Rumor: Leaked document detailing MS future plans for the Xbox line. 56 pages long.

So basically by 2015:

1) We're going to have always connected, always on devices (tablet, phone, Xbox, glasses, computer, etc.).

2) The content (movies, music, games, etc.) will likewise be shared among our devices. They're going to talk to each other over the internet, cell service, and Wi-Fi to stay in sync.

3) We'll all be wearing funny glasses that are basically cell phones in our face (but since all our devices are connected, I guess you could consider it any device). The glasses will also interpret our surroundings and environment and provide feedback.

Sounds reasonable. It's the exact same scenario that Google and Apple are striving to deliver.

It seems to be from 2010. Did they have that code name back then?

Kotaku first made the codename "Durango" public on Feb. 15. But some guy wrote last Nov. on pastebin some xbox 3 and PS4 specs and already got "Durango" (and "Orbis") right.

But we have no idea how long MS is running with that name internally.

Well, I suppose MS could very well want this taken down official or not.

What others? Nintendo's console is ready, and it is too late imo for Sony to change the configuration of its upcoming system...

I am sure many in the electronic entertainment industry pay attention to other companies even if it isn't gaming. They all have a crossover point.

Hahaha! So it WAS real! Digital Foundry owned.

OTOH, the doc is already 2 years old so things have changed a lot. At least we now know MS' future plans.

Also, since the doc is from 2010, the Durango codename didn't probably exist then, we heard the codename for the first time in Nov 2011.

I got to read the pdf before it was apparently pulled but if true, we are in for something awesome. Especially the stuff about the glasses. I don't have the technical understanding as many of you obviously have but as a gamer and a consumer, I like what I read, this could be huge.

If they stick to it and doesn`t change their plan and you are only interested in gaming their new machine will we a weakling. 4-6x the 360 after 8 years is not good and the overall system cost of only $225 and the low wattage shows that there won`t be a good gpu powering that machine.

I asked bgassassin if the 1-1.5 Teraflops GPU rumor that's been going around could have been based on info in this doc, since the 4-6x improvement on games mentioned in this doc matches up perfectly with that rumor. But he thought that 1-1.5 TF GPU rumor was from some newer leak. So it doesn't sound like they've upgraded the spec much since this doc was created. I guess if they are planning to go into cloud computing/gaming, the GPU is less important compared to the CPU and memory ?

Im still leaning towards it being a student/intern project that somehow got circulated..MS wants it down because real or not it is a representation of them internally that they would not want to become circulated as "true".

even if its fake the strategy is,i think, the one that ms will follow....

just see smartglass and the general media-box/casual-kinect push that ms does.

I'm convinced its real. Its probably not 100% accurate as things may have changed over the last few years, but it gives a good insight into where they are going. One thing nukezilla reported is that it'll be hardware backwards compatibility that will be removed after 3 years or so (so around 2016). That sounds kinda shitty-- I don't want my 360/XBLA content that I spent so much money on to go away if my box breaks down after they remove the 360 chips and I have to buy a new Xbox without the backwards compatibility. That being said, I'm sure even the CPU architecture is subject to change as a lot of more recent rumours have suggested that they are in fact going with PPC.

The file path contained a name of an an actual MS employee. It's kind of hard to believe some prankster would get something like that right. I think it's real, but it's fairly old and more like a rough draft of a new product pitch, than some concrete plan.
So you have to take it with a grain of salt.

There's been so many code names thrown around over the last year-- Project Ten (by Paul Thurrott), Loop (MSNerd/Thurrott), Yukon (Nukezilla), and Durango. I wonder if its just different teams looking at diferent aspects of the next system, or perhaps multiple projects looking at different types of Xbox experiences (Smart Glass, Fortaleza, the rumoured Xbox TV, etc).

The file path contained a name of an an actual MS employee.

It didn't contain the full name of an MS employee. It contained "nkacharoo" or whatever. Which we then decided must be so and so at Microsoft (full name Naveen Kacharoo, or Naren Kacharoo).

Now, whats that mean? Hard to say. The last name Kacharoo seems to be indian and maybe common? Nonetheless, it's at least a little suspiscious, but it didnt contain the "full name of an actual MS employee"

Crytek just said a few days ago that they are "way beyond next-gen consoles already" and implied a negativ outlook for the next gen consoles:

"We were one of the first studios in the world to get access to all of the next-generation consoles. Obviously we can't talk about what they are but we know what next-gen entails. I think people... I'm not going to judge it because it'll get me in trouble, but next-gen is actually not a clear picture right now."

Makes sense now.

Whats so negative about that? He said its not a clear picture, which means that things are probably changing. The rumors say that the Xbox is getting more power, so who knows?

There's reading between the lines and then there's just making shit up for clicks.

He says nothing about the potential power of next-gen consoles.

