Following is analysis from The NPD Group’s video game industry analyst, Anita Frazier:

Overall

“These sales figures represent new physical retail sales of hardware, software and accessories which account for roughly 50-60% of the total consumer spend on games. When you consider our preliminary estimate for other physical format sales such as used and rentals at $155MM, and our estimate for digital format sales including full game and add-on content downloads including microtransactions, subscriptions, mobile apps and the consumer spend on social network games at $420MM, we would estimate the total consumer spend in May to be $1.17B. Our final assessment of the consumer spend on these areas outside of new physical retail sales will be reported in September in our Q2 Games Market Dynamics: U.S. report.”

Hardware

“All hardware platforms, save the 3DS, saw a decline in unit sales versus last year. The Nintendo DS, however, did realize a 35% lift over April 2012, catalyzed by the May 20th price reduction on the DSi and DSi XL. Even with the price drop on the DS platform, 3DS sales realized an increase of 17% over last May.”

New Physical Software

“PC Games sales realized a year over year increase of 230% realizing $80MM in sales, which softened the decline in software sales overall.”

“Diablo III is the top selling title for May, the first time since July 2010 that a PC-only game accomplished this feat. Since the game launched day and date through digital distribution as well, full sales of the title are some multiple of what is reflected in the retail sales. Starcraft II was the title that topped the best-seller list in July 2010, a testament to the power of the Blizzard brand in PC gaming.”

“To dig deeper into the new physical retail software performance this month, new launches generated 31% more dollars this May than they did last May, largely due to the success of Diablo III. This May, new SKU launches across console, portable and pc game software generated 188% more unit sales per SKU than they did last May. So while there were fewer new item introductions this May, they collectively generated more unit and dollar sales.”

“YTD 2012, there have been 27% fewer new software title introductions into retail which we believe is a big part of the softness we’re seeing in May sales. A title obviously continues to see sales beyond its launch month, so there is a longer term impact from a narrower array of available new content. That said, we saw some exciting content at E3 that will come to market in the latter part of the year, and when great content comes to market, gamers are still showing up at the stores to buy it.”

Accessories

“The Accessory category continues to perform well due to increased video game card sales, up 74% from last May, as well as the continued success of Skylanders.”

Coming off an amazing and busy show at E3 last week, we are keeping this month’s NPD email brief. Xbox 360 sold more units in May in the U.S. than any other console or handheld game device, maintaining its position as the best-selling console in the U.S. for the past 17 months.

May 2012 U.S. NPD highlights:
· Xbox 360 sold 160,000 units in May, representing a 45 percent share of current-generation console sales in the U.S. This marks the 15th consecutive month that Xbox 360 has held more than a 40 percent share of current-generation console sales in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, May 2012)

· Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in May (hardware, software and accessories) reached $209 million, the most for any console in the U.S. and more than the spend on the other two current-generation consoles combined. (Source: NPD Group, May 2012)

· During the month of May, Xbox 360 held six of the top 10 U.S. console game titles including: “Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier,” “Max Payne 3,” Prototype 2,” “Sniper Elite V2,” “NBA 2K12” and “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.” Xbox 360 also garnered more software sales than the other two current-generation consoles combined. Last week at E3, Xbox detailed its mission to make the entertainment people love even more amazing. In addition to announcing its greatest lineup of games in history, Xbox introduced the next wave of leading entertainment partners coming to the platform and an entirely new experience with Xbox SmartGlass, enabling consumers to experience their favorite entertainment across the devices they love.

Sony PR said:
According to the May NPD report, exclusive PlayStation 3 titles again posted strong results with MLB12: The Show and Starhawk. PlayStation also continues to experience accelerated digital sales growth for the PS3 and PS Vita platforms. As demonstrated at E3 last week, our commitment to gamers is stronger than ever with upcoming 2013 PS3 exclusive titles, including Beyond: Two Souls, God of War: Ascension and The Last of Us, as well as PS Vita titles PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Assassin's Creed III: Liberation which will continue PlayStation's momentum into the new year.

Nintendo PR said:
In May, Nintendo sold more than 285,000 units of portable and console hardware. At the E3 Expo in Los Angeles last week, Nintendo revealed a massive slate of first- and third-party games on the way for Nintendo 3DS and the upcoming Wii U console. Further details about Nintendo's E3 announcements can be found here: http://e3.nintendo.com. We're looking forward to a strong second half of 2012..

MS need to get some games out ASAP. Hopefully Halo 4 will bump up the numbers later in the year but people will be begging for Next-Gen at this rate.

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Prototpye 2 sold something like 236k last month, right? Is it safe to assume that it and everything under it is under that number?

Yikes, if the 360 is that low I wonder what Wii and PS3 numbers are. Double digits I suppose.

will learn eventually
Gaming is dead

Let's wrap if up folks

Except for PC lol

MS, Sony and Nintendo need to get their shit together. NPD tracks only physical increase in sales. Just imagine how much bigger the PC market is in reality with Steam etc...

I wonder why it constantly has to be explained to people that the hardware isn't selling very well. If the 360 is that bad, the other 2 are tanking.

Seems like a terrible month all around. 160k for the 360 and that's 45% of the console market? Jeebus. These consoles really need price cuts.

I really hope Vita hardware sales leak out.

3DS is also <160K despite Midnight Purple launch.

I suppose this means Ghost Recon: Future Soldier outsold Max Payne 3 (at least on X360)?
(Basing that on the order of titles in Microsoft's PR.)

There will be price drops across the board imo, but summertime is simply not the right time to do this. I expect this happening in August.

Dragon's Dogma didn't keep its lofty 5million unit sales goal, did it?

Console numbers tell us we're still in an economic downturn than anything else. Every other living expense has shot through the roof (between the price creep-up and the shrink rays I'd say food bills are 20-30% higher over last year with most items), which in turn hits the poor man's hobby pretty hard.
