at E3 this was not addressed and the one bone we got Fire Emblem was only because Reggie slipped up.

Don't think things are going to get better for them. Highly doubt Wii U has any chance of success on the same level as Wii. They can hope for Gamecube level sales at best. Motion controls are now done by everyone and touch screen controls are just a gimmick done to try and replicate their success with Wii. They created the thing and haven't even shown a compelling reason to even have a touch screen controller.

http://www.gamesradar.com/nintendo-doomed-not-likely-just-take-look-how-much-money-its-got-bank/

“Buried in reams of financial data is the revelation that Nintendo have 812.8 billion Yen (£6.7/$10.5 billion) in the bank – enough for it to take a 20 billion Yen loss (£163/$257 million) every year until 2052. Then there’s almost 469 billion Yen (£3.8/$6.0 billion) held in premises, equipment and investments. When that runs out – we’re in the year 2075 by this point – they’ve got some of the most valuable intellectual property in gaming to sell off before the company goes out of business.”