I wouldn't be surprised if they stuck to the 6 x 360 deal. The last time epic got them to pump up the specs, it cost MS over a billion dollars I think.

While I'm sure Epic and the like's input is important, I get the feeling shareholders are going to push Microsoft to make something more profitable from the get go.

In which case, from what we've seen PS4 is gonna be much more powerful than x720. However, will that justify the possible 100 euro higher price? To be honest I would say yes it would justify it. I mean this gen ps3 isn't that much more powerful than x360 and has been the best selling console almost every year since the the revision and it's still more expensive than x360.

Also 2014 is way too late for the smartglasses. It looks like MS will once again come late to the party on that one.

It won't really matter if the PS4 is more powerful. If by the time it releases, MS and Nintendo (if Wii U can receive ports) have a decently sized base, developers will make games for the common denominator of the three.

Though the PS4 versions would probably look best.

If its real, its incredibly disappointing. It seems underpowered like crazy. Im not liking this one bit. This might be the first time ever i make playstation my main gaming console.

To be honest I don't think so. If these rumours are true then the next gen will be very weird. You'll have Wii U which is gonna be as strong as current gen (i.e. even worse situation than what Wii had), X720 which is gonna be 4-6 times better and PS4 which seems to be 8-10 times better than the current gen. Those are huge differences, so simply creating a game for the lowest common denominator won't work here.

With regards to my previous comment I wasn't really thinking about the games being developed but whether Sony could afford to release stronger and pricier console. If the rumours and technology trends are to be believed Sony will release in the first half of 2014 with an uber powerful machine or for holidays 2013 with a console marginally more powerful than this x720 rumour. In that case I would say waiting for 2014 would be doable from Sony's point of view.

Also if this x720 rumour is true, then the console's life cycle won't be more than 5 years. Tablets and phones would catch up easily if the cycle would 7-8 years like now.

:)

I don't recall, but I take that to mean you said "I know".

We've been discussing it on B3D for a little while now.

I was the one that called it weird.

The gap between Wii U and Xbox 3/PS4 will be smaller than the gap between PS360 and current high-end PCs.

Several people in the know on B3D have used exactly that word, "weird" to describe Durango.

If all of those assumptions are true, I don't see how Wii-U will be the lowest common denominator. It will be like this generation. For the most part, Wii-U will have a completely different game library and not borrow much from PS4/Durango.

Regarding those two, I think the most extreme example is if PS4 somehow ended up with twice the GPU power of Durango. But even in that case, it's easily close enough to share the same game development pipeline. X2 actually isn't a very large difference when it comes to being able to do something or not. If that were the case, I think the games would look similar, maybe a larger gap than this generation between PS3 and X360, but they would still roughly look "on par".

And 2x power differential is probably unlikely. The actual difference might only be 1.5x, like if Durango was 1.2TF and PS4 has 1.8TF.

Depends on the Wii U's feature set I think. If it has the right features (support DX11 level stuff, etc) it will probably share a lot of the library.

From what I've read, that would have been possible even with the Wii if the Wii had the right features. Unfortunately, it didn't.

Jep, i would do the same presumed Sony delivers. I bought the first Xbox and the 360 at launch but i would pass on that weakling. I also despise their "always on" approach.

It would be weird to expect Microsoft to settle for a GPU below Sony's projected one. Their architecture -that of Microsoft machines- has always been GPU centric...

I really don´t want to be the person in charge of the decision on the final PS4/Xbox3 specs. It has to be really tough to satisfy all stakeholders (different types of consumers, shareholders, press etc.), especially because after the final decision you are tied to that hardware for nearly a decade.

From a gamer´s perspective I would like to see more powerful specs than the rumored ones..

Wow at all these sites/people thinking this is true cause Microsoft pulled it.

It's pretty tortuous logic to assume MS bringing in lawyers for takedowns is because it is fake and they somehow want to 'protect their reputation' by taking an action that implictly confirms the leaks accuracy.

Besides the points already mentioned, a PC can do a lot more than a home console will ever be able to do, and can do it openly without being constrained within a mandatory framework.
What?

Consumers don't care about that.

You can still have a home PC (and play the game on it via streaming), you just don't have to deal with hardware compatibility, drivers, etc which is huge for the consumer and the devs.

And anyone complaining about "latency" has never used Gaikai or OnLive. And that's streaming a ton further than from your living room.

I complained about latency because - guess what? - I have used onlive.
I also complained about image quality. Because streaming video has both a worse resolution and a higher latency than playing a game directly.

As for 'not having to stream' PC games, I have no idea what you are talking about. You're streaming games to your Xbox from a remote server, and from there to yuor PC - how does that equal not having to stream a PC game, or not being any different in terms of hops to onlive?

Interesting, seems like this is being reported everywhere around the web and now lawyers have taken it down.

I wonder if/how much their price forecasts have changed since 2010. They predicted a price of $249 for wii u and $299 for xbox 720.
